Replacing a file

I would like to replace the following 2009 self-portrait:

File:SteveDeger.jpg.jpg

with an updated 2013 version. How does one replace a file? I can't find instructions for doing so.

SdegerSdeger (talk)

since there is a 4 year between the photos, just upload the new photo separately. replacing a file is only for when the uploader of the file makes changes to the file (such as lighting, crop) but it is basically the same file.

How can I download the Shania Twain Video album - Live in Chicago? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.1.255.96 (talk • contribs) 06:02, 9 May 2013‎ (UTC)

This is a page for asking for help with uploading files to Wikimedia Commons, a repository of free media. Since a Shania Twain concert would not be an example of free media, you can neither download it from Commons nor upload it to the site. The rights appear to be held by Universal Music, so I suggest contacting their customer service to ask if they have made it available for digital download through any online store. Upload Wizard hangs in Opera

Within the last 2 days Special:UploadWizard hangs in Opera browser when I try to upload a file. I click the "Upload file" link on the main page. The Upload Wizard page loads with its "Please visit Commons:Upload help if you need to ask questions" line, but the animated "wait" icon spins and the "Select media files to upload" button never appears. I have tried bypassing the cache. I am using Opera 12.15 build 1748 (the latest version, installed today) and XP Professional version 2002 Service Pack 3, with all updates applied. In Opera, javascript is enabled and the popup blocker is off. The Upload Wizard works fine in IE8. Thanks in advance for your help. --Chetvorno (talk) 07:50, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

HELP - PDF to SVG Image Convert/Upload Problem.

Seems converting a PDF Image File to an equivalent SVG Image File via Inkscape (0.48.4 r9939) - and then uploading to Wikimedia Commons - could have gone better in some way? - seems the *uploaded* SVG image is substantially different from the original PDF image (and converted SVG image) - Please Advise? - Thanks for your help in advance - and - Enjoy! :) Drbogdan (talk) 14:10, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

It's not convenient for me to download a 19-meg SVG file and look inside it, but when the SVG is 20 times the size of the original PDF, is a safe bet that something slightly strange has happened. Upload File not working again!!

Here we go again. Firefox 16. Upload File stopped working for me for a long time a couple months ago and I posted here; it mysteriously started working again, so no complaints. But as of RIGHT NOW (within the last couple of hours), Upload File now no longer works for me on this browser and even worse, my private .js "Direct upload" link is gone from my Participate menu on the left. What happened?? – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 21:11, 15 May 2013 (UTC)

Ok some more details: Upload Wizard (which is what I mean by "Upload file" above) is also missing links at the top (AGAIN) to the direct upload links. I do have a private "DerivativeFX" link in my Participate menu that fortunately did not disappear, so I can still easily access the original upload menu links—including an upload page that when I go to, my "Direct Upload" link (which links to here) appears. So something is messed up here. I can try a different browser later but this freaky stuff just shouldn't be happening. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 21:14, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
Apparently this is a site-wide problem, according to Commons:Village_pump#Gadgets_and_tools_have_disappeared.2C_and_other_problems. So at least it's not just me. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 21:23, 15 May 2013 (UTC)

meaning of 'remix' in the licenses

I am currently translating the commons file uploading licences at translatewiki.net. In the text "(Anyone may use, share or remix these works....)" is "adapt" an acceptable synonym for "remix"? Or does "remix" refer specifically to remixing an audio file? Lloffiwr (talk) 11:35, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

Adapt is indeed an acceptable synonym (and in my opinion, it's the preferred term). It's what Creative Commons themselves use in their summary, and "adaptation" is the term used in the actual legal code (see section 1 a for the full definition). LX (talk, contribs) 18:15, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

Meaning of identify in licenses

I am (still) working on the translation of the Upload Wizard and Commons licenses on translatewiki.net. I would like clarification of the meaning of "identified" in the public domain license. The word is written in bold but I have been unable to find it in the Creative Commons glossary. Does anyone know where this word is defined on Creative Commons?

The definition in Dictionary.com is "to recognize or establish as being a particular person or thing", and in Wiktionary is "To establish the taxonomic classification of an organism" (biology) or "To establish the identity of someone or something". Failing receipt of chapter and verse from Creative Commons, is it correct to take (or identify!) the meaning in this context to be "to establish and record that a work is 'free of known restrictions under copyright law, including all related and neighboring rights.'"? Lloffiwr (talk) 20:05, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

Can't help you with those philosophical conundra, but there seems to be an official Spanish translation already at http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/mark/1.0/deed.es -- AnonMoos (talk) 03:50, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I believe that your interpretation is correct. The phrase "determined to be" is another suitable English synonym for "identified" in this context. I assume that the word is boldfaced mainly to distinguish the Public Domain Mark from the Public Domain Dedication. The latter indicates that the copyright holder has released the work into the public domain. The former means that someone (with no particular relation to the work) has asserted that the work is in the public domain (on grounds which may or may not be specified, but which do need to be specified for Commons to host it). LX (talk, contribs) 14:08, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

historic photo

I have some autographed photos of my mother's (but taken by an official photographer -but I'm not sure who) of the Naval Tripartite Commission of 1945 (in Berlin), including autographed photos of the 3 leading Admirals, (British, Russian and American) which might be interesting for readers on one or two of your existing pages (e.g. while you have a file photo of the US Admiral, Robert Ghormley, you have no photo of British Admiral Geoffrey John Audley Miles or the Russian Admiral Levchenko, who headed the respective teams, on their pages). So it would be 68 years old...the photographer might still be alive, although he might not have had the copyright anyway...? — Preceding unsigned comment added by PaulJBarker1 (talk • contribs) 10:43, 22 May 2013‎ (UTC)

Microsoft word files

I shouldn't even ask it because that WARNING should be in large red letters!

How come .doc are not downloadable? Alexnodopaka (talk) 10:11, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

I assume you mean "uploadable". Because 1) Traditionally ".doc" format is proprietary (the latest version of Microsoft word format is pseudo-open, which is a whole long story in itself). 2) Wikimedia Commons is really for media fixed in a particular concrete visual, audio, or audio-visual form. General word-processing files don't really fit this description. AnonMoos (talk) 17:23, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
We don't host any .doc files. Naturally, you cannot download files that don't exist. If you're wondering why you cannot upload files (after all, this is the upload help page), there are two main reasons:
  • .doc is a file suffix typically used to denote files that primarily consist of text. Wikimedia Commons is a media repository. We primarily host media files: images, video and audio. See Commons:Project scope/Summary.
  • .doc is a file suffix typically used to denote a non-standard, proprietary legacy file format. Commons only hosts free content in free file formats. See Commons:File types.

His main tumblr page looks like the image is CC-by-2.0 but the syntax linking it to the CC license page looks broken: "<a rel=”license” href=”http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/deed.es”><img alt=”Licencia Creative Commons” style=”border-width:0” src=”http://i.creativecommons.org/l/by-sa/2.0/80x15.png” /></a>

File deleted because of unfree flickr license?

Hello there,

I was going through my flickr stats and noticed some activity on one of my photos. I found my way here and found this within it:

"Warning: A file by that name has been deleted or moved. The deletion and move log for this page are provided here for convenience: 14:13, 23 May 2013 High Contrast (talk | contribs) deleted page File:Chris Wolstenholme in 2013.jpg (Unfree Flickr license: http://flickr.com/photos/28596587@N00/8430796938 is licensed under cc-by-nd-2.0) (global usage; delinker log)"

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jessicasarahs/8430796938

I tried to change the licensing on the photo and upload it myself, but now it's not letting me do so. I don't mind my photo being used. What can I do to allow it here?

Thanks,

Jessica S. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JessicaSarahS (talk • contribs) 08:31, 24. May 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for changing the license. Note that CC-By even allows commercial usage and it is more unlikely that you get cash through getty images for it in future. -- Rillke(q?) 09:10, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

Undesirable characters?

Why is this considered "undesirable characters" when uploading title for an image?

"The Property of Michael J. and Catherine Kreibuill, Canton Tp. Stark Co: Ohio. 1886."

Thanks. Northwest111Northwest111 (talk) 14:43, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

My guest is the colon, " : ". I may be wrong though. Try Stark Company, Ohio--Canoe1967 (talk) 20:35, 26 May 2013 (UTC)
Northwest111 -- there can sometimes be various semi-exotic character problems with filenames (Code page 1252 characters, LTR marks, non-BMP characters, etc.) which are not always visible in your uploading browser... AnonMoos (talk) 03:54, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

Archive of this page

Apparently there is an archive of old questions on this page. But where? I don't see a link to the archive anywhere on this page. I have tried adding /archive to the URL but no luck.

Also, automatic archiving is set at 4 days. That's a bit short for those of us who only have the chance to visit here at weekends. However, if we were to have easy access to the archive (via a link, or a hint on how to find it) this wouldn't be a problem. Lloffiwr (talk) 17:02, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

I tried a few from Category:Archival templates but none seemed to work. Probably my syntax.--Canoe1967 (talk) 19:37, 25 May 2013 (UTC)
That's a rather glaring omission – thanks for pointing it out. I've added a link and a search box to the top of the page. LX (talk, contribs) 19:56, 25 May 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for adding a link to search the archive. However, I think that the link goes to the wrong archive, the 'help desk' archive, instead of to the 'Upload help' archive. Also, I note that on the page Commons:Help_desk/Archive/2013/05 there is a link to the parent page 'Commons:Help desk | Archive' at the top of the page. But there is no such link at the top of Commons:Upload_help/Archive/2013/05. Lloffiwr (talk) 13:17, 26 May 2013 (UTC)
Well silly me. Now it should point to the right place. The reason the archives didn't link back to Commons:Upload help/Archive is that it didn't exist. I've created it now. LX (talk, contribs) 13:34, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

Image Confusion

Hello Upload help staff,

I have uploaded two different images with the same file name. Perhaps the uploader did not catch my mistake, but now I can do neither of the following:

  • Upload the same image (in an attempt to chose another filename). I received an error saying that the image has already been uploaded.
  • Open the image on the filename page (see image on the right).
. Although the filename page displays one of the images I uploaded with this filename, the other image shows up here.

Please look into the issue. --JustBerry (talk) 17:33, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

Just tag the one we don't need with Template:Duplicate. You may wish to add Template:Convert to SVG to the one that we should keep.--Canoe1967 (talk) 19:54, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

uploading a file

Why can't I upload a file from my Microsoft Word? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Salv Laurence Cachia (talk • contribs) 02:31, 27 May 2013‎ (UTC)

As it says above "Because 1) Traditionally ".doc" format is proprietary (the latest version of Microsoft word format is pseudo-open, which is a whole long story in itself). 2) Wikimedia Commons is for media fixed in a particular concrete visual, audio, or audio-visual form. General word-processing files don't really fit this description." -- AnonMoos (talk) 03:45, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

Uploading photos taken by another person and given to me

How do I fill in the form for uploading a file which has been given to me with all rights, but was created by another person. In specific, how do I fill in the source and author blocks? Cheers · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 06:38, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

You could use Special:Upload if the upload wizard doesn't have the correct options.. They should normallly send an email to Commons:OTRS which has a backlog. Something like File:Photograph of tourists permission form.png may work instead of email. Just have them write: "I, the photographer, release this image under Creative Commons license 3.0 with commercial use and derivatives allowed." Upload an image of the license they filled out first and then overwrite the file with the actual image like we do with press photos. File:Pamela Reed 1977.JPG is an example. Creating their own account is another solution.--Canoe1967 (talk) 09:44, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
What I am trying to find out is what to do in the following circumstances where there is no release form available for one of several possible reasons. For example:
  1. The photographs were inherited as part of a deceased estate.
  2. The photographs were taken by a random bystander of the subject at the subject's request using the subject's camera and there is no record of who the photographer was or how to contact them
  3. The photographs were taken at the request and direction of the owner by a third party who was in effect, holding the camera and pressing the button, either employed to do so, or as a favour.
Thanks, · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 10:28, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
Something like Template:CC-BY-SA-3.0-heirs for the first but may need permission of all the heirs if you are not the sole heir. You probably can't upload 2. For 3. you may be accepted as the 'producer' and have copyrights to the images with a verbal contract. That may depend on which country they were taken in.--Canoe1967 (talk) 10:56, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

Help please!!

Hello there,

I found this picture (Here) in Wikipedia Indonesia . Can I upload this picture in Wikipedia Arabic or Wikimedia Commons? Bo hessin (talk) 11:03, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

The file uses the template id:Template:HakciptaPenggunaanBebasTetapi. The equivalent here would be {{Attribution}}, but I see no basis for the claim that the copyright holder of the file allows anyone to use it for any purpose – mainly because the copyright holder is not identified. It looks like just another non-free image grabbed from some random website. The source site is Imageshack, which isn't exactly known for its regard for authors' rights or even documenting who uploaded what and when. LX (talk, contribs) 14:21, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

Logo of the Venezuelan Parliament

I want to upload the logo of the National Assembly of Venezuela (file); (source 1; source 2) yet I'm not sure what sort of license is applied or if there is any license to use. Being the logo of a governmental institution, is it free from copyright? Also I'm not entirely sure which are the specific laws regarding this in Venezuela. --Dainshku (talk) 22:13, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

{{PD-VenezuelaGov}} only covers texts, and none of the other points at Commons:CRT#Venezuela seem to apply either, so that would be a non-free logo. LX (talk, contribs) 23:17, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

Gymnastics (public event) youtube video upload help

I may have access to a 720p gymnastics video currently located on YouTube. The competition is public event, on private property (arena), in case anyone's interested. My problem is this:

  1. Most gymnastics events use music to some extent. The video has sound—I would want it without sound naturally—but YouTube has recognized this music and has disabled the uploader from allowing the video to be licensed under a creative commons license. Without actually requesting the uploader to disable the sound in her video (which I believe is permanent) and therefore ruining her video for most of her viewers—and assuming she replies by email, agreeing to the Declaration of Consent with a URL pointing at the youtube video (sans audio), which would be emailed to OTRS—would the high-resolution version of her video be retrievable by any clever people on this board?
  2. I have never converted and uploaded a video using Ogg T... or any fancy things, and yesterday I was researching all the Python methods and to be quite frank, it's beyond my capacity (embarrassing but there we are). If the video is retrievable, would anyone be willing to convert and upload the video for me—and as a bonus, possibly crop a certain portion to make a much, much shorter, second video for me? This second video would have to retain the best quality possible as I intend to nominate it for FP at some point. I would be absolutely grateful. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 21:26, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
