Category names of women after marriage

Should an existing category be renamed after a woman changes her name to her husband's name or should her category remain at her mother's name ? Can we have a redirect from the old category name to the new name ? Commons:Categories does not tell anything about that. Example: Should Category:Sarah Engels be renamed to Category:Sarah Lombardi ? - Juergen 5.146.93.20 20:40, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

Much of the time, we follow the en:wp article title (in this case, en:Sarah Engels) when determining the name for the category, and I don't see why we should generally do otherwise for married women. In this case, before changing anything, I'd say that we should check: is Sarah still going by her maiden name, or is she using her married name? And finally, if one of the names is obscure, there's no need to use {{Category redirect}}, but if both names are well known, this would be an ideal situation for a redirect. Family member uploading photos commissioned by a deceased artist as publicity photos

I am the son of a well-known artist who died in 2004. In the artist's "nachlass" are several professional, quality images of her work, photos made for her. They are not under copyright. Her galleries have used several as publicity photos supplied to reporters or critics, who then published the photos with their reviews. I want to upload several of these photos to the Commons as a resource for a planned brief entry on the artist in Wikipedia. No, unless it is made clear that the photos are free. "They are not under copyright" is a bold statement that should be supported by a rationale based on the law. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:55, 1 August 2016 (UTC)

More specifically, in any country that is a signatory to the Berne Convention—which is to say, almost every country in the world—artwork is inherently copyrighted at time of creation, and continues to be copyrighted for a number of years after the artist's death. That number varies from country to country, but if the artist died in 2004, there is no country I'm aware of where we would be even within a decade of when the copyright would expire. On the artist's death, any copyrights that had not been explicitly assigned by the artist's will or other written document would typically pass with the bulk of the estate. If you are the artist's son, then their is a fair chance you might be heir to these rights, but should certainly consult a lawyer if you are not sure about that. It is very unlikely that the works are "not under copyright"; the question is who owns the copyright. Once you sort that out, if you are indeed the owner of the copyright, you can send us an email as described at COM:OTRS and can upload with an appropriate license tag (e.g. {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}. - Jmabel ! talk 19:14, 1 August 2016 (UTC)

Some of the photos are stamped on the back, "Please credit [name of photographer]." They were clearly made for hire for the unrestricted use of the artist. Am I correct that in that circumstance, if there is any copyright, it is held by the artist who hired the photographer? The request for credit is simply that, a request. It's probably not correct, but it's impossible to answer a theoretical question without knowing some facts, including the country of origin of the artworks and of the photographs, and the contractual arrangements that existed between the artist and the photographer(s). Without knowing the facts, my first answer is pretty much all that can be said to be applicable to any situation. Your use of the word "nachlass" might lead one to assume that the country might be Germany or another European country. In most countries, the copyright is owned by the photographer, not by the person who hired a freelance photographer, unless there is an explicit arrangement between them, in a contract, to depart from that rule. In some countries, there's an exception where an employer can own the copyright on the work of an employee made in the course of the employment. A significant number of the photographs, including three-dimensional works, have been published in major newspapers and the publications of major organizations, in no case with either photographer credit or copyright notice. The "no copyright" thing about photographic reproductions of 2-D artworks is only in the United States and some countries. In other countries, there may be a copyright. The situation is that Commons accepts to host the reproductions, but tags them with a warning telling readers that it may not be possible to use those reproductions in some countries, including Germany, without the permission of the photographer. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:24, 1 August 2016 (UTC)

I suppose the Indian organizing team didn't quite manage to finish before that deadline, but I would wait a few days before contacting them. Date template

A few years back, before I became aware of the {{Taken on}} template, I used things like {{date|2012-03-30}} a lot. Back then it worked more or less as you'd expect; now, as I just noticed it doesn't: date ends up blank. If this is considered a bug in {{Date}}, fine, let's fix it. If not, and that is now retroactively considered incorrect use of {{Date}}, is there some more systematic way for me to fix this than VFC? I just did fix a few dozen, but I suspect thousands of files are involved, and VFC is way too tedious for that size job. - Jmabel ! talk 19:48, 2 August 2016 (UTC)

(redacting myself) After actually looking at it, what I just said was wrong... it's {{ISOdate}} that takes dates in that format, {{Date}} takes the parts as separate parameters.... if it used to accept them in the ISO format, it looks like it was very very long ago... the docs from 2009 don't mention it working that way. I know I'm not answering your question, but just giving you some hope that the number of files to fix may not be too large. I've been looking quickly at a few samples of your uploads from between 2009-2016 and, as far as I can tell, it seems that it was during a relatively short period, from 11 March 2012 to 22 April 2012, that you used the template "Date" (with your own files) in the manner you explained above. Before and after that period, you were writing the date normally (without template) in the date field. You started using the template "Taken on" around mid-March 2016. Of course, I may have missed some other strings in the months that I did not sample, but I'm guessing not because your date formatting seems consistent through the years, except for the one period mentioned. The affected period in March and April 2012 seems to include some 800 uploads. If nobody finds an easier way to fix the files, if you want I can volunteer to help a little with manually fixing the files. For example, I could start at 22 April 2012 and from there work in reverse chronological order, while you could start circa 11 March 2012 and work in chronological order. Given that there's no particular reason to hurry, I could fix a few files from time to time when I'm bored with whatever else I'm doing. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:44, 3 August 2016 (UTC)

Album Cover Arts

Hello, I have a question about uploading pictures of album cover arts. Recently I uploaded an album cover art of Marshmello's album Joytime but it was removed because of copyright. If that picture was removed then how come all the other album cover arts from other musicians are not removed? Rizhopper: You haven't given any examples of which "all the other album cover arts from other musicians" are, but I'm going to hazard a guess that you're referring to non-free album covers that you found not on this site (Wikimedia Commons), but locally hosted on English Wikipedia under a fair use rationale for a specific context. Commons, being a general purpose media repository, by definition has no context, so fair use does not apply here. Any album covers actually hosted here need explicit written approval from the copyright holder to publish the covers under terms that allow anyone to use, modify and redistribute them for any purpose, including commercial purposes. —LX (talk, contribs) 08:11, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

Filtering Recent changes for specific words?

I know how to filter Recent changes for only changes to categories, most of which are new pages. Is there a way, though, to filter so that only certain words show up? Specifically, I'd love to see only new categories including the current year. My hope is that, if the category has a date in the name, it might be newsworthy, and thus might work as easy content for Wikinews. Is there a way? • @Nick Moreau: Is not part of current functionality, AFAIK. Might be able to coax something from API however (see:mw:API:Main page); have not messed with it in ages so not sure (anyone can advise?). Could also do client-side filtering of results but usually don't get more than a few days when setting a larger limit=; Wikinews struggles with being timely as is, so not sure if helpful. In theory does not seem difficult to develop. Getting it implemented in a production environment is another matter entirely... --dsprc ^(talk) 07:40, 7 August 2016 (UTC)

Copyright Help with Image from the World Bank Group

Hello,

I attempted to upload an image owned by the World Bank, however I encountered difficulties. The page from which I retrieved the image encourages such use as long as the Group is cited and photographer is names. I attempted to add the image but it was deleted by a bot. I am sure there is a way to do this properly but it's not immediately obvious.

The image in question was taken in 1986 and lacks the copyright symbol that every other image has on the page, so I was under the impression it was alright to use. In addition the image doesn't include the name of the photographer, likely because the image was taken so long ago.

This brings me to another point of confusion; I saw that one of the copyright tags pertains to an exception regarding UN media that was published prior to 1987. The World Bank is a part of the UN and the image in question was TAKEN in 1986. I was unsure if it qualified for this particular exception.

• I would agree that it is likely that the image is OK, but likely is not enough. For a third-party image, we need positive evidence that it is either in the public domain or has a third-party license. But your point about UN media prior to 1987 is an interesting one. Jpeg image in "other resolutions" after upload has horizontal artifacts

I just uploaded this photo: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henry_Keazor.jpg and wonder, why the horizontal lines are in the smaller version of the image (the original is fine). I tried to save as baseline "optimized" (first upload) and baseline "standard" (second upload), using Photoshop Cs6. Any ideas how to avoid these artifacts? Need help with upload some pictures from a site.

I want to upload some pictures from http://archive.adaic.com/ase/ase02_01/bookcase/sprpts/microsoft_reports/winme/index.htm, but I'm not sure if its copyrighted. Can somebody help me if this copyrighted or not? If not, what license should I choose?

Annoying Timeout? Can it be changed somewhere?

Hi. I just tried to upload some 29 photos from last and this year using Upward Wizard. I selected time (year) for each of the photo files. I also changed the description language for each of the files and was about ready in selecting at least two categories for each of the files I intended to upload. Then, SURPRISE SURPRISE, the display returned to startup page of Upward Wizard, and did not allow me to select the categories for the last 2-3 files files. I was selecting categories or setting the time for one of the files the same minute my upload process was cut short. I had not yet managed to add any description for the files as this is typically the last phase of my uploads. My questions are:

• Where could a copy of the work I had already done (e.g. selection of the categories took about an hour) before my work was cut short?
• And how to change the timeout settings (or similar) of this download process (wicked Upward Wizard/Witch) so that it would not delete my work when already some 70% of the work is done?

I know that this kind of problems do not typically occur when I download less than 15 files. But when I try to upload more, this might occur. It is very annoying when the work of users who try to contribute is deleted/ cut short. The Upward Wizard/Witch does not warn me in any way about timeout. BR,

The 6 h timelimit did not occur in this case nor did such an error message appear, as less than 2 h had passed (possibly 1,5 h) when the session/ updates were lost. missing OTRS ticket

What's the best way to deal with a missing OTRS ticket? This logo was uploaded by the copyright owners (that's for sure) but formally, they should also state that the usage isn't a copyright infringement, shouldn't they? @GeoTrinity: There is a gadget you can turn on in preferences, the somewhat oddly named 'Quick Delete', that gives you buttons for tagging files as missing permission, source, or license; and automatically notifying the uploader. The files are converted to a speedy deletion if the issue is not fixed (and the template removed) after seven days. If the uploader sends an email to OTRS, {{OTRS pending}} can be put in it's place... that gives a 30 day window. Revent^talk 07:18, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

Error when uploading image

I'm trying to upload this Flickr image ( flic.kr/p/Jsfs6F ) to Commons, but I get the following error when trying to do so: "<api-error-spamblacklist>". That's all the information I'm getting. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong? I've not yet tried to upload any other pictures today, though I successfully uploaded two dozen images yesterday. The blacklist would be the URL, not you.

There area a lot of ways to upload to Commons. You don't say what tool you are using.

I was unaware that Flickr is now on the spamlist. I've seen other prolific editors upload lots of CC Flickr images in the past, so I was under the impression that this was considered a good thing? The other image I have in mind ( KgHt82 ) only has people in it and, assuming the uploader is the photographer, is licensed as CC-BY-2.0. Is there any way to get it on Commons? I made a concept for a new game. When i upload this concept on wikipedia is this consept protected by international law the same way as when i protect it at W.I.P.O in Vienna. Or is it free the anybody to take my concept in production and selling it without me knowing about it.

• This page is the help desk for Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia Commons, like Wikipedia, is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation, but it is a separate project. That said, I can't see any reason a "concept for a new game" would belong in Wikipedia, and I strongly doubt that it would be a good idea (on any level: appropriateness, preservation of your intellectual property rights) to bring it there. I am brand new to Wikipedia/WikiMedia/ the Commons (as well as coding) and am making newby mistakes. I have a written copyright lease from the photographer and am authorized to publish these image files as I chose. The photographer is emailing permission using the OTRS template and will send it to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. The directions say "add ORTS pending to the file description and while being processed it won't be deleted. I am confused about where specifically to add the tag OTRS pending to the the file names. • Clearly the license tag you gave is not appropriate: it's not a screenshot.
• The PDF you give as a source says, at the bottom of page 4, that it was copyrighted in 2006, so it is certainly still in copyright, so only the copyright-holders can grant permission for it to be on Commons. See COM:OTRS for discussion of getting such permission, though in this case I think it is unlikely.
• The portion in question is simply text. You can cite that text in a Wikipedia article, if that was your intention. - Jmabel ! talk 16:08, 10 August 2016 (UTC)

The reason of putting all 6 different pieces of text together on this single picture file is first they were widely scattered inside the original document and second I did not want to take a chance to hand copy the text and thus make a mistake.   • No. As I said, the underlying PDF is clearly marked as copyrighted. This is copyrighted material, and your compilation of pieces of it does not change that. 1941 Kellett Universal Newsreel

I recently upload " File:1941 Kellett Universal Newsreel.webm " on autogyros. I did it by recording off my laptop screen with my Sony digital camera. However IF the YouTube video could be downloaded directly, I believe the quality of the video I am trying to show in the article I created of " W. Wallace Kellett " will be much better.

Where is there a good Help Index for wediting Wikiversity pages

Where is there a good Help Index for editing Wikiversity pages? There is scattered information on editing but when I click on help there is this terrible inadequate index that when I put in boxes gives me everything but what I need for editing. And for color schemes there is no index item for that or where there is a list of colors or code. • Most important: you say this is your "own work" but clearly it has been previously published. If you are, indeed the copyright holder (presumably the photographer), then send permission as described at COM:OTRS. If not, then either you need to correctly say who is the authr (photographer) and get them to send permission as described at COM:OTRS, or we need to delete the file as being here without appropriate permission.

Apparently, I have been blocked from making contributions to Wikipedia Commons by one of your editors who goes by the name Magog the Ogre.

I wholeheartedly support the mission of Wikipedia of making useful information readily available to the public. I use Wikipedia all the time, and am grateful for its existence. From time to time over the years, I have written the occasional article for Wikipedia and have made occasional additions to existing articles. Bravo to you and your organization for your contribution to making the world a better place.

I also fully support Wikipedia Commons’ efforts to protect copyrights. I am the author of books and guest columns in newspapers and magazines. I am also a painter of paintings and other works of art. So, I appreciate the value of copyrights.

However, I feel that Magog the Ogre’s actions in blocking my account are arbitrary and unreasonable, and therefore infuriating. Recently, I submitted two images (one was the town seal of Sutton, Massachusetts and the other was the town seal of Rutland, Massachusetts) on the same day within a short time of one another. Later, I received a message from Magog the Ogre stating that I had “uploaded several files that are copyright violations. You have done so despite requests from editors not to do so, and despite their instructions… This is your last warning. Continuing to upload copyright violations will result in your account being blocked.” Without any further uploading, or other action on my part, the next thing I know my account has been blocked. Perhaps Magog the Ogre blocked the account without bothering to look to see that the time of my second posting was before he issued his warning. Or perhaps he is foolhardy (which is part of the Wikipedia description of the word “ogre”). The dictionary defines the word “foolhardy” as reckless and irresponsible. It seems that Magog the Ogre has chosen an apt nickname for himself. I’m sure that Magog the Ogre’s reaction to my apparently ignoring several requests from editors to cease infringing on copyrights in my uploads would be something along the lines of “Can’t you read plain English?”

Unfortunately, I can. That is the cause of my confusion.

For example, the boilerplate messages I have received from Wikipedia editors indicate that Wikipedia does not accept “fair use” content. Having received this message, being curious, I started looking at other images in use on Wikipedia. Lo and behold, what did I find, but numerous instances of images posted there under “fair use.”

I’m not a copyright lawyer, but there it was in plain English. I found many such examples with only a few minutes of searching.

So, I figure there must be some exceptions to the stated “no fair use” rule. I carefully read the language used on the examples that were accepted by Wikipedia, which typically included such notations that the image is of low resolution, helps the reader identify the painting style of the painter, etc. and that it therefore qualifies as “fair use.”

I would then apply the same phrases that had been accepted by Wikipedia as “fair use” to my uploads. To my dismay, they would then be rejected anyway by the Wikipedia editors.

By the way, guess where I got the images of the town seals of Sutton, Massachusetts and Rutland, Massachusetts that were rejected as copyright infringements. From Wikipedia! I clearly stated this fact when submitting the images. Yet, both were rejected and my account was blocked.

You can imagine my consternation. I muttered several descriptive words for Magog that were stronger than “ogre.”

The boilerplate, less-than-helpful language in the editors’ responses would state that Wikipedia does not accept “fair use.” I did not find any mention that the law had changed, or that Wikipedia policy had changed, so naturally I can only conclude that Wikipedia’s policies are inconsistently applied. If there is some rationale to them, it would be nice if the prepackaged, one-size-fits-all response of the editors explained this.

I received an email from the editors. It would be nice if I could respond to this directly by email, rather than be forced to wade through the less-than-user-friendly Wikipedia labyrinth to try to respond.

I doubt if I am the only contributor who comes away from this sort of experience frustrated and having an unpleasant taste in his mouth at the thought of Wikipedia Commons.

I suggest two things:

1. Review your stated “no fair use” policy, and either apply it consistently or explain the inconsistencies in your editors’ responses. 2. Review the Magog the Ogre’s decision to block my account. My actions were not malicious. Rather, they were a series of efforts to reconcile the stated Wikipedia Commons policy with its actual practice.

The English language Wikipedia accepts fair use images under certain conditions, but Wikimedia Commons doesn't. If you upload at Wikipedia and identify the uploads as fair use, then the files won't be uploaded to Commons. I think Magog the Ogre only gave you a warning, and your account isn't actually blocked, but if you need to appeal a block, see Commons:Blocking_policy#Appealing_a_block. --ghouston (talk) 04:45, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

• You are not blocked (you are posting here). As you can see in the log for your account, an administrator blocked you by mistake and he unblocked you just one minute later and he said he was sorry for the mistake.
• Each of the many different "projects" of the Wikimedia Foundation has its own website and is bound to different rules and policies.
  • The media repository Wikimedia Commons (which is this project, here) is not allowed to host, on its website, non-free files under the doctrine of "fair use". The rules that apply to Wikimedia Commons are listed at Commons:Policies and guidelines. They include the important policies Commons:Project scope and Commons:Licensing. The help page Commons:FAQ can also be useful.
  • The English-language version of the encyclopedia Wikipedia (which is another project, not here) has a special policy, which exceptionally allows it to host, on its website, non-free files under the doctrine of "fair use", if the files are used in encyclopedic articles, that is to say, within a context of actual "fair use". The policies of the English-language Wikipedia are found on its website. They include en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. That particular policy about "fair use" at the English-language Wikipedia is exceptional. I think that most Wikipedia encyclopedias in other languages do not allow "fair use". The policies of other projects are found on their respective websites.

@Refiloehape: In the vast majority of cases, no. Nearly all images you find on the internet are copyrighted, even if they do not display a copyright notice (such a notice has not been required for a very long time) and cannot be uploaded to Commons. Such images need to be either clearly in the public domain (unlikely, for anime) or freely licensed by the author, with that licenses shown at the source. Revent^talk 05:26, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

My artwork permission issue

File:Mari Lwyd.jpg This image was reported because they didn't believe that it was my own work, but it is my work and I gave uploaded exactly how I should have.. however, it still has a warning and I have sent wiki an email with permission form agreeing that it's my own work and nothing has come of it.. @Hogyncymru: What LX said, and... you won't be blocked unless you either start repeatedly uploading the same file out of process, or become a problem by uploading substantial number of files that are deleted for the same reason without addressing the issue. Simple cases of missing permissions, that are later resolved through OTRS, are normal. If OTRS manages to at least verify that an email about the file has been received (but, see that backlog) before the file is deleted they will mark it that way, which will give it another 30 day grace period. Resolving issues on a page

Hello,

I have made edits to the page "Brucius," and there are still a couple issues flagged: it's an orphan page, and requires additional citation as a biography of a living person.

The former issue I think can be resolved by linking from other broader articles, but the latter I believe has already been resolved.

What other revisions can I make to the page to meet the requirements as a biography?

Uploading via Android app

Hello, now a days I am uploading photos to commons via android app. There is a problem . The photos I uploaded via app contains a header message "This image does not appear to have a description in your interface language. please add one." But my interface language for commons is english and I add description for this photos then why it says so. and image upload days shows as photo taken date. it should be solved. ferdous ^TM 01:29, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

@Ferdous: Your uploads, that I looked at, don't appear to be broken. The 'date' in the summary section of the file page is supposed to be the date the image was taken, it is being extracted from the EXIF metadata saved in the image itself, and the date of your actual upload is shown farther down in the image history. The message about 'not having a description in your interface language' is does not mean your images are not described... they have descriptions, the descriptions are just not specifically marked as being in english, and so the site isn't able to attempt to give you the 'appropriate language' version. I don't think the app supports actually marking the descriptions as being in a particular language, but if it bothers you then writing the description as {{en|description here}} will mark it. • You should be able to write on their talk page exactly the same way you wrote here (do remember to end with ~~~~, though, which is turned into your signature. There should be a "+" tab on the top nav that will start a new section on their talk page. (A user talk page has a name based on the username; for example, yours is User talk:Daemon1953.) I suggest that when you leave a message on someone's talk page, you also add that user talk page to your watchlist, so you can easily see in one place where you may have responses. Also, I suggest you don't initially start too many similar discussions at once with different users: that can be seen as spamming.
  • Most of us choose to keep the conversation on the same user talk page where it started, but some people will respond on your own user talk page.

Hi, This week EurovisionNim was blocked for 3 months for cropping other peoples images, Having come across this discussion with said editor OSX seems to be cropping their own work and uploading different versions of their images,
So my question is Are uploaders allowed to crop their own work and are they allowed to upload completely different images([1]) or should both be uploaded as completely new images?,
As we prohibit anyone from cropping other peoples work I'm not sure if the same goes for uploaders?

If a crop means just removing an annoying border, normally there is no problem with overwriting. But if you e.g. crop File:Cérémonie de remise des diplômes d'archiviste paléographe (2016).jpg into File:Anne-Lise Depoil.jpg, you must upload the crop under a different name of course. Photos of Korean War POW's being repatriated in Sept. 1953

I am new to this sort of thing, so bear with me. I am trying to find photos of American POW's being repatriated from North Korea in September 1953. Had my photo taken by photographer Al Chang as I was being greeted by some 4 star general, could be Ridgeway or Taylor upon my release by the Chinese who held me captive in North Korea for 34 months. Al told me a copy would be sent to my parents but never was; at least they never received it. Can anyone with more knowledge than I with a PC offer some help? Thanks. Given that Al Chang was an Army photographer, I was going to suggest a few places where you could look, but during my research on the internet I saw that you already asked at the obvious places, NARA, etc. [2]. If even the NARA people can't find the photos, we probably can't help much. But just in case, can you give a few more details? What was the location where the photo was taken? Did you ever see the photograph published in any publication at any time? Or heard that anyone has seen it? If nobody saw it, maybe the film was overexposed or something and was unusable. "Sticky" category?

Look into Category:Area stamps of Germany: There are many files that are overcategorized. It appears that all images of stamps in that category - such as File:Alliierte 1948 969 Hannover Exportmesse.jpg - are also in one of its sub-categories, so it would make sense to remove the main category from the file pages themselves, and keep only the sub-categories. However, I cannot do so. For HotCat, the main category is inaccessible, and if I try to edit the file page by hand, the main category is nowhere listed. My guess is that it may have been transcluded from somewhere, but I do not know where. Why is that so, and how can it be changed? --Schlosser67 (talk) 10:14, 18 August 2016 (UTC)

Release/permission form

JP2 image files

Hi there. I'm trying to upload this image to the Commons. When I downloaded the highest quality image, it saved as a "JP2" file. When I tried to upload the image to the Commons, I got a message saying the Commons doesn't accept JP2 files. Should I convert the image to a different file format? If so, which one? Thanks! JP2 is the file extension for en:JPEG 2000 proprietary file format. By this reason it is not supported by Wikimedia. You can also find a list of applications that support it there. Just convert it to jpg if it uses lossy compression and png if lossless. Ruslik (talk) 17:04, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

NEED HELP REPLACING A PAGE'S MAIN PHOTO

This shouldn't be that difficult apparently it is. I uploaded a photo (OWN WORK) but someone deleted it saying it's elsewhere...obviously it's elsewhere, it's free for anyone to use and it's a press photo for a musician. See COM:NETCOPYRIGHT#Press photos. Wikimedia Commons only accepts photograph where the copyright has expired, or the copyright has been explicitly licensed. How exactly do you want us to help? Hi, The account Maddiefreeman has uploded two files: log. One file was deleted because it was uploaded in the wrong place, over a different photograph by someone else, which should not be done. The other file is not deleted but it is subject to a deletion discussion because of the previous publication. This is to preserve the rights of the copyright holder, because technically anyone can create an account with any username and claim to be the author. Their comment here suggests they are not the copyright holder of the image but a member of Nick Waterhouse PR team. The copyright holder is the original photographer. Unidentified people category

Hi, first visit - I came across a category of unidentified people, some of whom I can name. Do I just edit the description by adding the identity (and maybe the wlink/full url to the subject's article on en wp?) or just add some info on the file's discussion page, or do something else altogether? I'd expand that with the following:

• Links to appropriate Wikipedia articles are often helpful, so feel free to add those. (You need to prefix article name with ":en:" to link to an article on English Wikipedia. A pipe after the article name will make the link prettier.)
• Only remove the "unidentified" category if you have added a more appropriate category instead (never leave a file completely uncategorised) and there are no other unidentified subjects in the photo.

File Red de museos para la atencion a personas con discapacidad.webm

Hi. My program "Wiki Learning" uploaded a video created by our students in collaboration with museums in Mexico City. This video has been deleted (with no warning to me, the uploader) and I would like to know why. The video has an OTRS letter which was referenced in the description of the video. The log shows that the deletion comment was "No OTRS permission since 26 July 2016". (Something odd is that the file doesn't seem to have an upload log.) One possibility is that the description page had a template "OTRS pending" but without an actual OTRS ticket. Such files get deleted after a while. But they can be restored if a ticket exists. The situation can be due to the backlog at OTRS. The people who can tell you more information would be the OTRS members. You can ask at the Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard, but don't necessarily expect a quick reply there. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:34, 20 August 2016 (UTC)

Sadly, uploader was not notified prior to deletion. It's quiet unfortunate that a core procedure was ignored. The file was deleted by Jcb with the rationale "No OTRS permission since 26 July 2016". Asclepias's suggestion above about posting at Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard is cool but I don't think they would be interested in restoring a deleted file with no valid OTRS Ticket. However, you may want to send permission to COM:OTRS, attaching the name of the deleted file, if possible attach the original file (if its not too large). Once they receive this permission, a valid ticket would be generated for the file and it would be restored. I'm sorry, you weren't notified before it was previously deleted. Warm regards. On upload, 27 May, uploader declared to have sent a permission to OTRS. Unfortunately we received nothingv as far as I can see. The {OTRS pending} is a delayed nomination for deletion, in this case pasted by uploader. So is was the task of nobody else to notify the uploader. You're still mistaken. That point applies to the regular deletion process, also known as deletion discussions. The thing is, we don't normally delete file history & I can't see any good reason to do so here. For what it's worth, even deleting big files does not save server space (it's a soft delete, the file is still there, just not shown) and these files are tiny. Hello English native speakers: What's the name for waste collectors under the surface?!

Hi folks, in Germany and France, waste containers under the surface become more and more popular. In German, the technical term is "Unterflurbehälter" (literally: under surface box), and I have written the article on it in the German project. I now wanted to add an English explanation to the category but although I used to live and work both in the UK and the US for quite a while, I have no clue at all what the correct English term for these containers could be (... in fact, I haven't even seen them outside Germany or France)! Have a look yourselves and please tell me here what kind of English labels/further categories I could use for my category. • I don't think there is any established English-language name for these; we'd probably call them some variant of "underground waste/trash/garbage/rubbish receptacles/cans/containers". If the use was specifically recycling/compost we might use that word rather than waste/trash/garbage/rubbish. "Underground" (rather than "under-surface") is the one constant. • In the US, I've seen both "inground trash cans" (example) and "underground garbage cans" (example), although both of those sites use both of those terms, and the latter even "underground receivers." • Hi, GeoTrinity. There is not an established term that I know of. Does anyone who sells them have an English website? As for what I would call it... I would avoid any term containing "rubbish", "litter", or "trash", for inclusivity. There are other terms to avoid. In Canada and parts of the US it would be called a bear bin. The term applies to any bearproof container, though, including aboveground ones, and it's a pretty silly term for anything in Germany. Giving its height is also awkward. If it's outside, one could call it an underground bin; inside, one could call it an underfloor bin (because "floor" is only for indoor surfaces, and "ground" implies soil). To encompass both, one could call it a (be) low-level bin, by analogy to other things that don't fit into either category neatly. "Below-grade" is technically correct, and probably what a city works department installing the things would call them. "Below-surface" would also work. "Under surface" would be regarded by some as incorrect (as a compound adjective, it would be hyphenated to "under-surface", or you'd technically have to interpret it as a surface bin from Australia, or from a firm named "Under", or some such). "Under-surface" is long, cumbersome and odd-sounding and "undersurface" as an adjective is odd, as it can refer to the underside of a surface or a layer just below a surface (e.g. "the undersurface of the kitchen counter is not waterproof"). Am I right in thinking that this is an outdoor-only thing? I've never seen one indoors in Germany.

You could use "underground bin" if they are exclusively outdoor, and in at least some side contact with the soil. "Below-grade bin" sounds like something out of a civic planning document, and is unlikely as a colloquial term, but is otherwise excellent. "Bin" also works for recycling and compost, as these all go in bins; "receiver" and "receptacle" have both been used as synonyms, but I think the shorter "bin" will be understood worldwide although it's more European. Technically "bin" would not include the chute, just the receptacle at the bottom.

There exists an indoor thing like this, called a rubbish/trash/garbage chute; many tall buildings have them, and they often terminate outside, in warmer climes. "Chute" technically only applies to the shaft leading to the bin, but you could term the street furniture "waste chutes" (recycling and compost are also waste). So "waste chute" would be a decent title for the same article.

I think "waste chute" is best, and throw in a bit on indoor vs. outdoor waste chutes. "Below-grade bin" is what I'd call the bit that isn't the chute. I'd refer to bin and chute together as "waste chute", by synecdoche from the most visible bit. HLHJ (talk) 14:14, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

As for downloading, https://dumps.wikimedia.org/backup-index.html states that "There are currently no image dumps available." I think the "current" situation has been the case since the dawn of (wiki)time. Which is too bad really. Forking Wikipedia is pretty easy, as it should be, but forking Commons would require a lot of web crawling. And I can't really see any good reason for it. At less than 3000 USD, 90 TB of storage is, while not exactly cheap, at least within many contributors' reach. I for one would definitely be interested in doing some data dumpster diving, mainly with a focus on metadata, maybe not on the whole set, but maybe 10% chunks. —LX (talk, contribs) 18:22, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

They were merely intermediary steps toward the finished version, which I should never have uploaded. It wasn't an issue until recently when an editor mistook one of my intermediary steps as an older logo by another artist. File won't upload

I made a new version of an image and did "upload a new version of this file". After several minutes, it did nothing so I stopped it. I tried again and it has been doing nothing for several minutes. I just uploaded some files with Vicuna Uploader with no problem. Why won't uploading this replacement file work? (it is small < 800KB) Bubba73 (talk) 18:14, 25 August 2016 (UTC)

• This must have been right at the end of Toller's life, since he died in 1939. I honestly don't know the copyright status of Kaufmann's work, especially because if they were "as he was working on" them he would not have registered a copyright at the time the photos were taken; also I have no idea whether his heirs would have renewed the copyright (as was necessary in the US in that era). The license there is certainly wrong: either Kaufmann's copyright persists (in which case you are in no position to grant a license, only his heirs are) or not (in which case the work is in the public domain). Separately, you ask if you may upload a photo of Toller (I assume that is distinct from the painting, and is simply a photograph of the man). • Prior to January 1978 in the U.S, the duration of all copyrights was split into two consecutive 28-year terms. During the last (28th) year of the initial term, authors were entitled to renew their copyrights for a further term of 28 years. Through a series of amendments to the Copyright Act, the renewal term was extended 19 years, and then an additional 20 years, for a total of 95 years (28+28+19+20=95). Arthur Kaufmann died in 1971, it is possible the copyright of the work was renewed in 1960 (if ever published) before his death. Thus, if his heir recapture his copyright for the extended term after his death, then the image will not be in the public domain until 2027. @BM Tornado: what Rimshot is saying is that you need permission from the copyright holder of the image, in this case from the original photographer or AFP if the photographer is an employee of AFP and the work was produced in the course of their services. This permission must be sent to our support team. You can only upload images here without a written permission from anyone if you took the images yourself. Need help using the correct license

We manage several music artists and do their public relations & marketing. I don't know under what license to put up their images as they keep being deleted. We have 100% rights and access to use these images from the artists themselves. The images belong to the artists. How should I upload them so they dont get deleted? I'd be grateful for some help. Your uploads being deleted probably has nothing to do with the license selection and everything to do with lack of evidence to support your claims that you personally created and hold the copyright to the works – or the presence of evidence to the contrary.

For example, you are claiming that you are the author (creator) and copyright holder of File:Buika in Concert.jpg. However, unless you are Javi Rojo, you are not the author of File:Buika in Concert.jpg, and it is not your own work. And unless Javi Rojo is your employee (which seems unlikely), or there is a written contract mentioning the words "work made for hire" or "transfer of copyright", then you are not the copyright holder either.

The only one who can issue a valid license to a copyrighted work is the legitimate copyright holder, so the appropriate license is whichever license the legitimate copyright holder has agreed to – if any. So for works created by a third party and/or where the copyright is held by a third party, you need to accurately attribute them and provide evidence that they have approved publication under a free license.

New to Uploading Pictures to Wikipedia

Hello to you. I am so new to the uploading of pictures into Wikipedia. The subject concerned here is the upload of some pictures for the Calgary CTrain stations topic. I produced the pictures myself, but I do not know if I am reading the rules right. Some pictures here are buildings that surround a particular CTrain station. An Image from Wiki Law School

Hello, can this image of Prof. Janet Halley of the Harvard law school be added to the Commons? It is used in Wiki Law School, but doesn't seem to have licensing information. It says that the photo was taken from the law school, so check the source, where's there doesn't seem to be any mention that it is free. Images that are not free can't be uploaded to Commons. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:56, 24 August 2016 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Airblue's Destination Map.png

Hi. I uploaded a picture of Airblue's, airline of Pakistan, destination map picture. While uploading, the license I chose was that it isn't my work and I provided the link of the website and its author but now the picture says " The uploader did not provide sufficient information (a valid and suitable tag) on this media's copyright status. Unless the copyright status is provided, the file could be deleted seven days after the upload (24 August 2016). Please note that Commons does not accept files claimed under fair use. It is suggested to read the intro of Commons' licensing policy, about essential information and (in many cases) about Internet images ". Help required about what to do!

I am not sure who and where this message should go, I am having problems of getting information on images on the public domain hoping that you can help. Do you know if all images in the public domain is free to download and use to teach a lesson in education to students? is there a way to make sure the images are okay to use.

• If an image is in the public domain, then by definition you it is free to download and to use in any lawful manner. Edittools

Hi, I am asking here because I could not find any hint elsewhere, at least not in the preferences pages.

The so called "edittools" below the edit box offer many items for e.g. the text insertion; some do I need frequently, some never. And some I am missing.

Is there a possibility to customize these tools - in a simple way, without an intimate knowledge of Java & Co.?

Copyright help regarding File:Debbiearnold.jpg

How do we avoid this photo being deleted? It's Debbie Arnold's own photo off her website. It's there with her permission, she wanted her wiki page updating.

Hi KenBarlow. The original photographer is the copyright holder of the work with the explicit right to release it under a free license. In this case, either you or Debby needs to get the original photographer to send permission to COM:OTRS. @Till.niermann: If you're using the Upload Wizard, you can select "This file is not my own work." option and then fill out the requested information and select the "Creative Commons Attribution 3.0" license. Time period

There's a note at the bottom of a website reading as such:"© 2003-2011 All the rights of this website belong to **** group. Copying the works without permission is illegal." Does this note means that we can copy the materials after 2011 and the works are in public domain by now? --Mhhossein ^talk 04:51, 27 August 2016 (UTC)

It means that the website was last updated 2011 and copyright will not expire before 2081, possibly much later. In reality, it is of no consequence, because it does not distinguish between the copyright durations of different material on the site (older photos' copyright may expire earlier, some material might be ineligible for copyright, etc.) In general, you can assume anything remotely modern found on any website to be copyrighted. --rimshot^talk 07:30, 27 August 2016 (UTC)

The expiring date of 2081 mentioned by Rimshot depends on weather the work was first published on the website which reads © 2003-2011 and the US copyright law. It also depends on the author of the work and the copyright law in their country. If the author is a Somali person for example, the copyright of the work will also depends on the Somali copyright law regardless of where it was first published. All the best. I'm trying to upload a photo to and article "Marjorie Lynn" and I keep getting an error message. I'm confused since this if my first time uploading and the photo seems to be fine. Any help would be appreciated.

I see from Special:AbuseLog/1444644 that you encountered an upload filter that prevents low-resolution uploads from newly registered users using the particular upload process that you used. The reason for this filter is that such uploads overwhelmingly turn out to be copyright violations. An 970×1255 pixel image is quite small and more typical of a file downloaded from the Internet than what a camera would produce. Do I need to credit a photo in public domain that isn't credited on Wiki Commons?

Although Wiki Commons says this photo is in the public domain and doesn't mention the source, I have seen it in a book as credited to a historical society. Is this really in the public domain and do I have to credit the historical society?

The credit to a historical society is most likely not a credit to the 'author', but instead to a 'source' for a copy of an image, and the copy obtained from Commons is not from that source. You are not legally obligated to give any attribution or sourcing for a public domain image, though you 'should' (in my opinion) for the sake of historical accuracy if nothing else. I don't se any actual proof that the image is PD, but it probably is. The General disclaimer definitely applies, especially for any commercial use. Revent^talk 00:28, 5 September 2016 (UTC)

• There appears never to have been a Sedo Logo New.png or (more likely) File:Sedo Logo New.png so I'm a bit confused by the headline here. You have no deleted files. Your only upload was File:Sedo logo.svg which I presume was the old logo.
