Image of de.wiki
Hi, I'm developing the article of pt:Mainz 05 and I found a image in de.wiki that is in public domain, but need a analysis to upload in Commons. Is it possible? Mr. Fulano (talk) 00:39, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

Removal of empty subcategory
Hello.
Don't know if this is the right place to ask but due a spelling mistake, I created a subcategory named "Ballistique" which is now empty as I transfered its files to a new subcategory called "Balistique" (with a single "l" when spelled in French : this is the name of a department in a French organization).
Could I ask someone to please :
- 1- Remove the redundant (and now empty) "Ballistique" subcategory and :
- 2- Rename the subcategory "Balistique" into "Balistique IRCGN" to make it consistent with the other subcategories I created in the same category .
Thanks in advance and sorry for the trouble.

Joey Tyler Hawkins
I need help if someone could please help me. It's about this:
This person does not exist. Everything on his page is a lie. There is no Hawkins Studios. That man in his photo is a professional model. This person is using the photo without permission instead of a real photo of himself. Ugh! How do we get this page deleted? This lousy T-shirt (talk) 20:32, 30 September 2016 (UTC)

Public Domain
I have an image taken from a digitized copy of a book published in 1903. Would this image automatically be in the public domain because it was published before 1920? If I can use i in Wikimedia, where can I find the wording to use to indicate its public license? And what do I need to include to document the origin? Thanks, Drbones1950 (talk) 02:15, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
- If the book was first published in USA, you can use Pd-1923. If it was first published in another country, you should use the above mentioned template plus another template to indicate that the book is in public domain (if it is, of course) in the source country. File Name
Just wondering. I uploaded my first image of Bryce Canyon in Utah. It kept telling me that that file name was already in use. How many file names are there for a monument like Bryce Canyon? I finally entered 'Visit Bryce Canyon'. Is that the correct way of doing this? Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dslcards (talk • contribs) 02:20, 01 October 2016 (UTC)
- @Dslcards: That is quite good name. If this happens again you can also try some variations of "Bryce Canyon, September 2007" etc. This kind of thing can happen with popular subjects. Category:Bryce Canyon National Park and its subcategories contain 1095 images, and a couple of hundred of them start with "Bryce Canyon". MKFI (talk) 08:30, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
Categories
When I upload a photo and fill out the required info I come to the category window.
For example, I upload an image of a plaza in Seville by the name of Plaza de Nuevo, in Seville, in Spain.
The categories I would choose are: Spain, Seville, and Plaza de Nuevo.
Spain and Seville are common categories. But when I type in Plaza de Nuevo, I am prompted that there is no category for that, and that I should give edit required information, or continue.
My question is: Should Plaza de Nuevo be a category or should "Plazas" be the category.
Everything is uploading fine, however, I want our friends to be able to access the image easily.
Please advise, and thank you for your assist!
D. Scott Lee (dslcards) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dslcards (talk • contribs) 02:05, 02 October 2016 (UTC)
- It could go in Category:Squares in Seville, and then it shouldn't be in either Category:Seville or Category:Spain. See Commons:OVERCAT. --ghouston (talk) 03:24, 2 October 2016 (UTC)
Mancano di it e Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in Italy - Veneto. Credo che il problema era che sono stati caricati con Upload Wizard piuttosto che attrraverso WLM. (Mi scuso per eventuali errori nel mio italiano.) - Jmabel ! talk 16:26, 2 October 2016 (UTC)
Warning: One of the categories lacks a description page.
I have posted this inquiry earlier but got no response so I will try again to see if someone knows the answer.
When I upload an image with the Upload Wizard I do the following:
Title Description Date Categories
With the Categories, sometimes I get a warning that "oone of the categories lacks a description page. Are you sure you typed the name correctly? For instance if I type in the name of the Lake in the photo, like Wiwane Lake, it comes up red. How does this effect the upload if I continue? Can I only use 'categories' that are already on Wikimedia Commons?
Thank you for you time. I appreciate it. Donald Scott Lee — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dslcards (talk • contribs) 14:35, 02 October 2016 (UTC)
- Generally, if you use a category that is not already on Wikimedia Commons, you will need to create the category. It is not very useful to use a nonexistent category.
- You might want to read Commons:Categories some time: it will give you a much better understanding of how categories work on Commons. They are quite different from (for example) Flickr tags. - Jmabel ! talk 16:51, 2 October 2016 (UTC)

- Nice crop.
- I added back some categories that you didn't bring over from the other photo. Generally, when doing this, you should bring over all categories unless they don't pertain to the cropped image (e.g. you cropped out what the category related to).
- Most importantly, I did one step you missed: I used the "other versions" to relate the two images, using Extracted from and Image extracted. - Jmabel ! talk 15:49, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
- Fixed Information template. Ruslik (talk) 19:41, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
- I cropped the original version with CropTool in lossless mode (to prevent quality loss) and used my crop to overwrite File:Jason Brennan portrait.jpg. The result is a higher resolution and lower filesize. ★ Poké95 03:24, 9 October 2016 (UTC)

Comments in File History
How do you fix the "comments" section of the File History to make it a bit less ramble-like? MPD (t - c - u) 18:47, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
- What do you mean by "fix"? Ruslik (talk) 19:42, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
- Look at the "Comment" section of the File History chart here. How do you fix the comment so that it is something more constructive than the information template source code? MPD (t - c - u) 20:00, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
- That's an auto-comment when the file is uploaded. Every normal file has that. It contains the file description page contents, or the beginning of it. I don't think you can provide any other kind of comment for normal uploads. Some API uploads (Commonist, mobile apps) or special cases (cross-wiki uploads, file transfers from wikis) may contain different comments. And to "fix" it I think you would need to upload a new version (you can provide a comment for that) and then ask an admin to delete the original. MKFI (talk) 20:19, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
Done MPD (t - c - u) 20:48, 1 October 2016 (UTC)- ...I didn't intend you to actually do that. The "re-upload and revision delete" was meant as an explanation as to why it would be best to leave it as it is. MKFI (talk) 20:54, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
I realized that the reason the edit summary is mumbo-jumbo compared to most other files is because I was using the old upload form rather than the upload wizard. I'll try to use the latter for future uploads. I have reverted the new version upload, and therefore this entire action is Not done. MPD (t - c - u) 21:37, 1 October 2016 (UTC)- Except I can't revert it because the old and new versions are identical. Let's just have the first revision deleted for this one file, and I'll try to do better for future uploads. MPD (t - c - u) 21:40, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
- A small correction to the comment by MKFI – Special:Upload is actually the only upload tool that inserts a duplicate of file description in the summary (most other tools tend to put their own name in there, e.g. the ubiquitous "User created page with UploadWizard"). @Matthew Peter-Davis: If you want to avoid it, just use any other upload tool. Matma Rex (talk) 14:29, 3 October 2016 (UTC)
- I've tried, but for some strange reason, Special:Upload is the only tool that will accept my images. Others, such as the Upload Wizard, flag them as corrupt and disallows me to proceed. MPD (t - c - u) 18:41, 3 October 2016 (UTC)

Color distortion when thumbnail or in infobox
When I view an image I uploaded as thumbnail (COMMONS File page) or in an infobox (WP article) the upper half of it has adulterated color. It looks fine when I view the source file or when I click on the thumbnail to view full screen. I've tried viewing from two different computer systems (both Windows 7 however) but same result. The file is .jpg and 8.85 MB. Where can I get technical explanation why the color distortion is occurring at thumbnail size and in infobox, and how to correct it? Thank you. PD-CAGov
Natuur12 suggested using Commmons help, back in July 2015 I uploaded an image that came from the City of San Diego and the permission tag for uploading the image that was determined to be the correct one was PD-CAGov (File:San Diego TwinPorts proposal-Ron Roberts 1991.jpg) for the Wikipedia article Cross Border Xpress. I was the founder and main negotiator for the Tijuana cross border terminal from 1986-2006. For the Wiki article, I obtained two more pictures from the City of San Diego to help clarify the "rapid development" of the Ejido Tampico between 2000-2006, and the Sinaloa Cartel drug tunnels dug from and around the Tijuana airport (drug tunnel corridors) into Otay Mesa, San Diego, both subjects of which are covered in the Wiki articled but hard to visualize without images. I used these photos from the City of San Diego (same source as the TwinPorts image already used) as the base images to create two new images to help the reader see the rapid development and the reach of the Sinaloa cartel in and around the Tijuana airport, do I use the same permission tag as used with the File:San Diego TwinPorts proposal-Ron Roberts 1991.jpg i.e. Template:PD-CAGov. The new images are from 2000 and 2006, the descriptors on the two new images images I added to identify landmarks and drug tunnel corridors. Simply would like to make sure I use the correct source and permission tag for the two new uploads i.e. PD-CAGov. Thank you`Rnieders (talk) 03:37, 3 October 2016 (UTC)
- Convenience link: File:San Diego TwinPorts proposal-Ron Roberts 1991.jpg (looks like this needs categories). Only someone who has seen the prior correspondence can work out whether that would be covered by the prior permission filed with OTRS (vs. needing a new additional permission letter), and most of us, even administrators, have no access to OTRS correspondence. You'd have to ask at Commons:OTRS noticeboard, unless there is a case to be made that this is simply public domain based on general California government policies for such images. - Jmabel ! talk 04:04, 3 October 2016 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding SouthSide Comets Logo.jpg

--Hoey906 (talk) 11:11, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
- @Hoey906:
- The link you give in your heading is to a file that has never existed.
- There's more than one Southside Comets in the world. I'm going to guess you mean the one in Edmonton, Alberta, and that we are talking about this logo. That is almost certainly copyrighted, and could not be on Commons without a free license from the copyright holder, with permission sent via COM:OTRS. You aren't likely to get that. Assuming your article will be in the English-language Wikipedia, they have some provision for use of non-free images, which would be uploaded directly into the English-language Wikipedia, not Commons. You would tag it in the English-language Wikipedia using the template en:Template:Non-free logo. - Jmabel ! talk 15:13, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
replacing photo
I tried to replace a photo (on a scholar's page) with a more up-to-date one. The interface gave me technical errors three times and then the system locked me out. Any help? Thanks, Chris — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ethicsblogger (talk • contribs) 14:22, 04 October 2016 (UTC)
- @Ethicsblogger: Could you be more specific? On what page are you trying to make a change? In particular, were you editing an article in Wikipedia, trying to change which image it uses (perfectly legitimate) or trying to overwrite an existing image with a different image (almost never OK except for improved versions of the same image). And if you posted here you are not "locked out": what exactly did you encounter? - Jmabel ! talk 15:17, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Thanks. The page is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_Brennan The photo of Brennan is old and I'm trying to post a newer one. When I tried to upload the photo, the interface gave me a weird technical error, something like, "File name .$ already exists" (and no, that wasn't the name of the photo I was uploading). Next it gave me a LONG error message that looked like 10 lines of computer code. Gibberish to me. Third try, it locked me out from editing that page -- or at least that's what the notification implied. Ethicsblogger ! talk
- @Ethicsblogger: Still not very clear (which upload tool? which page do you mean by "that page"), so let me try to be the one who is specific. (This won't necessarily be the "best" way to do this, but it is probably the least error-prone.) Please try to upload at this linked page. That should result in a file called File:Jason Brennan 02.jpg, which certainly should not conflict with any existing filename. Remember to fill out the file page content appropriately. You can use the content of https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Jason_Brennan_portrait.jpg&action=edit as a model if you are not sure how to do that. Then in the infobox of en:Jason Brennan, change File:Jason_Brennan_portrait.jpg to File:Jason_Brennan_02.jpg. Let me know if anything here is unclear, or if you follow these steps and something fails for you. - Jmabel ! talk 15:34, 5 October 2016 (UTC)

Problems using VicunaUploader 1.23
For the last few days I've been having great difficulties uploading photos with Vicuna and I think the problem may be with Commons. Much of the time it will not log in. Most of the time when I select files, they don't show up in thumbnails (and only the first one shows the size), so they won't upload. Sometimes it only uploads some of the files. Within the last hour I was able to get it to upload a set of three photos. Then I tried to upload a set of 12, but it uploaded only the first one.
Is anyone else having problems like this? Is there a problem with Commons? Bubba73 (talk) 03:09, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
- I don't use that tool, but presumably the thumbnails part is strictly HTML5+Javascript on your computer, which suggests that the problem is in the tool, not in Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 15:44, 6 October 2016 (UTC)

- For copyrighted materials, permission to use in Wikimedia projects is not sufficient. The image must be freely licensed.
- If they are willing to license it, either the rights-holder must email via the COM:OTRS system, or you need to link to somewhere online where the relevant license is granted by the rights-holder (e.g. this is how we usually get images from Flickr). In the later case, when the email is sent, tag the page with OTRS pending.
- However, in this case something else entirely may be going on. The page was tagged because on uploading you made no claim about licensing at all. That is, there is no licensing tag. It is possible (I don't know enough about German copyright law) that this logo is so simple as to be ineligible for copyright, in which case the right tag would be PD-ineligible. You might bring this to Commons:Village pump/Copyright where it is more likely someone would know the threshold of originality for copyright in Germany. - Jmabel ! talk 15:42, 6 October 2016 (UTC)

problem in loading a new version
Good morning,
a month ago I've loaded a graph of solar spectrum. After seeing the effect of texts in medium-little images, I've enhanced the text of graph and created a new image of that file. I tried twice to load the right file as updated version of the file, wikimedia commons load the correct file and show me icon correctly. Unfortunately when I go to see the new version of file, it show me always the old version... I don't know why.. Who knows why ?

What is the overall copyright status?
I had collected some photographs from reliable source and created a banner in Photoshop. I have recently received a deletion message for the same for violation of copyright. The pictures Indian Rhinoceros, Golden Langur, Bihu dancer, elephant, green snake, kamakhya temple, mask of Majuli etc. which are depicting Assam. I re-uploaded the picture and make picture brushing touch. Please help!
Parikhit phukan (talk) 13:52, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
- "Reliable source" has nothing to do with it. The issue is the copyright status of the images you used. Unless these are either in the public domain, free-licensed, or you own the copyrights to the images, you can't do this on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 15:38, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
Hierarchy of Search Results
I posted this on Village Pump, no replies, so maybe this is the right place to ask? :
What is the hierarchy of search returns on a phrase that does not have an exact corresponding category? I would think that the closest category match would be displayed first, or the appropriate redirect if there is one.
For example, one of the categories I am currently editing is "Episcopal Church (United States)". Users might be expected to search the phrase "Episcopal Church". But if you enter "Episcopal Church" in the search box on the Main Page of Wikimedia Commons, and click on results "containing Episcopal Church", the first eleven results describe individual churches. The twelfth result is for the actual words "Episcopal Church" and tells you that "This category is located at Category:Episcopal Church (United States). To get to the category, the user needs to scroll down past the first eleven more particular references to the general reference (ie. the category).
So I guess I am wondering if the default search result is for a file, or the closest category of the phrase entered.

- I think you are expecting it to be smarter than it is. - Jmabel ! talk 18:35, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
So, I take it that it is not a current feature (to show the category before the files of similar name). That's fine, we can't have everything. But do you think that it would be a good thing? I do. How can I suggest this improvement on the search results? Drbones1950 (talk) 20:43, 7 October 2016 (UTC

Uploading a new logo for my company
Hello,
The logo on the page for a company I work for is out of date. I am trying to upload the most recent logo but I keep getting a notice saying Wikimedia commons is unsure if I can upload this and directs me to their upload guide. Any help would be appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ArizonaRose (talk • contribs) 17:01, 06 October 2016 (UTC)
- In order to help you, you're going to need to be more specific about what you are doing and what is happening. Are you trying to overwrite an existing file (generally a no-no, unless it is an improved version of the same image) or upload a new file? What upload tool are you using (Special:UploadWizard? Special:Upload? Some other tool?) Could you quote the precise warning message you are getting, instead of paraphrasing? Can you point us to somewhere online where we can see the logo in question to determine whether it is something we can allow as ineligible for copyright, or whether we will need an email per COM:OTRS to confirm licensing? etc. - Jmabel ! talk 19:01, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
- I'm going to the company's page. I click the "Edit Source" tag. I then click on the embed file icon to upload the new logo. The warning I get is "Something went wrong, We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia Commons." You can visit mfa-inc.com to see the logo. It is on the top left of the website. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ArizonaRose (talk • contribs) 13:25, 07 October 2016 (UTC)
- OK. There are both technical and non-technical issues here. "The company's page" is presumably en:MFA Incorporated (on the English-language Wikipedia). I don't have any experience with "embed file", so I'm simply going to show you how I would approach this (and it probably doesn't involve Commons at all).
- The logo is not in the public domain, so unless the copyright-holder (presumably MFA Incorporated, but possibly the artist) wants to free-license it, which they probably won't, it doesn't belong on Commons. Note that the old logo is at en:File:MFA Incorporated (emblem).png, not on Commons. If you go to that page, you will notice it is under a non-free use rationale, not a license.
- Use en:Special:Upload (on the English-language Wikipedia, not on Commons) to upload a new low-resolution logo with a name along the lines of "MFA Incorporated (emblem 2016).png". Use the content of [:en:File:MFA Incorporated (emblem).png]] as your guide to what you need to say there. That will result in a new file page (e.g. en:File:MFA Incorporated (emblem 2016).png) on the English-language Wikipedia. Then you can simply edit the page en:MFA Incorporated to replace "MFA Incorporated (emblem).png" with "MFA Incorporated (emblem 2016).png" and the new logo will be used. You may have to refresh the cache on your local machine to see it properly.
- Once this is done, en:File:MFA Incorporated (emblem).png should probably be deleted (under English-language Wikipedia policy) as a non-free file that is no longer in user.
- I hope that helps. - Jmabel ! talk 15:35, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
- but I keep getting a notice saying Wikimedia commons is unsure if I can upload this and directs me to their upload guide. This is because of abuse filter 153, which filters cross-wiki uploads. ★ Poké95 03:11, 9 October 2016 (UTC)
- ...which will not happen if the upload is to en-wiki, which is what I suggested doing above. - Jmabel ! talk 16:53, 9 October 2016 (UTC)
Category Redirect
I think that I made a mistake when creating a redirect:
I wanted to redirect searches for Saguaro (cactus) in the state of Arizona to the correct subcat of Carnegiea gigantea. But now a search on the phrase "saguaro in Arizona" returns the answer "there is a page named saguaro in Arizona", and that page direct says "Carnegiea gigantea (redirect Saguaro in Arizona). Click on that and you come to the Carnegiea gigantea gallery page.
What I wanted was to be sent to the page "Carnegiea gigantea in Arizona", a page that is a subcat of Carnegiea gigantea. Can the redirect by corrected? Or is it not possible for a redirect to be that specific? Thanks, Drbones1950 (talk) 17:50, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
- You can't redirect searches. You can only redirect pages. It would help if you would be specific here what pages you are talking about.
- I'm guessing this has something to do with your recent edits to gallery page Carnegiea gigantea, but since in the end your edits there negated each other, I'm not sure what you were up to there.
- If you are trying to change a search result: out of luck. If you are trying to redirect a page: could you be specific about what page you are trying to redirect where? And if you are trying to do something else entirely, I guess I'm not grasping it. - Jmabel ! talk 19:13, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
- Ah, I found Saguaro in arizona (by the way, you should always capitalize names of U.S. states). It's a hard redirect to Carnegiea gigantea, so it becomes, in effect, another name for that gallery page. I still don't get your intent here, though. - Jmabel ! talk 19:25, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
Hi, Jmabel, Thanks for picking up the thread. My intent: when a user types "Saguaro in Arizona", he should receive a page saying that he should go to "Carnegiea gigantea in Arizona" (This would be a soft redirect, right?), or the same phrase could be a hard redirect (as you point out, it is now), but automatically take the user to the page "Carnegiea gigantea in Arizona". So, given that the redirect is now a hard redirect, can the target page be "Carnegiea gigantea in Arizona" instead of the more general "Carnegiea gigantea"? That would be the bottom line of my query. Thanks, Drbones1950 (talk) 15:54, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
- But there is no page Carnegiea gigantea in Arizona. If you want to redirect to a gallery page of that name, first you would have to create a gallery page of that name. - Jmabel ! talk 18:31, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
OK, I really don't mean to be a pain. Perhaps I don't have a clear understanding of the terminology. It seems that you are using page and gallery interchangeably. Is that what "page" actually means in Commons? What I was referring to was the subcategory "Carnegiea gigante in Arizona" in the category "Carnegiea gigantea". Can the redirect bring the user to the specified subcategory (...in Arizona), or just to the category (Carnegeia gigantea)? Hope that is a better explanation. Drbones1950 (talk) 20:38, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
(Clarifying terminology): a gallery is something like this:
-
Caption of some sort
-
Another caption
-
Caption, again
A gallery page or just page is technically like an article in Wikipedia; Commons had these before it ever had categories, but they've fallen somewhat out of use. (Technically, these pages can have more than galleries—see for example Seattle and the Orient—but they mainly consist of galleries.) A file page (often just file or image) has a single image, like File:Carnegiea gigantea (1).jpg. And a category page (often just category) is like the one I now think you meant in the first place, Category:Carnegiea gigantea in Arizona, but when you said 'the page "Carnegiea gigantea in Arizona"' I thought you meant Carnegiea gigantea in Arizona and didn't go looking for Category:Carnegiea gigantea in Arizona. (One of the many reasons to actually link to what you are talking about.)
So: technically, you could make a page Category:Saguaro in Arizona that is a redirect to Category:Carnegiea gigantea in Arizona, but generally this is not encouraged (see Commons:Only use category redirects where necessary, which is not totally up to date, but generally in line with the views most widely shared). If you do think we need this redirect, please make it a soft redirect: in Category:Saguaro in Arizona, put Carnegiea gigantea in Arizona. Russbot will come by daily and move any images that get put there so they end up in the real category. - Jmabel ! talk 22:41, 7 October 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks, that is just what I was looking for. And I will try to supply links to what I am citing as examples. But I do not know HTML. What code would I put in a posting to make the reference a link? Thanks again, Drbones1950 (talk) 01:30, 9 October 2016 (UTC)
- There are two ways to make links:
- Internal links within WMF wikis, made the way I made them above (e.g. :Category:Carnegiea gigantea in Arizona, which produces Category:Carnegiea gigantea in Arizona).
- External links, either the raw URL (e.g. http://www.visitarizona.com/) or a "captioned" link (e.g. this link, which produces this link). - Jmabel ! talk 16:59, 9 October 2016 (UTC)

How do you find categories?
When uploading an image, one is scolded for not including categories, but is not told where to find the categories. After I uploaded a couple of images, I went to the articles in which they're being used, and tried using the categories those articles were in. It worked for one article, but for only two out of four categories for the other article, so it seems like there is not a perfect categories match between WM and WP. I repeat: where can you find the categories as they are acceptably used on wikimedia? Thank you for your attention. Akhooha (talk) 23:56, 9 October 2016 (UTC)
- It can take a little time to get used to the Commons category hierarchy; often just plain doing a search (with "category" as one of the search terms) can help.
- A lot of the time, I find it's easy to come up with a high-level category, then start drilling down. For example, from Category:Churches, drilling down (1) to Category:Churches by name and from there to Category:Churches by patron saint and then to the particular saint after whom the church was named; (2) to Category:Churches by location and then down to the most specific relevant location; (3) similarly via Category:Churches by date and Category:Churches by denomination.
- Also, if I can find another similar image, its categorization is often very suggestive of what might be the relevant categories.
- I hope that helps at least a little. - Jmabel ! talk 06:43, 10 October 2016 (UTC)
- Not much to add to that response, other than to explain why the approach of using categories of [English Wikipedia?] articles in which images may be used doesn't work. The reason is that separate projects have completely separate category trees. There's no guarantee that a category on English Wikipedia or Swahili Wiktionary exists here on Commons. —LX (talk, contribs) 09:35, 10 October 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you. It's too bad there isn't somewhere a centralized list so that one wouldn't have to go through this trial and error method. Thanks for the information. Akhooha (talk) 15:48, 10 October 2016 (UTC)
- When you start from Wikipedia side you can first check if the article has its own Commons category. For example Mainz Cathedral has a side bar link "In other projects" to Wikimedia Commons which takes you to Category:Mainz Cathedral. Most articles do not have that however. If the Wikipedia article does not have a Commons category you could check if any of the Wikipedia categories link to Commons categories. In the Mainz Cathedral example en:Category:Roman Catholic cathedrals in Germany also has a link to Commons. MKFI (talk) 16:45, 10 October 2016 (UTC)

- (Edit conflict) Since Wikipedia (I assume this is about an image used on a Wikipedia page) is a constantly-changing community project, nobody can guarantee that your image will be used permanently on a particular page. You are welcome to upload the image and replace any references to the older image yourself. If the image is much better there's no reason it wouldn't be used for a long time. However, note that uploading your image requires releasing it under a free license that is not revocable (COM:LICENSING). BMacZero (talk) 16:50, 10 October 2016 (UTC)

- I'm afraid permission to use a work on Wikimedia Commons is not sufficient for it to be hosted here. What is needed is permission from the copyright holder to publish the content under a free license (a copyright license that allows anyone to use, modify and distribute the content for any purpose, including commercial purposes). Please see Commons:OTRS for instructions on how to obtain and send in an appropriate permission statement before proceeding. —LX (talk, contribs) 14:21, 11 October 2016 (UTC)
- Once you've dealt with the OTRS/permissions side of this, the source can be "photo by [name of author]" or (as appropriate) "scanned from photo by [name of author]". Some of us prefer that to Self even on our own work.
- Also, when you upload after OTRS email, don't forget to use OTRS pending on the relevant file page. - Jmabel ! talk 15:50, 11 October 2016 (UTC)
Permission on Photographs
How do you let someone know that you want to use their photograph on Wikipedia, and they don't have any contact information, or you don't know their contact information? Bryson483 (talk) 11 October 2016
- If you are talking about a photo already on Commons, then necessarily you can use it on Wikipedia. If you are talking about getting permission to upload a copyrighted photograph to Commons (or Wikipedia) and no free license has been offered, and you don't have any contact information for the rights-holder, and you can't work out where to get that contact information, then you are out of luck. - Jmabel ! talk 20:52, 11 October 2016 (UTC)
Uploading state-owned images

- Generally yes, a permission is required but it depends on which town you mean. Ruslik (talk) 19:33, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you. The town is San Antonio de Areco. So what's the next step? Who should I contact to get the permission? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ευχαριστώ (talk • contribs) 20:23, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
- If there is a version of the coat of arms old enough to be in the public domain, that would be simplest. Otherwise: usually the official blazon of a coat of arms is a verbal description, with any given image being an artist's interpretation of that blazon being subject to the artist's own copyright. So this gets complicated. I suspect you could get better advice at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 22:33, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
Question
I want to upload a picture of a musical duo but i'm not the author of it. So I connected with them via their VERIFIED Facebook page, told them that i've created a Wikipedia article about them and they sent me two pictures to upload for the article. Now before uploading them i wanna know how can i prove that they have really sent me those picture? Is it ok if i record a video during which i'm gonna show you our Facebook messages and then visit their verified page to prove that they gave me the permission to upload them? --Eurofan88 (talk) 22:05, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
- You'll want to follow the steps listed here: Commons:OTRS#If you are NOT the copyright holder. If the photos you have are licensed appropriately for Commons (see Commons:Licensing), then you can upload them and add the template

. Then the copyright holders (the musicians) need to email permissions-commons@wikimedia.org with a statement of permission (the OTRS page I linked has a template they can use for a release of rights), previous correspondence with you, and a link to the image. An OTRS volunteer will make sure everything's in order. Hope that helps. clpo13(talk) 22:22, 12 October 2016 (UTC)- clpo13, unfortunately i don't think they will take time to do all those things, they simply sent me the pictures and told me that i can ulpoad them. PD-US tag
Does the PD-US tag apply retroactively to images made in US territories prior to their incorporation into the US like Guam, Puerto Rico or Hawaii?--KAVEBEAR (talk) 22:09, 8 October 2016 (UTC)
- I would think that in any case 100% of pre-annexation published material from those territories is now public domain, so PD-US-1923 is as good a tag as any. - Jmabel ! talk 17:01, 9 October 2016 (UTC)
- I don't think that Hawaii had any pre-US copyright law and is now firmly part of the US. Guam and Puerto Rico, on the other hand, were presumably part of the Berne Convention by virtue of Spain's adhering to that law. 100% is PD-US, but not necessarily PD-Spain.
- Ultimately, I don't think this has as much to do with the real world as it does with Commons, and I don't think we want to make up problems for ourselves. There may be some place in the world where the origin of the work for the rule of the shorter term might be interpreted to be Spain and not the US, but it's not something I'd stress about. PD-US-1923 should be fine.--Prosfilaes (talk) 13:05, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
How to get an old version of an image deleted
Hi. Assume somebody uploaded a picture he took. Also assume this person doesn't want it known where he took it but forgot to delete the location meta data at first, so he uploaded a new, edit version. How can he get the old version deleted? --Widar23 (talk) 11:01, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
- Upload the new version first. Then any administrator can delete the old version to suppress this information. Note that this is not a "hard delete". Administrators will still be able to see the old version, but others will not. - Jmabel ! talk 15:19, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
Uploading Red Cross symbols
Hello, I wanted to create an English version of the article for the Red Cross of Serbia and i wanted to include an infobox. For it, i'd need a symbol of the Red Cross of Serbia, but there are none uploaded to Commons. Could i upload it from the Red Cross of Serbia website, in the same manner that has been done with Romanian Red Cross logo here. Thanks SRBeen (talk) 20:49, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
- Assuming that their logo is the simple one at http://www.redcross.org.rs/index.php, that would be fine. It is too simple to be eligible for copyright, so the correct "license tag" would be PD-ineligible. - Jmabel ! talk 00:10, 14 October 2016 (UTC)
File:Luise Kaish, Sphere, 1976, Hood Museum, Dartmouth College.jpg
I have permission from Dartmouth College's Hood Museum to use this image, but I couldn't figure out a good way to indicate that when uploading the image. Can you let me know the best way to submit proof of permission to use the image on Wikipedia? - Convenience link: File:Luise Kaish, Sphere, 1976, Hood Museum, Dartmouth College.jpg - Jmabel ! talk 00:08, 14 October 2016 (UTC)
- Assuming that the sculpture is copyrighted, it would presumably be the artist, not the museum, that owns the copyright.
- Your credits seem to be saying that the photo is also by the artist. I have my doubts, because it doesn't look like very professional work.
- "permission... to use this image..." is quite vague, and there is no such license as PD-Dartmouth College, the one you've indicated. What we would need -- both from the artist and from the photographer if those are different people -- is permission to use the photo under a specific free license. That permission needs to come via email, as explained at COM:OTRS. - Jmabel ! talk 00:17, 14 October 2016 (UTC)

- Commons:Fair use is not allowed. Old images may be in public domain by now however. WW1 images published pre-1923 are certainly in public domain. WW2 images may be in public domain depending on the country (UK government crown copyright has expired, US government images are always in public domain, Australian copyright term for photographs has exipred, Finnish copyright term for photographs has expired, the author may have been dead for more than 70 years etc.) See Commons:Copyright rules by territory. Possible deletion of image file: File:Purchase decision model.jpg
Re: File:Purchase decision model.jpg
I have been notified that the above file is about to be deleted and have been asked to provide a source and the name of the book that it was scanned from.
1. It was not scanned from any book. Instead the image was created by me using Photoshop (as stated at the time of upload).\
2. The source for the concepts contained in the diagram was the relevant Wikipage (Consumer Behaviour) - i.e. the headings and sub-headings -organised into logical categories and with an attempt to illustrate the relationship between key concepts.
3. The relevant Wikipage (Consumer Behaviour) formerly had a table (columns and rows) with similar information, but unfortunately the table was corrupted and the column headings and information in the columns was not aligned, with the result that it was potentially misleading. After working on the table for several hours and unable to get it to work correctly, I decided to delete it and replace it with the diagram. So, although many of the ideas are taken from a previous edition of the relevant Wikipage, the way that they are presented is novel.
4. In my humble opinion, the diagram is superior to the previous table in that it demonstrates relationships between key ideas in a manner that cannot be replicated by a simple table.
5. The concepts contained in this diagram are well-known and widely canvassed in a variety of texts. I have come across all of these concepts previously across a 40 year career as a professional marketer and educator. There are no real surprises - but I doubt that these concepts have been organised in precisely this manner in any published work.
Two other images created by me using Photoshop and placed on relevant Wikipages have already been deleted. One of these contain ideas organised in novel ways - but because I went to the trouble of providing a source for the original ideas (not for the diagram), the image was deleted. (The original authors never produced a diagram but simply discussed the concepts, but I combined two different parts of their article in an original way, again with an emphasis on relationships).
What I infer from all this activity is that diagrams can never acceptable, photographs are preferred. If the diagram provides a source, it is deleted immediately. If the diagram does not contain a source, I will be given a request for a source, which presumably will earmark the diagram for deletion just as soon as it is supplied! (I have noticed other diagrams on Wiki pages. How ever do they get them through the net??????)
What about if I used post-it notes to write these ideas out by hand and carefully arranged them on an interesting background, and then took a photo of them? Would that be acceptable?
BronHiggs (talk) 20:58, 17 October 2016 (UTC)
- @BronHiggs: I'm not sure why you posted this on the Help desk, since you don't seem to be asking for any assistance.
- @BronHiggs: You can always turn any sort of speedy delete into a regular deletion review discussion. I'm guessing you didn't know how to do that. Would you like me to do that for you?
- @Ellin Beltz: You tagged this; offhand, I don't see any problem with the user's statement that it is the user's own work. Any actual issue here? If you did this in error, you can just remove the tag and we wouldn't need a DR. - Jmabel ! talk 23:25, 17 October 2016 (UTC)
Need Guidance on Copyright
I really need guidance on developing images using Photoshop.
I have heaps of ideas for diagrams and flowcharts that help to explain concepts. But it takes hours to produce this sort of material, but I wonder if there is really any point if the diagrams are just going to be deleted after I finish them and upload them.
So my original question was: "What about if I draw the ideas on blank paper, and than take a photo of them?" Would that be more acceptable than a diagram worked up in Photoshop.
BronHiggs (talk) 00:12, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
BTW I am relatively new to Wikipedia, and have no idea what you are talking about most of the time — Preceding unsigned comment added by BronHiggs (talk • contribs) 00:13, 18 October 2016 (UTC) e.g. I do not know what is meant by "turn any sort of speedy delete into a regular deletion review discussion"
- There is nothing wrong with using Photoshop (or pretty much any other tool) to develop a diagram. In general, that would be preferable to a hand-drawn image.
- The fact that someone proposed your image for deletion does not necessarily mean it will be deleted. As I said above, I think she's wrong in this case. Given that you apparently don't understand the procedures, I'll take this in hand myself and follow the usual process. You'll probably see a note on your talk page that I've proposed the image for deletion. That doesn't mean I want it deleted, it means I'm setting up a proper place to discuss Ellin's request for deletion instead of just having it proceed. - Jmabel ! talk 02:15, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

uploading self created images
In trying to upload, a wholly self owned image (original digital painting jpg.) on the wikipedia "treehouse" editorial help page, the upload field rejected the image as not sufficiently clear of copywrite complications. To wit: the program could not verify CC. standing. Is there some way around this techno-bureaucratic obstacle? I know I have full rights of exercising waiver for my own work, and know WM accepts original work. Perhaps it is mere a formatting problem, in which case, could you direct me to your "criteria for uploading images" page? ThanksBjhodge8 (talk) 03:47, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
- Could you be more specific about what happened? You say you were trying to upload on a Wikipedia page, but you are asking this on Commons. How were you trying to upload (with Commons' Upload Wizard, or with some other tool? There are quite a few). It doesn't make sense to say "the program could not verify CC. standing" because the program has no way to know the standing of a license, it just takes the license you state. So what you've written doesn't make sense, and you'll need to be more specific about what you did on what page (presuming you used a web-based tool, otherwise what software), and just what message it gave you. - Jmabel ! talk 05:11, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
- You seem to have successfully uploaded File:E-Knowledgement.jpg, so I have no idea why you would be having trouble uploading something else. That image, though, lacks categories (which you should add, as appropriate) and I'm not certain it is in scope. If you just intended this as one of a small number of images for your user page it would be allowed for that purpose, but only if you actually use it there. - Jmabel ! talk 05:16, 24 October 2016 (UTC)

Second-Hand Permission
An amateur photographer friend has given me some digital images with permission to upload and categorize. What is the best way to indicate release and attribution? Drbones1950 (talk) 18:24, 26 October 2016 (UTC)

- Your friend's email per COM:OTRS can authorize you to upload on their behalf (rather than listing specific images), but probably should also contain an explicit statement of what license they intend for their images. Once that email is sent, when you upload images, give that photographer's name (or however they wish to be attributed) as the author, and mark any such uploads with OTRS pending until such time as you have a specific OTRS number to mark them with. - Jmabel ! talk 23:25, 26 October 2016 (UTC)

- This looks like a problem specific to this file, and won't be solved by reuploading. I can reproduce this on my local testing wiki too. I'll look into it. Matma Rex (talk) 00:28, 19 October 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks. Any help would be appreciated. I'm not sure why it's doing this. I've uploaded numerous files here before, but I have been rather inactive as of late. Has something changed? I'm not doing anything different on my end. Any suggestions would also be helpful. Heironymous Rowe (talk) 02:30, 19 October 2016 (UTC)
- That image has a quite complicated EXIF info generated by photoshop. Our image thumbnailer has had problems with similar images in the past. MKFI (talk) 06:38, 19 October 2016 (UTC)
- @Heironymous Rowe: Thumbnail generation was failing because MediaWiki fails to read the width and height of the image. (And we need to know the original dimensions to thumbnail the file proportionally.) The file is technically not a valid JPEG file, it contains some garbage data between the JPEG sections (which include e.g. EXIF metadata, or the actual image data; see w:JPEG#Syntax_and_structure); it seems that most image viewers and browsers simply ignore it and display the file, but both MediaWiki's metadata extractor and PHP's getimagesize() function are strict and treat this as an invalid file. I've already submitted a patch for MediaWiki, I'll probably work on one for PHP too.
- @MKFI: Do you have any examples of other affected files? It would be helpful to determine the priority of this issue (is it just one file out of 30 million, or is it a common issue?).
- (The file was replaced with a different version that doesn't have the problem, but you can still see it with the old versions.) Matma Rex (talk) 02:04, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks. Problem seems to be resolved, as I uploaded several files today with no problems what so ever. I'm not sure why those files glitched, I didn't do anything differently with them than the others. Heironymous Rowe (talk) 05:03, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
- @Matma Rex: one example from 2013: File:Waterfall in Tivoli, by Johann Martin von Rohden (1778 - 1868).jpg. Not very common issue to my knowledge. MKFI (talk) 06:48, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
- I looked into it and this is already fixed in PHP, so I just had to port the patch to HHVM. This will be resolved for all images when they get around to merging the patch, and we get around to upgrading out version of HHVM. This might take a couple weeks, but it'll eventually happen :) Matma Rex (talk) 23:31, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

How to use Cat-a-lot
Hello,
Somewhere I saw directions for using Cat-a-lot, but now I can't find them. Is there a help page for using it? I just used it and it moved only two images and said there was no category for the others, though all were going to the same cat. What am I doing wrong?

- The section of the linked article "Moving files between categories, and removing files from a category" describes that in detail. If there is something unclear there, I suggest you use its talk page to ask about it, since any required clarification probably belongs in the article. - Jmabel ! talk 15:34, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

page removed by editor
Dear colleague,
I edited the page "European Master's in Translation ", and included two pictures. I work for the European Commission, the pictures are the property of the European Commission, and it is my task to update this page. Now the pictures have been removed, and the page has reverted to its old, outdated and incorrect version.
Its history says:
03:50, 2 September 2016 CommonsDelinker (talk | contribs) . . (4,932 bytes) (-69) . . (Removing "Wheel_of_Competences.jpg", it has been deleted from Commons by Magog the Ogre because: Copyright violation, see c:Commons:Licensing.) (undo)

Can you help me to correct this, because it is not clear to me what I should do.
Thank you.

- Given that you say "I work for the European Commission", have you seen en:Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure?
- In terms of uploading an image whose copyright is owned by a third party (even as an employee of the EC, you are considered a separate party from the EC) there are two possibilities. Assuming the EC owns the copyright, you can (1) indicate the relevant free license on a site clearly controlled by the EC (its own site or, for example, if it has an official Flickr photostream) or (2) follow the procedure laid out at COM:OTRS.
- At this point, for images that have already been undeleted, you might first try working with the deleting admin, but if there are any difficulties there, go to Commons:Undeletion requests. - Jmabel ! talk 15:41, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
Upload problem
Hello I had just uploaded many photos today, like the latest File:09862jfBarangays Paseo del Congreso Barasoain Malolos Cityfvf 19.jpg[, however, just an hour, the Upload wizzard turn red and says DSCN9023.JPG The server responded with an invalid JSON document. This could be a problem with the API, or you could be using a proxy server that prevents you from uploading files. Images were removed saying they were of derivative work. Can this be explained better of how they are and of what album? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hallow88 (talk • contribs) 01:48, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
- @Hallow88: Hello, that image was deleted since it is a derivative work of non-free material (which is the album cover). See COM:DW. A derivative work of a non-free material is non-free, and we don't accept non-free images (see COM:L). If you want this image to be restored, OTRS permission is needed from the copyright holder of the album, which is very unlikely in this case (since they use the album cover for profit, and making the album cover free would be a great loss for them). - The problem is that the uploader ran into Special:AbuseFilter/156. Saving and uploading the diagram in a format more suitable for diagrams, such as SVG or PNG, should avoid the problem. —LX (talk, contribs) 17:58, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

- BBT SE, Du solltest dir unbedingt de:Vorlage:Graph:Chart ansehen! - Signing your posts is required on talk pages and it is a Commons policy to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Thank you.
How to delete my own images?
I uploaded a few images and would like to delete them? How can I do so? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Uzman1243 (talk • contribs)
- In general, you can't, unless they were very recently uploaded (a few days) or you go through the same process to delete them for a specific reason that anyone else could initiate. Typically, when you upload photos here, you grant an irrevocable license as part of the process. "Irrevocable" means just that: you can't take it back. - Jmabel ! talk 05:03, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
Mass category removal from files
The task is to:
- find some files via search,
- then remove a specified category from those files.
Unfortunately, Gadget-Cat-a-lot can't remove a category from files, when you're on any page, except from that category page.
Are there any other similar helpful tools? --Djadjko (talk) 03:40, 23 October 2016 (UTC)
- You can install and use Visual File Change. — SMUconlaw (talk) 11:28, 23 October 2016 (UTC)
- Not exactly what I want, but it does work (e. g., you can remove a "Sample category" from a group of files, by executing it in "custom replace" mode and specifying to replace "" with empty string). --Djadjko (talk) 22:28, 24 October 2016 (UTC)

How to define "permission"
Unfortunately, I cannot understand what to write after the word "permisson" here:
|Source =Own work |Author =IvanSt25 |Date =2012.11.21 |Permission =
??? The situation: I have all rights to use the photo and I have a permission from the person to use it here.
And which tag should I use in case I'm ready to release all the rights?
Thank you!
IvanSt25 (talk) 11:17, 23 October 2016 (UTC)IvanSt25
- What are exactly "all rights" that you got? Ruslik (talk) 19:49, 23 October 2016 (UTC)
- I have a feeling there is some confusion here. If it's really your "own work", then you are the copyright holder and there isn't a matter of getting permission. So when you say "I have a permission from the person" do you mean someone else was the photographer, or are you just talking about the permission of the subject of the photo?
- Permission "to use it here" doesn't count for much. Commons only hosts photos which are either in the public domain or which are free-licensed. If you are the photographer, you need to grant such a license as part of the upload (typically , but there are others); if not, we need the rights-holder (typically the photographer) to send email as explained at COM:OTRS, granting a specific license. In addition to sending to COM:OTRS, you should indicate that same license on upload, and should tag the image with OTRS pending because the permission via OTRS usually takes some time to process. - Jmabel ! talk 05:01, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
Re: Illegal action of Mr.Christian Ferrer
Image StanimirBelomazhevESOC2016.png is OWNERSHIP of Mr.Stanimir Belomazhev on which personal page it is uploaded with his personal permit
IT is illegal some one like Mr. Christian Ferrer to insult me with message "StanimirBelomazhevESOC2016.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. " without having any clear prove for that.
HOW person - Christian Ferrer defined that there is copyright violation? What kind of proves he can apply for this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by JordanVarna (talk • contribs) 12:57, 25 October 2016 (UTC)
- Convenience link: File:StanimirBelomazhevESOC2016.png.
- No, it's not illegal to say something is a copyright violation. Indeed, even if he was wrong in saying so, it isn't illegal for him to say this, at least under any law I've ever heard of. Do you have some specific law in mind, or are you just blowing off steam? - Jmabel ! talk 16:14, 25 October 2016 (UTC)
- @Christian Ferrer: - Jmabel ! talk 16:14, 25 October 2016 (UTC)
- @JordanVarna: If you yourself say Stanimir Belomazhev owns the image, how can you then claim it as your own work? Also, if he's the person in the photo, even the claim that he owns the rights seems pretty doubtful to me: the rights would normally belong to the photographer, unless the photo is work for hire. - Jmabel ! talk 16:19, 25 October 2016 (UTC)
- This image have been previously published in several places, e.g. here. If one upload an artwork previously published, a free source must be provided (link to the web page), or a permission from the copyright owner must be send to OTRS. This is our policies. Christian Ferrer (talk) 16:53, 25 October 2016 (UTC)
- According to the upload log, you claimed that you are the author. You also say that it is ESOC 2016, but actually it was posted by Stanimir Belomazhev on his facebook page in 2013. It is unlikely that he would have given you the photo with false information. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:38, 25 October 2016 (UTC)
City seals
What are the guidelines for uploading a .svg city seal, if it was made avaliable for download in a city's website? Are these files allowed? YuriNikolai (talk) 23:59, 25 October 2016 (UTC)
- Typically, no, unless the image is old enough to be public domain. City seals are copyrighted just like any other artwork. "Available for download" has nothing to do with it: most content on the Internet is not free-licensed. - Jmabel ! talk 04:51, 26 October 2016 (UTC)
Question regarding reuse the picture
Hi There,
I would want to use below image as logo of my company. Kindly advise if I am permitted to do so OR please provide me author's contact number so that I can discuss obtaining needed permission.
File:Flame from a Burning Candle.JPG
Author: MarcusObal
Thanks, Plaban Mohapatra plaban.mohapatra@gmail.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by PLABANM (talk • contribs) 06:14, 26 October 2016 (UTC)
- Since the image is dual-licensed under the GFDL and Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike, you are free to reuse it using either license. However, in keeping with the terms of the license, you must attribute the author by providing their name and a link
back to the image pageto the appropriate license (possibly in a credits/acknowledgement page on your website) as well as noting any modifications you have made to the image. You must also license any derivatives of the image, such as your logo, under the same terms (for the Creative Commons license, you can also choose a compatible license). You could attempt to contact MarcusObal by leaving a message on their user talk page but they haven't edited here since 2009, so it's not likely they'll respond. Hope that helps. clpo13(talk) 15:28, 26 October 2016 (UTC)
- Certainly the CC license is easier than GFDL, but I doubt that for a company logo you would want to have to attribute the work to Marcus every time you use it, and link to (or reproduce) the relevant license. Contrary to Clpo13, you don't have to link back to the image page, but you do have to name and link to the license.
- Since Marcus hasn't been active in years and did not provide us with an email address, your chance of contacting him is slim. I think you would do far better to pay a competent photographer to create a similar image of flame. - Jmabel ! talk 15:38, 26 October 2016 (UTC)
- Oops, you're right. I mistook "link to the license" for linking to the image. clpo13(talk) 15:40, 26 October 2016 (UTC)

How do I upload a company logo file?
All the wiki guides loop in circles. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AnahitaT (talk • contribs) 16:34, 26 October 2016 (UTC)
- As far as actually uploadng the image, you do it the same way as any other image, with the "Upload file" link in the left bar. But read Commons:Guidance for paid editors for some important points to understand before doing so. BMacZero (talk) 17:08, 26 October 2016 (UTC)
- If you do not represent the company, you cannot upload the image unless they allow it. BMacZero (talk) 17:09, 26 October 2016 (UTC)
- NOTE that like any other image, it can be on Commons only if it is either in the public domain or is available under a free license. If it is not in the public domain, then you will almost certainly need to go through the process described at COM:OTRS of the rights-owner sending an email to verify the grant of a license. This is true even if you represent the company: we need that email (typically coming from a domain associated with the company) or we have no way to know that the company is actually allowing their logo to be free-licensed. - Jmabel ! talk 23:21, 26 October 2016 (UTC)
Upload wizard page empty after Firefogg installation
Hi, after having Firefogg installed as recommended, the upload wizard page is displayed empty and no longer functional . No forms, no button to select local files, plain empty except the page header. My browser is FF 49.2.
Desinstallation of Firefogg restores the Upload wizard page's functionality - but then I am missing of course the conversion functionality. Regards, --Burkhard (talk) 19:23, 24 October 2016 (UTC)

- @Drahkrub: No, I only have that version installed at the moment.
- It would be useful if you could upload somewhere a screenshot of the broken page. Sometimes the specific way in which something glitches out can indicate the underlying problem.
- Open the browser console (Ctrl+Shift+K), then refresh the page, and copy any errors that appear. UploadWizard is supposed to have logging for them, but it's not impossible that it's also failing.
- After you try again, say at what time it was, so that I can check our error logs for that time range more carefully. (I briefly checked error logs for 24 October, but nothing seemed obviously relevant to Firefogg.)

Wikipedia page Novem Car Interior Design
Dear Admin
I would like to upload a png data on the Wikipedia page Novem Car Interior Design. The png shows our new logo (relaunch). - First some side remarks, hence in smaller font: Heidi, please sign your posts with 4 tildes (~), these will automatically be replaced with your name and posting date; as a divider add two dashes before, all together:
--~~~~
. And not only admins are active here, for instance I am simple user. - Service link: de:Novem Car Interior Design.
- How did you try to upload: Directly from de.wiki while editing with the default Visual Editor or with the Upload Wizard here (link Special:UploadWizard? Did you try to upload this as a new file or as update of File:Novem Car Interior Design Logo.svg? The latter can not work because of the different file types. But most important: It is not enough to have the copyright information in the metadata of the file, you must add them explicitly into the file description, and you must use an appropriate license, see Commons:Licensing (you can switch there to the Geman version).

Uploading Images. my IP address is blocked
Hello. I am needing help. I have been blocked from uploading images to my clients wikipedia page that has been continuously removed even though I have provided two written letters with permission from both the subject and myself.

My Page and Edition
Hey Wikipedia, i can't upload a Image/Media into a Page in the Irish-language Wikipedia which i created, whats it's happening ? I Wish you send me a Answer, thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nerd1853 (talk • contribs) 22:48, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
- Seems you ran into an filter of Crosswiki upload. Upload the file directly on Commons instead (yes, you are not on Wikipedia, but on Commons here, and that’s different from Wikipedia), but before doing this think of the following: Was the media made by you? If not, take care, that the license is really free, cf. COM:Licensing, and add proper attributions of author/s and source. — Speravir_Talk – 00:40, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
File move from file history
Sometimes a file history (on a File: page) contains some significally distinct "versions", that are worth moving into new separate pages.
- Should they be downloaded and reuploaded manually, or maybe there is some automatic moving tool?
- Would those "automatically moved" original file revisions stay in the original file history (i. e., it's not a move, but a copy), or could they be moved out of the original history automatically (i. e., it's really a move or renaming)? --Djadjko (talk) 00:01, 14 October 2016 (UTC)
- No overall answer, but keep in mind that often when this happens, if the uploaders differ, the license granted is pretty dubious for any but the first image uploaded. - Jmabel ! talk 00:43, 14 October 2016 (UTC)
- From this point of view, the simplest solution turns out to be asking the mistaken uploader to manually reupload their file, followed by reverting the original affected file :) --Djadjko (talk) 23:35, 22 October 2016 (UTC)

Upload error 'The server responded with an invalid JSON document'
Hi, I'm using the upload wizard to frequently upload batches of 5-15 images, each JPG usually 1 to 9 MB in size. One of the errors I get most frequently (at least once during each upload bout) is:
The server responded with an invalid JSON document. This could be a problem with the API, or you could be using a proxy server that prevents you from uploading files.
Clicking the "retry failed uploads" button sometimes works and it successfully uploads the file(s), but occasionally it fails and I have to try some other time. There seems to be nothing wrong with the files, and I am not using a proxy server; but my internet connection tends to be a bit slow at times. Has anyone had a similar problem? Is there a workaround? It is really annoying to get this failure/error message after 5-15 minutes of trying to upload files. Thanks. Shankar Raman (talk) 12:54, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
- If it's a problem with your internet connection, then I don't think there's much we could do. But UploadWizard should probably detect this error condition better, and maybe retry a couple of times if it happens. I can reproduce the problem myself (steps: load Special:UploadWizard, turn off your WiFi/disconnect, try uploading a file, observe the silly error). Matma Rex (talk) 13:46, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, a 'retrying again' message or an error message that indicates 'slow or lost internet connection' would be more helpful than this incomprehensible error. The error does not appear only when connection is lost though, in a batch of 10 images being uploaded, say, 6 or 7 may get uploaded, while for the other 3 (a random 3, not the first or last in the list), this error appears, thus suggesting that this happens even on an open, working internet connection. Shankar Raman (talk) 13:56, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
- In that case, I suspect your connection was momentarily lost when uploading one image, and regained before UW started to upload another. UW won't stop uploading after the first error, since in most cases errors only affect single images (e.g. an upload blocked by AbuseFilter); I think the only case we currently have when we'll abort all uploads is when the user hits the upload rate limit (which is something ridiculous like 1000 images per hour, and administrators are exempt, so hardly anyone ever hits it). Matma Rex (talk) 18:15, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
- In that case, as you suggest, if UW could try a couple of times and report an error that is clearer, specific, and more understandable, it would help I guess. Thanks for the clarification and your attention. Shankar Raman (talk) 04:42, 29 October 2016 (UTC)

Delete Robiabo.jpg
I added this photo by mistake. Can anyone delete it from Wikimedia Commons? --Monsterofain (talk) 14:15, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
- Done @Monsterofain: See COM:CSD for a better way to make such requests... deleted as 'uploader requested deletion of a recently uploaded unused file', fyi. Reventtalk 15:14, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
Army insignia, not in use but not very old
Hello everybody. I took photos of some Greek army insignia from an official army magazine, about 40-50 years old. These insignia are not used any more, they are history. Can I upload them? Thanks for the answer. --Skylax30 (talk) 18:57, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
- Whether they are in use or not has no bearing. The issue is their copyright status. If they are considered 3-dimensional, the copyright status of the photo itself would also be important. I think you might do better to ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 23:29, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
thanks. Certainly it is not 3-dimensional. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Skylax30 (talk • contribs) 11:55, 29 October 2016 (UTC)
Image requests
It seems to me that I've seen a template for requesting that more images be added to a category, but I can't find it on the template lists. Am I right? If so, what is it? WQUlrich (talk) 21:30, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
- There is Populate category template but it is for a bot only. Ruslik (talk) 18:08, 29 October 2016 (UTC)
Is my image being used without permission?
I got an e-mail informing me that this image, which I had taken myself of a Finnish police car with permission from the police, is being used without permission on the website of the Finnish magazine Hymy:
- http://hymy.fi/uutiset/keskusrikospoliisi-julkaisi-erikoisen-tiedotteen-tiedatko-missa/
- http://hymy.fi/uutiset/nakojaan-kelpaa-varkaille-tamakin-jamijarvella/
- http://hymy.fi/uutiset/huittislainen-harjavaltalainen-kohtasivat-poliisi-valiin-mahtunut-maakunnan-suurin-sanomalehtikaan/
First, is this use without permission or not? Is it acceptable or not?
Second, if it's without permission and unacceptable, what can I do about it? JIP (talk) 09:38, 29 October 2016 (UTC)
- @JIP: Hello, the website don't need to ask permission from you to use your image, since you already gave anyone permission to use your photos for any purpose, as long as they attribute you. However, the website didn't attributed you and they violated your copyright (and maybe it is unintended). If you care about your copyright, you should email them, saying that they must attribute you. If they didn't do so, you may make legal actions against them, since you are the copyright holder. Please note that I am not a lawyer, so I cannot give you some legal advice. This is just based on my decent understanding. Thanks, ★ Poké95 11:42, 29 October 2016 (UTC)
- Also, add the Published template to File talk:Helsinki police car.jpg with an indication that the use was not legal.
- In my experience, most web sites will correct the matter pretty quickly if you drop them a note. If they don't, then it's time to threaten legal action. - Jmabel ! talk 16:06, 29 October 2016 (UTC)
Pictures
Hello, I was wondering if there are other websites beside Flickr where I can find "Creative Commons" images of people (in particular, tennis players). I am trying to find pictures of Stefanie Vögele from 2016 to put on Wikipedia. On flickr, I contacted Jimmie48 Tennis Photography and @Elisse Tennis to use Stefanie Vögele 2016 photos for Wikipedia, but they have not responded. So what other website should I use? How to upload a Picture - PHOTOGRAPH which I can then add to a biog on Wikipedia
I understand that I need to upload a photo onto WikiCommons, so that then I can upload it on to a biog on Wikipedia. Is that right? So HOW CAN I UPLOAD ON WIKICOMMONS?! Can't find any instructions on this. Please, help Galya galstaykova@abv.bg — Preceding unsigned comment added by GalSI (talk • contribs) 19:19, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
- You can use Special:UploadWizard. It has all instructions. Ruslik (talk) 19:46, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
Uploading a picture onto the Wikimedia page
I have uploaded the picture on Commons, and copied the Link as it showed. However, when I went to the Wikipedia page, which I had created and pasted the Link, it remained as a Link, but never showed as a picture! Please, instruct me as to how to get it as is - as a picture? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 95.43.31.97 (talk) 20:58, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
- It would sure help if you would say what Wikipedia page you are talking about. There is no edit on any Wikipedia attributed to this IP address, so I'm guessing you were logged in there, but have no way to work out under what name so I can't search it out. - Jmabel ! talk 23:59, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
Need help undoing a collection of edits
I made a mistake using Cat-a-lot. I selected all these files, and removed Category:Pioneer Courthouse. I had intended to leave that category, and add Category:Floor plans. I don't know of a way to undo this without clicking through each file. Any ideas? -Pete F (talk) 20:51, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
- Offhand, no, and judging by the silence no one else seems to have any either. I'll deal with it. Please try to be more careful in the future. - Jmabel ! talk 18:26, 31 October 2016 (UTC)
- @Peteforsyth: Category:Pioneer Courthouse restored to all of them by hand. Offhand, some of these look to me to be elevation drawings rather than floor plans, so I didn't mess with that aspect: back to you. - Jmabel ! talk 18:46, 31 October 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks Jmabel, I appreciate it -- and I would have fixed it myself, you didn't have to take that on! But thank you for doing so. And yes, I'll take a closer look before labeling them all as floor plans. -Pete F (talk) 19:51, 31 October 2016 (UTC)
Upload images to my Wiki page
Hello Wikipedia and Administer of Wikipedia, i have created a Article in the Irish Wikipedia about Black people, Daoine gorma in the Irish Gaelic language, and i can't upload a Image in my Wiki page about Black people, How can i upload a Image to my Wikipage ? If you can send me an answer about it, thanks very much, these are some of the Images i wanted to Images that i wanted to upload in my Wikipage, i were wondering if these Images are not allowed by Commons to be uploaded to my Page or if are of Public Domain, etc. Some of the conditions you said in Commons for upload a Image in a Wikipage, anyway, the links of some of two of the Images that i wanted to upload to my page, Image 1, taken from Finnish Wikpedia - https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/8e/Meyers_b1_s0148d.jpg/320px-Meyers_b1_s0148d.jpg, image 2, about Notable Black people, taken from Simple English Wikipedia - https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7d/AfricanAmericans.jpg/220px-AfricanAmericans.jpg, i hope i get a Answer about this, and also the link of the Irish-language Wikipedia Page which i created - https://ga.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daoine_gorma, i hope i get a Answer about It, thanks very much — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nerd1853 (talk • contribs) 16:46, 31 October 2016 (UTC)
- Don't include the size you want in the wikitext, e.g. 220px|mion|Cáiliúil Daoine gorma was wrong, I corrected your mistake in the article with "mion|Cáiliúil Daoine gorma". Also in the file page on Wikimedia Commons, e.g. File:AfricanAmericans.jpg, you have a link "W:Use this file", that give you the text/code to copy and paste.
