Do you have and thing on learning American Sign Language? I would like videos, exercises (printable), and charts? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dpratt67 (talk • contribs) 16:24, 29 May 2013‎ (UTC)

We have various files at Category:American Sign Language etc., but organized tutorials would be more suitable for Wikiversity or Wikibooks... AnonMoos (talk) 06:30, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

how do i upload a file if it's docx?

I'm trying to upload a file, but I don't know what program I need to download in my computer to upload it, or how I can upload it if it's docx. What should I do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by And.lopor123 (talk • contribs) 17:50, 1 June 2013‎ (UTC)

We don't host any .docx files. There are two main reasons for this:
  • .docx is a file suffix typically used to denote files that primarily consist of text. Wikimedia Commons is a media repository. We primarily host media files: images, video and audio. See Commons:Project scope/Summary.
  • .docx is a file suffix typically used to denote an essentially proprietary and pseudo-standard file format. Commons only hosts free content in free file formats. See Commons:File types.

Re-upload a file which has been incorrectly deleted

I have a photograph of a person. The author of the photograph has granted an explicit permission to upload the file on Wikipedia. However, the file was deleted when I first uploaded it. Now I am not allowed to repeat the procedure. What should I do? -- Avellano (talk) 13:54, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

The approved method is to ask at Commons:Undeletion requests... AnonMoos (talk) 17:03, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

I want to upload an animated SVG

I want to upload an animated SVG file. Obviously it contains JavaScript and so the upload is rejected.

Is there any process where the file could be examined by a person and vetted to verify that it isn't evil? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Frustratingnamesearch (talk • contribs) 20:09, 4 June 2013‎ (UTC)

Javascript-animated SVG is not allowed, but there's a different type of SVG animated with SMIL which is allowed. See Category:Animated SVG... AnonMoos (talk) 02:41, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

literary works by arjunprasad

D/Sir I Want a new section for my literary work as the name literary works by arjunprasad author but how? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arjun prasad1 (talk • contribs) 15:44, 7 June 2013‎ (UTC)

This site is for media files fixed in a concrete visual, audio, or audio-visual form, not really for "literary works"... AnonMoos (talk) 03:20, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

Uploading a new version of an existing file

Must it be in the same file format? The existing is tiff; I am trying to upload a jp2 version. Thank you very much. Hamblin (talk) 18:45, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

I believe the answer is yes, it needs to be the same file format, if only because the extension to the original file will be .tif and that won't be what your file is. You'll get a warning; it shouldn't let you overwrite it. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 19:52, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
OK, thanks a lot. Hamblin (talk) 21:54, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

File:Brian Schatz, official portrait, 113th Congress 2.jpg

For some reason, when I uploaded this file, it will not display on the main page of the image. If you click the image however, it displays the image. Any idea why this is occuring? Gage (talk) 20:50, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

Not 100% sure what the problem was, but I eliminated all metadata with a lossless tool, and it seems to be working now.... AnonMoos (talk) 05:36, 9 June 2013 (UTC)

Creative Commons

Does the "Creative Commons Attribution 3.0" allow me to keep the copyright of my work while giving a license for others to use it? Or does it remove my copyright interest in the image?

I don't know how it is differnt from the "Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike 3.0?"

Thanks Dan — Preceding unsigned comment added by Danielteolijr (talk • contribs) 21:48, 8 June 2013‎ (UTC)

In both licenses you retain basic copyright ownership, but irrevocably allow others to make use of the work in certain ways. The "SA" clause means that derivatives of your work must be released under the same license... AnonMoos (talk) 04:55, 9 June 2013 (UTC)

It doesn't look like anyone who speaks Spanish is going to answer you. You might have more luck at Commons:Café. The file that you uploaded, File:Bibliografía Cristología (2001-2011).pdf has been deleted because it was missing licensing information needed to explain why you think it constitutes free content. Category:Mutant Geohumus Pumpkin

Hi:

I used the feature to upload multiple files at once to create this:

Category:Mutant_Geohumus_Pumpkin

The original files were sequentially numbered. During the upload, numbers forming part of the file names, were changed somehow. So now there's a load of "52" pictures and also the number of pix went above the original count. I only had 141 files.

I don't know how to fix this and I think changing file names is something I can't do in the first place, so I am kindly requesting assistance.

Best regards,

Achim--Achim Hering (talk) 05:42, 29 May 2013 (UTC)

The same thing just happened again. I have numbered my pictures as part of the file names, 1 of 63 through 63 of 63. The upload wizard then changes the numbers partway through.

Could an admin please look at this and fix the wizard, OR if uploading numbered pictures does not work, then perhaps there needs to be a very propinent warning yout this in the instructions right where the uploading is taking place? Thank you. --Achim Hering (talk) 01:05, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

Upload Wizard bugs must be reported to bugzilla: (where they at least get the attention of the bugmeister) or to Commons:Upload Wizard feedback where they are likely lost. Admins can't change how the wizard works. You need development access and a reviewer if you want to fix it. If you want to rename the files yourself, you may ask at COM:RFR for the file mover user right. -- Rillke(q?) 22:58, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

Not valid or not a license error

When I tried to upload a file I got an error saying "This does not seem to be valid wikitext, or does not contain a license" in the license field. I used the {{LGPL}} tag. Which is listed in Commons:Copyright_tagsdeed.en page. Is this a bug or is LGPL not a valid license? The page says "do not use this as the only license for your work if you can avoid it", but I uploaded a modified LGPL licensed picture so I can't avoid it. –Honsvu (talk) 19:28, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

{{LGPL}} is actually a redirect to {{LGPLv2.1+}}. Use that template directly (if that's the applicable version), and it should work. (The Upload Wizard detects valid licenses by checking if the template is in Category:License tags, but redirects are not categorised.) LX (talk, contribs) 11:22, 11 June 2013 (UTC)
OK. Thanks. –Honsvu (talk) 06:10, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

Is it possible to edit or replace an uploaded photo?

I recently uploaded 2 identical photos of mine (accidentally), then realized the photo looks too dark. I brightened up the shot and uploaded it, but it was deleted by the Commons, so how do I get the edited (brightened) version of this photo up and usable for my Wiki page. This is a picture that my wife took, so there are no copyright issues here. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dave_Meniketti.jpg — Preceding unsigned comment added by DMeniketti (talk • contribs) 17:31, 13 June 2013‎ (UTC)

I just uploaded a newer version that I thought was the brighter one. Below the history is an 'upload new version' link that you can use to replace it. After you decide which one to keep then use Template:Duplicate on the one you want deleted.--Canoe1967 (talk) 22:06, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

Requesting help on correct wording

I'd like to upload scans from the Times of London authored by Edmund Beckett Denison, First Baron Grimthorpe (1816-1905). Obviously {{PD-1923}} applies, but I'm at a loss as to what country-specific tag to use. I'd appreciate any help. Lesser Cartographies (talk) 12:17, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

Replying to myself: After a bit more digging I think I'll go with {{PD-1923}} and {{PD-UK-posthumous-non-photo-1996}}. Lesser Cartographies (talk) 17:47, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

Photo of F100D

Does the photogepher or anyone else have any more pictures of the 615th squadron planes during that time. My brother was shot down 04-03-1965 the same time frame of the picture. Dave Smith -- 19:07, 24 June 2013‎ 71.101.0.244

The photo was taken from a book and the photographer was with the USAF, I think. You could try emailing the squadron and see if they have more. Photographs of coins

I made a photo of a coin issued by the national bank of Ukraine, which licence applies to this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Michaelcochez (talk • contribs) 09:21, 26 June 2013‎ (UTC)

According to Commons:Currency#Ukraine, Ukrainian currency is not copyrighted, and {{PD-UA-exempt}} applies to the design of the coin. Your photo may be eligible for copyright protection, since it's a photograph of a three-dimensional object. In that case, you'd be the copyright holder, and you can choose to release the photo under a license of your own choosing or release it into the public domain. Upload Wizard down

So, is Upload Wizard gone now? I get the old form now instead when I try to upload files. --EncycloPetey (talk) 18:17, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

Seems to have come back now. Transient error? --EncycloPetey (talk) 19:11, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
I never use the Upload Wizard myself, but it seems to have had a number of "transient errors" over the last months... AnonMoos (talk) 22:04, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
I avoid it under most situations, as it's too cumbersome for the audio files I normally upload, and I'd have to individually edit the files afterwards. The old form is much faster for the kind of batch loading that I normally do. However, I tried using the Wizard for a batch of related images yesterday and found two built-in problems. (1) If you select to "copy" the category information to all the other uploads in a batch, then you get a warning that you haven't filled in the categories. The Wizard can't tell that copied categories are there. (2) You can't upload FILE.png if there is a FILE.jpg present. So, if you've uploaded your image files in JPG format, only to discover afterwards that Commons prefers PNG for the kind of image file uploaded, you then have to move or delete all the JPG files first. You won't find this out until you've spent fifteen minutes in the Wizard filling out all the checkboxes, at which point you've got a lot of work invested in the upload and would rather not do it again. So if you're not an admin, that means quickly moving each file individually, tagging the moved files for deletion individually, tagging the redirects that were automatically created by the system, and manually reverting the automatic notice to Commons Delinker that the system sent. . . all so you can complete a failed upload. It's a heckova lot of work the way it's set up. --EncycloPetey (talk) 20:58, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

hi, i need to ask one question about that. i've taken by myself a photo 1 year ago of an italian actress named lodovica mairè rogati and i want to upload on commons to get the code in order to public that image on her wiki page. That image was never published on internet or on papers, magazines etc. is only mine. Is there any problem with copyright? is mrs. Rogati owner of copyright or im the owner? i dont want to create any problem with wikipedia so i ask in advance how can i publish that photo. sorry for my english. cheers

fabrizio doni -- 15:13, 27 June 2013‎ Fulghore

The photographer is normally the copyright holder. You may wish to add Template:Personality rights and Template:Consent to it as well.--Canoe1967 (talk) 17:07, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

ok thanks a lot for your fast answer but im very new to wikipedia. how can i use that templates? its enought to add the template name in the file name? please help me about that because i just have an advise for a wrong upload and i risk write block of my account. thanks in advance -- 18:24, 27 June 2013‎ Fulghore

I usually just copy/paste the from the template page under 'usage'. You need to include the strange brackets. so it looks like --> {{personality rights}} in the edit window. You also need a license template. Template:Cc-by-3.0 is a fairly common one. Category:License tags has a few thousand more. Edit File:Lucy Wigmore Sydney 2011.jpg top see how the templates look in the edit window. You need not worry about being blocked unless you upload lots of images that aren't yours after a warning or two.--Canoe1967 (talk) 19:09, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

Can't replace bitmap with SVG

I'm trying to replace a bitmap with an SVG equivalent per WP:USOP yet I keep getting an error: 'File extension ".jpg" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (image/svg+xml)'. Do I really need to upload the vector graphic as a new file? Rka (talk) 17:52, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

Yes, a new file name is required. Please also note that due to bugzilla:46741, it's not done with exchanging the file extension. -- Rillke(q?) 19:21, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
Okay, thanks! Rka (talk) 19:26, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
