Photograph of a dead person

I want to upload a photography of a dead person into an existing article. I'm the owner of the rihgts of this photograph. How do I have to proceed ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 5.147.93.86 (talk • contribs) 21:18, 3 February 2013‎ (UTC)

First of all, you have to create an account or log in if you already have one. You can't upload anything unless you're logged in. Next, you follow the steps of the Upload Wizard. How you answer the questions there depends on the circumstances of the photo. Who created it? You say that you own the rights to it – why is that? LX (talk, contribs) 21:31, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Undeletion request

Hi there, I own these files File:Life! Camera Action... Movie Poster.jpg & File:Another Day Another Life.jpg but for unknown reasons has been deleted. How do I request for these to be restored?Lcarg2012 (talk) 20:02, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

The reasons are stated in the file logs.[1][2] Please read the pages linked to (Commons:Derivative works and Commons:Screenshots, respectively). If you still think the deletion was incorrect, you can ask for the files to be restored at Commons:Undeletion requests. LX (talk, contribs) 20:30, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

Losslessly recompressing images

Why doesn't the upload process allow files to be replaced by better-compressed versions? It can apparently tell they have the same content. If the file size is smaller with the same content, why doesn't it just replace it with the smaller file? Olathe (talk) 22:38, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

Attribution NonCommercial ShareAlike 3.0

Can someone please tell me how to select Attribution NonCommercial ShareAlike 3.0 license when posting a new image. I do not see it as an option only the following licenses:

Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0 (legal code)
Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 (legal code)
Creative Commons CC0 Waiver (release all rights, like public domain: legal code)

And other licenses if the work is created by another person. I also do not see it as an option in the preferences under the upload wizard tab.

Versions of graphics in other sizes.

I made a version of File:Hypercube.svg -- File:Hypercube with 2 edges highlighted.png -- by highlighting two edges in contrasting colors to use in w:en:Edge (geometry). But I can't fit it into the 240x240 space there because the new uploader just makes a "thumbnail" link and gives no clue of how to make and upload other sizes. --Thnidu (talk) 05:58, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

I'm not all that sure what you're asking. The software won't generally deform a non-square image into a square shape because that's something which would only very rarely be genuinely useful. If you want a 240px-wide thumbnail use . If you want a 240px-high thumbnail use . By the way, it would have been better to make your revised image a vector SVG also... how to upload own photo to wiki page solve the problem

Description is "John Smith eating breakfast in New York's 112th Avenue McDonald's in July of 2011" type thing. Source is the photograpers name. If you are the photographer then just use Template:Own. Category:CC license tags has a few licences you can choose from. Template:Cc-by-3.0 is fairly common.--Canoe1967 (talk) 20:18, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Uploading files

I want to upload photos to wikipedia, but it keeps redirecting me to Wikimedia commons. How can I get the photos from wikimedia to wikipedia? Why do I have to wait four days before uploading photos directly to wikipedia?RichardCacioppo (talk) 15:10, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Which language edition of Wikipedia are you trying to upload to? Why do you not want to upload it to Wikimedia Commons, where it can be used by all Wikipedia editions and all other Wikimedia projects?
Some Wikipedia projects have disabled local uploads. For projects that have made the choice not to rely on fair use provisions and instead allow only free content, there is not much reason to allow local uploads. The projects that do allow local uploads often restrict uploads from newly created accounts as a barrier against vandalism, but you should probably ask about the reasons at the project in question. LX (talk, contribs) 15:26, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
English edition. I did upload it to the commons first. I can't get it from the commons onto my wiki page. at this point I want to delete my uploads and try again since now it keeps telling me that everything is a duplicate. RichardCacioppo (talk) 18:14, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
Files uploaded to Commons can be used on all Wikimedia projects, including English Wikipedia. Simply edit the page on which you want the illustration to appear and add something like in an appropriate place. See en:Help:Visual file markup over at English Wikipedia for additional hints.
If there's a problem with your existing uploads, you should edit the file description pages (the same way you edit any wiki page) and fix the problem, rather than trying to upload the same file again. The duplicate file detection also detects if the file you're trying to upload is a duplicate of something that's been uploaded before and deleted. The reason for this is that if a file has already been deleted in the past, there's usually a reason for that reason, so if it is to be restored, it should be discussed first. So deleting your existing uploads would just lead to more trouble. LX (talk, contribs) 18:29, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

OK, that makes sense. when I try edit the file description nothing changes. Now that you've explained it to me, I don't want to make it more difficult by deleting them, but whenever I do edit the description, it doesn't work. RichardCacioppo (talk) 18:41, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Let's back up a bit and see if we can help you gain your bearings.
You can find a list of your upload actions at Special:Log/RichardCacioppo. So far, you've uploaded eight files, and you've updated one of them (File:Myers final.jpg) with a new version (which is actually exactly the same as the original; I'm guessing you were trying to update the file description). One file has been deleted and appears as a red link: File:Everson cleaner.png. According to the deletion log (which you'll see if you click that red link), this file was a screenshot of a non-free, copyrighted website. Administrators have the ability to undelete files, so if that deletion was not correct, it can be fixed, but let's set that aside for now.
It looks like all of your remaining uploads are drawings from old patents. Those are typically in the public domain, and the copyright tag to use for this is PD-US-patent. What you need to do is basically what User:Gajolen did in this edit: replace the line that says "Remove this line and insert a license instead" with PD-US-patent. For files that have also been marked with No license, you can remove this line as well. I could easily do this for you, but I reckon you'll learn more by doing it yourself. For File:Davison cleaner fnal 2.jpg and File:Everson cleaner final 1.jpg, you should replace the PD-USGov with PD-US-patent. The drawings were created by the patent applicant and not by an employee of the US Federal Government, so the rationale given by PD-USGov does not apply here.
You also need to provide a verifiable source, so that others can check that PD-US-patent really applies. I suspect based on the yellow highlighting that you've found these drawings using Google Patents. A verifiable source for a file like File:Pansini final.jpg would be http://www.google.com/patents?id=0j9SAAAAEBAJ&zoom=4&pg=PA2#v=onepage&q&f=false. You can get a link like this by clicking the "chain" icon when viewing the relevant page in Google Patents. Please edit the "source=" lines on the file descriptions and provide verifiable source links.
To edit a file description, simply go to the file page in question (for example by clicking on the file names in your upload log) and press the edit tab at the very top of the page. Once you've fixed up your existing uploads, we can talk about how to avoid problems when uploading new files, but let's take it one step at a time for now. Thank you so much. I will try. RichardCacioppo (talk) 20:23, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Licence help

I've recently gained permission from a flickr author to upload his images from flickr. What licence do I need to use please? IJA (talk) 19:31, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Hello IJA! You had crossposted this question to my user talk page as well as the Administrators' noticeboard. Please don't do that, especially not without indicating that you have. It tends to split up discussions and cause people to respond to questions that have already been answered elsewhere when there are other things they could be doing with that time.
Wikimedia Commons (this site) is a repository of free media used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others. Commons only hosts content that can be used by anyone for any purpose, including commercial purposes. So for Commons to host the images, the copyright holder would have to agree to publish them under a license that allows anyone to use them for any purpose. Please note that permissions for use or uploading that are limited to Wikipedia, Commons or Wikimedia are not sufficient (and it's certainly no basis for claiming that the files have been released into the public domain, as you appear have claimed when uploading these files). If you don't know which license to use, it's probably because the copyright holder hasn't actually agreed to an actual free license.
If the author is actually willing to publish the photos under a license that does allow anyone to use them for any purpose, you should ask them to change the licensing status on Flickr from "© All Rights Reserved" to either "Creative Commons Attribution" or "Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike;" see Commons:Flickr files/Appeal for license change. Pictures of Royal Doulton Figurines

Hi, I uploaded some pictures of Royal Doulton figures, for example, http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Greta_HN1485.jpg and http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:A_Victorian_Lady_HN728.jpg. But I can see that they have been deleted. They were not my pictures but I did ask the the permission of the person whose they were and they said yes. They were taken by someone who is a seller of Doulton figures and has an ebay shop. Therefore I referenced the online shop, http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Richs-Royal-Doulton-and-Beswick, as the source and Richard Hatenboer as the photographer. Did I select the wrong licence? or is there another issue? Thanks, Tom. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thall69 (talk • contribs) 22:06, 13 February 2013‎ (UTC)

Since they were published at Ebay before here then you may need Commons:OTRS. An easier way may be to have him put a CC licence on his images on Ebay and have a trusted user check them. If he wants any of his images licenced then someone may be able to make a licence template for all images labeled as photographed by him at his Ebay store.--Canoe1967 (talk) 22:24, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Add a language to the upload wizard form

Good day, is it possible to add the Mi'kmaq language (iso code mic) to the list in the upload form? Amqui (talk) 04:00, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

I have created Template:mic. Amqui (talk) 04:10, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
Don't want to discourage you, but in general there's more interest in adding a broad range of interface messages translated into a particular language, not just adding one translated message in one place. See http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Translating:MediaWiki etc. AnonMoos (talk) 04:15, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
We started to record sound files from elders for pronunciation of Mi'kmaq words. It would be interesting if we could add the description of the file in the Mi'kmaq language on the file. See for example File:Sa'qitie'j.ogg. Translation of mediawiki on translatewiki in Mi'kmaq is already started (but very slow). Thanks, Amqui (talk) 20:06, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
Oh, I misunderstood (I thought you wanted the form itself translated). If you use the basic upload form, you have manual control, and you can add any tagging you want. AnonMoos (talk) 18:09, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

Regarding the upload of an old photo.

Hi, I am wondering if I could upload an old photo (photographed 62 years ago in 1950) as the copyright protection of that photo has expired by virtue of the Nepal Copyright Act, 2059 (2002), which clearly states that:

The economic and moral right of a work relating to applied art and photographic work shall be protected until twenty-five years from the year of preparation of such work.
- (chapter 3, article 14, sub-article 5.)

The picture I wanted to use is this one for the Wikipedia article 1950 Indo-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship, but if it is okay to upload in Wikimedia Commons then that will be great. Thank you! - Suniltheblue (talk) 15:44, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

PD-Nepal should apply. You also need to show that the work is in the public domain in the United States. It seems likely that Nepal applies, but more information regarding publication is needed to verify that. LX (talk, contribs) 11:29, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

For works published previously on the web by someone other than the uploader, we really prefer going through the OTRS system, since otherwise it may not be clear that the person who owns the rights fully understands what "giving permission" means in the context of Commons. Also, for recently-produced artistic objects, there may be copyright in the object which is distinct from copyright in the photograph of the object... AnonMoos (talk) 21:17, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
I think they are all in the UK. Does FOP UK cover them as statues or are they utilitarian? Other plans may be to have him tag his Ebay store with a CC-by licence for all images or just the ones he selects. A trusted user could verify the licences then.--Canoe1967 (talk) 23:12, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

Is there a better alternative to "Upload Wizard"

I'm a Wikipedian who has contributed hundreds of photos to Wikimedia, but I wish there was a better way to upload multiple photos. My problem with the Upload Wizard is that the interface is extremely cumbersome -- requiring me to switch back from typing on the keyboard, to clicking on the mouse, many times back and forth -- to enter the information for a single photo. I sometimes have to wait for the wizard to suggest possible categories for a specific photo (and then to click again on that). I would much prefer an upload interface, similar to Upload Wizard, but which uses the TAB keyboard function to allow me to move the cursor between opened input boxes, such as the photo's title, description, date, categories, and to simply skip over unneeded boxes. That way, I could type in all information for a multiple pictures entirely from the keyboard -- without having to shift between mouse and keyboard -- and this would vastly speed things up. If anybody reading this knows a better alternative to Upload Wizard, please let me know, thanks in advance.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 13:55, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Combining text and photos

I uploaded text and photos. How do I combine them onto one page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Warbirdfan (talk • contribs) 19:33, 26 February 2013‎ (UTC)

There are a few points that need to be sorted out here.
 1. Wikimedia Commons (this site) is a media repository. We generally don't host PDF files such as File:B-24 Liberator Hot Stuff, the first heavy bomber in the 8th Air Force to complete 25 mission in WW II..pdf, which would probably be more appropriate as editable wiki text on English Wikipedia. Images hosted on Commons can easily be included in wiki pages on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.
 2. Did you really create File:Lt. Gen. Frank M. Andrews.jpg yourself, and was this photograph really taken in 2013? That seems quite unlikely considering the subject died in 1943. This file appears to be a low-resolution copy of en:File:FMApic2.jpg, which is also available in a less tightly cropped version at File:Frank-M-Andrews.jpg.
 3. Did you really create File:B-24 Liberator Hot Stuff Crew.jpg yourself (including both the layout and the two photographs)?
 4. Did you really create File:B-24D LIberator Hot Stuff serial number 41-23728.jpg, and was it really taken in 2010? The markings at the top suggest that it was taken on 1942-10-31, which seems more likely.
