Commons:IG Commons Hub/Sound Photography

OVERVIEW

In the bid for community development and capacity building, the Igbo Commons Hub hosted its monthly meet up for the month of Novermber on the 24th of November, 2023 and the best audio winner for Wiki Loves Africa 2023, Abdullahi Abubakar, a sound designer trained the community members on ‘’’Sound photography’’’ with hands on practical on what sound is, the importace of sound and sound design, how to design sound, the elements of sound design and how sound can bring to the imagination of the viewers the information a photograph is passing when it is been added to it. The meeting was moderated by Ngozi P. Osuchukwu (Dr.).

SOUND

Abdullahi Abubakar defined sound as a form of energy that travels through the air in waves. The waves make particles vibrate, creating compression and rarefactions and our ears interpret these vibrations as sound. The sound also can vary in pitch and volume.

SOUND DESIGN

Sound design is the art of using sound elements to create a rich, engaging auditory experience in movies, TV shows and also photography.

Importance of sound design

• Sound is crucial for an immersive and audiovisual experience.
• It enhances storytellinng by conveying dialogue, emotions and plot porogression.

Elements of sound design

1. Dialogue: Dialogue forms the backbone of story telling and it involves recording, editing and mixing audio.
2. Sound Effects (SFX): Sound Effects adds depths and realism to scenes and it ranges from subtle nuances to attention grabing elements.
3. Foley: Foley is the act of creating customs sounds for onscreen actions. It enhances authenticity by synchronizing sounds with visuals.
4. Music: Music sets moods, evokes emotions and emphasizes narrative beats. It creates a powerful emotional connection with the audience.
5. Ambienceː Ambiance provides the sonic backdrop for a scene and its establishes the atmosphere and context of the environment.

All these elements works harmoniously to transport the audience into the world of production. It aslo shapes audience perception, enhance storytelling and create a truly immersive experience.

1. DaVinci Resolve (for editing, color, VFX, motion graphics and audio)
2. Audacity (digital audio editor and recording application software)
3. YouTube audio library (to download sound track)
