Avion isn't airplane in Commons

Some friend of commons has uploaded a lot of airplanes fotos to Category:Avion, probably because "Avion" in Spanish means "Airplane". The original category was for a French region (was it?) and the "aviones" must be moved to "Airplane" or subcategories. Who can do it?. --Createaccount 15:34, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

Usually you have to ask at COM:BWR or use one of the methods listed at Commons:Batch editing. But I am going to take care of them. -- Rillke(q?) 18:16, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
I moved everything that was uncategorized to Category:Unidentified aircraft. I suggest the uploader now inspects the remaining uploades whether to remove Category:Avion (if it already in in a sub-category of Category:Aircraft). -- Rillke(q?) 18:50, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
There are more than 500 images and in the third page, there are 6 or 10 images of the French town called "Avion". --Createaccount 19:17, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
VisualFileChange allows sorting by categorization date and filtering by uploader. -- Rillke(q?) 21:35, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
People should not upload more files than they can properly maintain. -- Rillke(q?) 21:35, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

I posted the case to Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard#Category:Avion_isn.27t_for_airplanes in order to stop the robot. --Createaccount 07:40, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

Worth considering disambiguating the category, 'Avion' means aircraft in a number of languages including French. If there are hundreds of images lining up for the category when there are only a dozen geographical images, well, the aircraft have it I would think. I don't know how geographic regions are disambiguated on commons, unless someone knows, I guess just go with Avion, France or something like that. Penyulap 08:25, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
I don't care a lot for categories since they've lots of disadvantages and a term in file descriptions in one category does not work and will possibly never work. Just observe how disambiguation is done and go ahead. I just like to mention that most of the hundreds of images were placed by a bot there. -- Rillke(q?) 11:16, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

I posted the case to Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard#Category:Avion_isn.27t_for_airplanes in order to stop the robot. Please, continue the discussion there.--Createaccount 22:46, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

Bot uploaders don't worry too much about category names and even less of their descriptions and notes. Only when there is no category existing that has the same name as the Flickr keyword, they look closer. Anyway, on 90 % of the files I checked, the avion/aircraft cat was an overcat. So I cleaned it out and deleted it. Note that this happens with many categories, such as Arbre, Bergen, Grave and some others that I couldn't find back. --Foroa (talk) 16:17, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

Uploading photos - authorship

i want to insert a photo of an actor on a page I have created for him (he is my friend and quite unable to do so himself!). I have found a photo of him by another friend - a pro photographer. This one has said OK to my using the picture. I had already created a "ficheiro" with the picture. However, in this meantime, the photo disappeared. How should I proceed? reinsert the photo in another "ficheiro" and ask for the email from the photographer? Ask for his email with the photo attached? Do both things simultaneously? -- 09:39, 1 July 2013‎ User:Elidia Novaes

The established procedure is to go through Commons:OTRS. -- AnonMoos (talk) 17:25, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

Images that are not your own

Articles on wikipedia with images from CDs, films, comics etc always have the relevant copyrighted images, but at a very low resolution. The disclaimer noted (in this case for an image from a comic):

This image is from a comic strip, webcomic or from the cover or interior of a comic book. The copyright for this image is most likely owned by either the publisher of the comic or the writer(s) and/or artist(s) which produced the comic in question. It is believed that

the use of low-resolution images of the cover of a comic book to illustrate: the issue of the comic book in question; the periodical comic book series of which this issue is a part; or the copyrighted comic book character(s) or group(s) on the cover of the issue in question; or the use of low-resolution images of a single panel from a comic strip or an interior page of a comic book to illustrate: the scene or storyline depicted, or the copyrighted character(s) or group(s) depicted on the excerpted panel in question; where no free alternative exists or can be created, on the English-language Wikipedia, hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation,

qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Any other uses of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, may be copyright infringement. See Wikipedia:Non-free content and Wikipedia:WikiProject Comics/copyright for more information.

Can I upload low resolution images of copyrighted things such as things from comics etc then, ignoring the wikimedia rule about not uploading things that are not my own work? Thanks for your time, --Grammarbishop8 (talk) 17:09, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

You can upload some of those types of images for some purposes on English Wikipedia (though there are a lot of rules you need to pay attention to), but NOT here on Wikimedia Commons... AnonMoos (talk) 17:28, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

Derivative files

I have made a cropped and cleaned version of a Commons file (photo). What info do I supply the Upload Wizard with? Are author, source, description the same? Do I just refer to the earlier file? Thank you for your help. Vzeebjtf (talk) 23:20, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

You can use all of the material from the original and use Template:Derived from. If you spent a lot of time and effort you could also add your name as a second author. "Enhanced by Vzeebjtf" or something similar.--Canoe1967 (talk) 00:14, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

Upload from Flickr seems to not work in Firefox

I can't seem to get the 'Share images from Flickr' thing working in Firefox. It works fine in Chrome but in Firefox 22 for OS X, it's not working for me. I can click and paste a URL in, but when I hit the 'Get from Flickr' button, it just doesn't do anything. —Tom Morris (talk) 12:30, 3 July 2013 (UTC)

Can you please open the Web-Console in Firefox (it is the second option under developer tools for me), then enter the Flickr-URL and press "Get from Flickr". Then some XHRs to the Flickr-API should be listed in the Web-Console. If they fail, it would be interesting to know why (the error message or error number). Thanks in advance. P.S. are you using https or http for Commons? -- Rillke(q?) 08:45, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

So, I've tried uploading something other than pic onto Commons, but it just refused. How can I get a list of formats that Commons holds?Super Wang (talk) 11:54, 7 July 2013 (UTC)

Donating Pictures of Psilocybe and Panaeolus Mushrooms

I have pictures of the discovery of Panaeolus Tropicalis, the wild form, discovered in Martin And St.Lucie County Florida. I am the one who gave the spores to 3 vendors for free to sell on the web. I am a researcher and do not sell any spores. I also discovered and isolated the Treasure Coast Cubensis and a Mutated Mushroom which was created by lab accident called the B+ and can prove it. I have many, many picture I have taken and have copies on negatives and CD ROM. Would like to donate picture of wild form of Tropicalis as the picture of your cultivated version came from spores I isolated from the wild. They were either purchased from F.M. Farms or Hawkseye.com originally for him to get them. Ask the person who provided the cultivated version photo. Do you wish to have these pictures and all rights to them? You are welcome as well as the True Story of the lab accident resulting in creation of B+ which is the best selling Psilocybe Mushroom on the internet and in the world........Mark L. Ramsey aka Mr.G

Please go to Hawkseye.com and look at what he says about the origin of the B+. I gave spores for 5 different active mushrooms free, to 3 vendors with the only obligation being they credit the isolator an alias of "Mr.G". Only one lived up to the agreement. The rest bad mouthed me while making a fortune off my isolations, and lot's have tried to claim slanderous things about me etc. I can prove all I say and have dated pictures and negatives as well as original spore prints. Would you like to have some of these photo's? Please tell me where to upload for review if you wish. The mycology world is made up of some of the the most arrogant, egotistical, jealous people I have ever met in my life. The bad ones give the whole field a bad reputation! I don't understand why they act in such a manner. Everyone, including Paul Stamets, who in my opinion, is the most learned person on earth about mushrooms and cultivation has been slandered, insulted, etc. I understand when people are motivated by money, but this motivation of jealousy and ego baffles me! It is a crazy world. Would you like me to provide ACCURATE pictures and info for free with all rights to you! I have pictures taken by myself of many kinds of Psilocybe and Panaeolus Mushrooms. They were all taken in Martin County and St. Lucie County Florida. I also have a picture of a new Species of Sundew I discovered growing in Pt. St. Lucie County that really shouldn't even be there! Siting and usage of public domain images

I have spent several days attempting to figure this out on my own... theater

I'd like to know if I can put here a play that I'm acting in this moment, sinopsis, photos, video? Thank you very much — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mercees (talk • contribs) 09:09, 5 July 2013‎ (UTC)

This is a tricky question. First assess, whether it would be in scope of Commons. Then, you have to check the copyright situation:

  • Is the text you are reciting free (is the author still alive [if so, will you get written permission by them] or when did they die)
  • Is there music in the play/recording? (recording rights, performance rights, copyright of text and music).
  • You need written permission by the person who took the recording (recording rights).
  • You need written permission by the Costume- and Scene Designers (copyright).

If you are still interested, let us know. We will help you to guide you through the steps. Best -- Rillke(q?) 08:56, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

For still photos (as opposed to video), there would be no problem with performance rights. Also, in the United States at least, there would be no need to get permission from the costume designer, because clothing as being worn by people is generally considered "functional" or "utilitarian", and so uncopyrightable. As for set design, a scenic backdrop or similar might cause a problem, but ordinary on-stage props (furniture etc.) would usually not be a problem. AnonMoos (talk) 09:41, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

Reuploading previously deleted files

Moved here from Commons talk:Community portal#Uploading a picture. Commons talk:Community portal is solely intended for discussions about the page Commons:Community portal.

Hello i uploaded some pictures/images (i own) which were deleted because of no evidence . now i hav OTRS # for those pictures and i want to upload again. but it gives error: 'There was another file already on the site with the same content, but it was deleted'. can any one please help me on this. How can i upload the images again as now i have OTRS #. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rizwantdf (talk • contribs) 13:09, 8 July 2013‎ (UTC)

According to Special:Log/Rizwantdf, you haven't uploaded any files. Did you use a different user name? In any case, you should not recreate previously deleted files yourself. If the evidence that you have sent in to OTRS is approved as sufficient, the volunteer handling it will ensure that the files are restored. LX (talk, contribs) 16:00, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
Yes you are right i uploaded from another id. I sent an email from my website server email id for volunteering the matter of site. in response of which i received an OTRS # . i could not get what u mean by If the evidence that you have sent in to OTRS is approved as sufficient — Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.186.155.194 (talk • contribs) 16:50, 8 July 2013‎ (UTC)
Try Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard with your OTRS# and the file names.--Canoe1967 (talk) 18:29, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
Generally, you should not be using multiple accounts unless there's a good reason to. The OTRS process is explained at Commons:OTRS. Having received an OTRS ticket number just means that you have sent something in to our permission archive. It does not mean that what you've sent in has been reviewed yet. Before the files can be restored, one of our volunteers has to check if what you've sent in is actually evidence of an acceptable licensing permission. LX (talk, contribs) 20:05, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
ok that make sense . can any one please guide how can i request volunteer (who deleted the images) to restore them ,is there any procedure for that? If yes, approximately how long it takes? And can i see the volunteer's name so that i can discuss on his user talk page ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.69.13.181 (talk • contribs) 06:17, 9 July 2013‎ (UTC)
If what you have sent in constitutes evidence of an acceptable licensing permission, you do not need to do or request anything. If there's a need for additional information or discussion, the volunteer will get back to you. As explained on Commons:OTRS, the current backlog for tickets in English is about one day (recently down from 100+ days). LX (talk, contribs) 14:34, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
will there be any problem if i am using a new id . caz i forgot the password of previous one and also did not gave any email id. and what is meant by Recently down from 100+ days ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.69.13.181 (talk • contribs) 15:26, 9 July 2013‎ (UTC)
If the OTRS volunteers need anything from you, they will contact you through the e-mail address you used to contact them. What the OTRS backlog going from 100+ days to 1 day means is that you should only have to wait for one day instead of three months to hear back from them. LX (talk, contribs) 15:52, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
I checked the my website domain email id there is no email from volunteer and many days have passed since i got OTRS # but still when i try to use the images it shows that these were deleted. what step should i take ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rizwantdf (talk • contribs) 14:57, 10 July 2013‎ (UTC)

May I upload a Soviet/Russian photograph from around 1925?

This. The same picture appears in a Russian book with the label "Ф. В. Токарев с сыном Николаем у ручного пулемета системы Максима-Токарева образца 1925 г.", which means it was taken around 1925. Based on the time frame when this gun was designed & produced, the photograph dates from 1923-1928. Someone not using his real name (talk) 07:46, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

How can I transfer a free video from flickr to Commons?

Hello. This is the file that I want to transfer to Commons. I tried with Flickr2Commons, but it didn't work. Is there a simple way to do it? Vcohen (talk) 20:00, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

The file itself is here, and its extension is mp4. I tried to convert it to ogg using zamzar.com and media.io, but both of them create a file with audio only. Vcohen (talk) 14:19, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

It's OK, I have uploaded it. The right converter is http://video.online-convert.com/convert-to-ogg, and the file is here. Please correct me if something is wrong with licensing or so. Vcohen (talk) 17:07, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Where is the option for cases where someone else has taken a photograph of you and yet you own the entire copyright to it? Please add a section for that. There's not even anything helpful for that yet. Softlavender (talk) 08:23, 15 July 2013 (UTC)

You'll need to send in a scanned copy of the en:Copyright transfer agreement, work for hire contract or employment record to our permission archive. (If you don't have any of those, you're probably not the copyright holder.) Then, if you're using the Upload Wizard, in the Release rights step, select This file is not my own work. Enter a source (e.g. "Work made for hire"), enter the author (the photographer's name), select Another reason not mentioned above, and in the input field, enter something like {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}}{{subst:OP}} (you can change the cc-by-sa-3.0 part to a different license of your choosing). I'm not sure what the "it" you're referring to is, but we don't host .bmp files either. The Windows bitmap format is horribly inefficient. You should use JPEG (for lossy compression of photos) or PNG (for lossless compression and images with uniformly colored fields such as logotypes). LX (talk, contribs) 10:24, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

how to upload biography with photos to Wiki Commons

I'm trying to submit a biography of Arlyn Gale, a singer/songwriter/recording artist from the 1970s but wiki won't accept the file which ends in .doc. Help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Katemagruder (talk • contribs) 15:18, 15 July 2013‎ (UTC)

We don't host any .doc files. There are two main reasons for this:
  • .doc is a file suffix typically used to denote files that primarily consist of text. Wikimedia Commons is a media repository. We primarily host media files: images, video and audio. See Commons:Project scope/Summary.
  • .doc is a file suffix typically used to denote a non-standard, proprietary legacy file format. Commons only hosts free content in free file formats. See Commons:File types. LX (talk, contribs) 16:32, 15 July 2013 (UTC)

Katemagruder -- Aside from problems with Microsoft Word files, we don't really host articles here. If Arlyn Gale is "notable" by Wikipedia standards, then you should go to Wikipedia to start an article on him over there. AnonMoos (talk) 06:55, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

I'm guessing Arkturo's unsigned question is unrelated to 202.53.12.44's unsigned question, despite being posted under the same heading.
Arkturo, unless you tell us what you're having difficulty with, it's going to be very hard for anyone to help you. A few pointers, though:
  • God isn't here right now, but we'll be happy to take a message. ;-)
  • You're not on Wikipedia (wikipedia.org). This site is Wikimedia Commons (commons.wikimedia.org), a repository of free, educational media files used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others. It's a separate project with a different set of goals and rules. (Knowing what site you're on is a good practice in general to avoid being subjected to phishing scams.)
  • Commons has a very specific purpose, and we host only quite specific content. As I understand it, you want to upload drawings of superhero cartoon characters. If these are copyrighted characters from DC Comics, Marvel or similar, we cannot accept images of them, even if you've drawn them yourself. On the other hand, if they are not based on someone else's copyrighted characters, they might not be notable enough to be realistically useful for an educational purpose. Commons is not your personal free web host.

Files not uploading

I have to date uploaded 10 of the 12 volumes of the old Hastings Encyclopedia of Religion and Ethics from archive.org here. Unfortunately, my attempts to upload volumes 1 and 4 have to date been unsuccessful, for various technical reasons. I intend to use them here as the basis for putting the articles form it on WikiSource, which "strongly encourages" the files be uploaded to commons first. I have already finished a few dozen, generally shorter, articles from volume 1 for inclusion in WikiSource, but can't really put them there until I have that volume available here, nor could I work on the longer articles from the other volume, which, after a bit of thought, are probably reasonably the ones to be added first. If anyone could find out what is wrong with the files preventing them from uploading, or find alternate versions of them which can be uploaded, please do so. Thank you.
