Forcing a commons image to display at Wikipedia?

I am trying to display an image at Wikipedia that is locally uploaded there under the same name as here and consequently I am only getting the local image. Is there a syntax to use? I tried various things such as [[media:name]], [[image:commons/name]] but I'm guessing blind.--68.237.2.101 01:32, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

This was just asked: #Pictures with the same name on different projects. There is no syntax. You have to upload the Commons image under a new name or get the local one deleted. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 04:34, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

licensing for current commons works that are altered

If I take an image that's already in the commons, edit it, and save it as a new image, what is the licensing for that? I didn't create the image, so I can't claim it as my own work, but I didn't take it from another wiki. Elpiseos 15:58, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

The license of the new image depends on a) what is the license of the original and b) what you did with the image. Regarding authors, you can usually put your name and the name of the the author of the original image, in the author field of {{Information}} template. Samulili 16:26, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

How to restore contests of my talk page?

Hello, I've made quite a mess at my talk page by blanking it and deleting the messages at different time. I'm not sure how to restore absolutely everything in the right order. Very confused with all the new info

I am really new to Commons and should like to know what an orphan means after a picture? Another problem, when I click at the Common Sense tool, I end up on a page written in the Arabic script!! What is the matter? - Tellervo 17:29, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

First of all, welcome to Commons! You might want to check out our first steps guide if you haven't already. It sounds like you've been using the gallery application, which is technically not part of Commons, but lives on Wikimedia's toolserver, and is bolted onto Commons because it's pretty useful to our work.
To quote meta:User:Duesentrieb/OrphanImages, orphans are "images that are not used in the main namespace and not categorized". See Commons:First steps/Sorting for how to improve the situation. I'm not sure what's happening with the Common Sense tool. Could you state the specific page where you found the link and the address to the resulting Arabic page? —LX (talk, contribs) 18:17, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
I have tried to enter the Common Sense tool from my talk page (first steps) and from my gallery. From both places the result is the same: I end up on the page with Arabic script. The site has no addres, that is mystifying to me. On the top of it is a statement about how well

Error generating thumbnail

I'm getting this error for all the thumbnail images of my newly uploaded SVG graphic.

The full SVG seems to show up fine, am I doing something wrong or is this a technical problem?

The SVG image contained a large embedded JPEG image and is therefore not a true vector image.
Also, {{PD-textlogo}} does not apply to this image as the title logo for the Passions television show is a stylised, shaded and layered combination of renditions of the word Passions superimposed upon one another. It is not "text in a general typeface" (in fact, each occurrence of the letter s in the bottom layer is unique), so it is copyrightable. Therefore, I've deleted the image as a copyright violation. Even if you manage to correct the technical problems, please do not upload it again. —LX (talk, contribs) 19:12, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

faded images

I have adjusted a faded picture in commons (in faded images section). How and what do I do to put the adjusted image where it belongs ie back with the other faded image (although no longer faded) or somewhere else? It's a good job image restoration is my thing, because as can be seen, my other compuer skill leave much to be desired!   • You could upload it over top of the original (ie upload it with exactly the same name) but this is usually not appreciated unless you ask the original uploader first (they might not think your improvement is really better :-). So probably best to upload it as a separate image giving credits to the original author and honouring their license. You can then replace the original in galleries etc and people can easily revert it if they don't like the new one. If the original happened to be classified as a Featured Picture or Quality Image then definitely do not over write the original. --Tony Wills 21:49, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

Cover of an early 19th century music publication

Hello, I've been absent from Commons for quite a while and things have changed since then. I used to simply describe the image and add the appropriate license (in this particular case the image was created in 1805 so I'd add the "author died 70+ years ago" license and be done with it), but now the interface asks me where the picture is from, date, etc.. The picture is a (sadly slightly low-quality) scan from a CD booklet; it was created in 1805 and I figured it'd be possible to upload it (its just a low-quality reproduction of a very old image, the scan doesn't show any of the booklet text). Oh, and I have no idea who the actual author is (and I don't think anyone does, its just a cover with some text, no drawings). Is it still possible to upload? And if the answer is yes, which license should I use and what should I do with "Author", "Permission", "Source" and "Date" fields? Jashiin 16:26, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

The answer is yes, at least if you know in the case. I would personally add the following:
Author= Unknown, likely anonymous (certainly at least 70 years ago)
Permission = public domain (pd-old)
Source = Back of <said CD cover>
Date = 1805

Image found -- problems I am not qualified to address

Hello,

I was uploading an image whose name I opted to start with "Blue" and a little warning preview presented itself with this image (whose name here is Blue.jpg).

The list of ways I am not qualified to work with this image is longer than the list of things that are wrong about this image.

It has no category, it has a bad name -- however if it has a duplicate, I am not certain how to find it even.

I would be able to drive the real thing much better than I can steer the image of it around this collection.

This image is used only at a en.wiki user page en:User:Rudeboy87.
I see two alternatives for this image:
  1. Creating Category:Files by User:Mike tj (the uploader here on Commons) and put the image into it, but not in a topic category,
  2. list this image for deletion because it is out of project scope and used only at user page by an user that is inactive since two years. I think first is the best way. --GeorgHH 20:13, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

A seal of a municipality

My photographs of paintings in museums

I do not understand whether the photos I have made of paintings by long-dead painters may be uploaded into Commons. The online images of these paintings in museums, US and European, are generally declared to be copyrighted.

If not, why, in plain language.

If so, may I declare them Public Domain, e.g. {{PD-self}}? If so, may I declare them {{Cc-by-3.0|Attribute to Henry Townsend}} ? Henrytow 21:27, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

You may declare them as in the public domain, but you will need to give information on the original authors. Some online paintings are claimed as copyrights because they are, in fact, derivative works of the paintings - the museums claim that by scanning the work, they are creating their own copyright; naturally, this is a point of contention and not recognized in many countries (see Commons:When_to_use_the_PD-Art_tag#Country-specific_rules). The authors, in most of these countries, will need to have been dead for at least 70 years ({{Pd-art}}); the US is the major exception (anything prior to 1923 - {{PD-art-US}}). Your best bet would be to contact this user on their talk page. For example, my talk page, which can be located at the address http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User talk:[Insert exact username here] is located at User talk:Patstuart (capitalization exact). If the user doesn't seem to be able to respond, or if you think it'd be a better idea, you can set up an account (try clicking on Special:Watchlist, and there will be a link on that page) and then click on the Email user button on the user's user page. Logo LiD.jpg

Dear all, here's an interesting one: I uploaded an Image, which is the Logo of a Polish political organisation. Before I did that, I wrote to that organisation to ask permission to use their logo. They replied, granting that permission. When I uploaded the image, I included the content of the mail granting permission in the file info and sent a copy of that mail to permissions@wikimedia.org. I did not choose a license, because non of the ones offered seemed to fit this situation. I didn't provide information about author and date, because, simply, I don't know who created this Logo and when. Also, though this may be naive, I tought that having obtained permission and having published it (the permission), would be enough. But I still got a message, saying that the media might be deleted. Can anyone help? The file in question is this one.

What licensing terms did the permission stipulate?
All works on Commons must either be in the public domain (free of copyright) or licensed by the copyright holder under terms that allow anyone to publish the work in original or modified form for any purpose, including commercial purposes. From looking at an automatic translation of the permission cited on the image description page, what you have is a Wikipedia-only {{Permission}}. That's not acceptable on Commons because it does not allow anyone to use it (and because this is Commons and not Wikipedia).

inside out notation has been used

I have been using the wrong notation when adding the invisible summary to my edits. Like '*/ comment /*' when '/* comment */' should have been used (or even the other way around -- I am actually asking about how much I need to care about this before I work through it). Do I need to return to all those edits and fix that and how much does this hurt things? -- carol 18:18, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

The /* Text */ notation in an edit summary denotes the sub-heading on the page that has been edited. It is automatically added when clicking an edit link next to a heading on a page rather than the edit tab at the top, and it is shown as a link to that part of the page (such as (→inside out notation has been used - reply)) when looking at page histories, recent changes and your contributions.
There is no need to use asterisks or slashes when making ordinary comments, and since they will be automatically added when you click a section edit link, you never really have to worry about them. You also can't modify edit summaries of edits you've already made even if you wanted to (and it's not a big deal anyway). —LX (talk, contribs) 19:15, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Photos of the Flying Dutchman (Pirates of the Caribbean ship)

I have a couple photos of the Flying Dutchman from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies that I took in the Bahamas last year when it was moored in Freeport following shooting and before being relocated by Disney. I saw it on a shore excursion of the island and there was nothing to prevent people from driving to the canal on the opposite point where it was moored and photographing it. A week or so ago I ran a search for "pirates of the caribbean" and one of the results was a photo of the Black Pearl which I can no longer find. Can someone please merge the above image into the current page for Flag_of_Senegal.svg? The one currently at Flag_of_Senegal.svg is using an incorrect ratio of 3:4, when it should be a 2:3 ratio. Query re artwork published prior to 1923

I've got files of a couple of pieces of art published in 1918 that I'd like to upload to go with an article I'm producing, but I'm a bit wary. I've got no clue which tag I should be using for works published prior to 1923. Both of them are coming from pages affiliated to the US Library of Congress. I guess you can just use {{PD-US}} but only if the image was first published in the USA prior to 1923. If it was only published in another country before 1923 you can upload it to en.wikipedia because they allow the violation of foreign copyrights, if the work would not have been copyrighted had it been in the US. Cropping images

Suppose I want to use a cropped section of a photo. How do I do it? For example, I want a picture of Max Eastman who is one of the persons in this trio:

  1. Verify that the source and licensing information is correct so that you don't end up uploading a copyright violation because of someone else's mistakes or lies.
  2. Click on the image at the image description page so that the only thing showing in your browser is the full-resolution version of the image. Save it on your computer.
  3. Crop the image using an image editing program such as the Gimp.
  4. Upload the image under a new name. As the source, you should state that it is a cropped version of the original image, and you should provide a link to it: [[:Image:Example.jpg]] (the : turns it into a link instead of an inclusion). It's also a good idea to repeat the source information of the original image. Provide the same authorship, date and licensing information as in the original.
Unless the image is in the public domain, you must ensure that you understand and adhere to the licensing terms. Specifically, you should attribute the author and preserve the license. This is especially important if the image has a copyleft-licence. Since there is not much creativity in the act of cropping, you do not hold copyright in your modifications, so you should not make any claims of authorship or of holding copyright.

Uploading with permission

I recently uploaded Image:Sienna_Guillory.jpg, but it was deleted because of a copyright violation. The image was found here at Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/halloweenshortfilmfestival/354044197/ The image was uploaded to flickr by the user under a Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 2.0 Generic license, however, I messaged the user and asked for permission to crop and use the image on the Sienna Guillory article. I got a reply with:

I'm not too familiar with how to upload an image on the Commons even if there is permission from the creator, so I merely copied and pasted the reply above into the image description. Is the flickr conversation public? If not, then I'm afraid it won't be acceptable, as no-one can check it. If it is public, ask for undeletion of the image, giving a link to the public conversation. An email is still better, though, as it can be stored at wikimedia, so that it will be available even when the conversation on flickr cannot be accessed anymore. --rimshottalk 10:18, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Icelandic bank notes

I've created a new template for Icelandic coins and bills {{Icelandic currency}}. Could someone read trough the terms and see if these images can be uploaded on Commons. I contacted the Central Bank of Iceland and they just said that Wikimedia has to follow the rules given on this page. I said that most of these rules did not qualify for digital reproduction, and they said that no special guide lines for Wikimedia were going to be written.       • I don't think it would be a free license. The written permission and no derivative works would be for anyone who uses the images, even after you uploaded them to the commons. I misread before and the written permission is only for use in a manner that is not in keeping with these guidelineswhich may be okay. However, there still is the issue of no derivative works and the way they control how the image is shown, which would still make it a unfree license. --Digon3 talk 01:54, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

Uncategorical Template problem

The little message has appeared lately to "Please categorise these media files today (6 626 remaining). Thank you!". As usual, I look at messages and if it seems like a good idea, I follow them. Yesterday, the suggestion was to categorize 3 uncategorized images, I did that and more (since the few images I picked suggested more images...). Today, I started in the "S" and ended in "T" which is what brings me here now.

Commons:Templates appears in the list of things in "T" that are uncategorized because it contains the uncat template.http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Images_needing_categories&from=T

This is going to bother me; is there anything that can be done about it?

Help with image format

I crooped a n image in Photo Delexe (predecessor to Photoshop) and converted it to JPEG (See File:Nanocache) Could someone help me? Samuell 02:51, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I was checking to see if anyone had suggestions for my problem and I saw yours. I admit, I was afraid to look at the image which was not displaying correctly and I thank you wholeheartedly that it was not a great photograph, but not a rude or lewd one either.
The jpeg was saved with an extra color parameter which the file format jpeg does not understand. The color of transparent which I don't completely understand either. I used the GNU Image Manipulation Program to 'Flatten' the image and re-uploaded it for you, since I don't know how to tell you what to do with that other software to fix things.
If you look at Image:Nanocache.jpg now, you can see that it is displaying a not lewd but also not focused image. Your software should have at least warned you. -- carol 04:49, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Need image moved to Commons

Image:Pierluigi Martini 1994 Minardi.jpg has superseded Image:Luca Badoer Minardi 1994.jpg (see a previous conversation on this here: earlier conversation on WP:MCQ ). I need the Pierluigi Martini image moved to Commons.

CommonsHelper failed to work for moving the image to Commons, but I need it moved so I can fix all of these: http://tools.wikimedia.de/~daniel/WikiSense/CheckUsage.php?i=Luca_Badoer_ Minardi_1994.jpg&w=_100000#end. (If I can get a bot, that would be nice, but right now I'm doing it manually).

Custom license

Hi,

The author of a picture I've uploaded has published on the local wiki its own license.

Photos

If I were to upload a photo that contains random people in it that I took without their permission, might that be okay? Such as if I took a photo of a busy street. Would it be allowed? Marlith 05:10, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Yes. See {{Personality rights}}. The photo can be uploaded so long as the person on the other end is not being depicted in an unworthy manner (i.e., binge drinking with their friends, and this photo could ruin their life). Patstuart (talk) 07:02, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Images never copyrighted?

What tag do you use for things that were never copyrighted because they are too old. {{PD-old}} says the copyright's expired? What if this isn't true, because the image existed before copyright laws? Rocket000 09:02, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Dear help desk volunteers,

A year ago I uploaded this screenshot, foolishly ignorant of Copyright law and related authorship issues. As such, I wrote that the work was mine and licensed it under the public domain. But now I realize that I could not do such thing. Not now, not ever, and I want to fix the situation.

The screenshot shows a logo (the one from Xiph) and some artwork from a software application called Amarok. I'm not sure if those may be licensed under a free license, so I need feedback to know if the image should be 1) marked for deletion, 2) have its license modified, or 3) leave it as it is, which is likely a bad idea.

Before someone decides to flame me for being irresponsible, I'd like to point out I'm the one bringing the issue to light so it may be corrected before it causes any problem.--Ivo (talk, contribs) 14:43, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Firstly, I congratulate you for telling us. Secondly, the software itself is free; I don't see any problem with us keeping the image here. The only problem is the Xiph logo, which is obviously copyrighted. Can this be cropped out, or something? --Boricuæddie 16:57, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Well, I suppose I could take another screenshot this time without OggDropXPd in the background. This would remove the Xiph logo. 1) I can't tell which deity it is: you might want to register an account on English Wikipedia and ask at en:Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Hinduism and/or en:Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Religion (though it might take a while to get an answer).
2) The spelling is Goddess with two d's.
3)Also, can you please give more information about the piece of artwork (i.e., which museum it is in, and who created it, and when)? This helps us to establish that we are allowed to hold to claim copyright on a derivative photograph. Thanks. Patstuart (talk) 20:19, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

You never have to make your name public. Your username is enough for the "author" part (even Anonymous works). I also noticed some of your images are missing licensing info. You should add the appropriate license tag (depending on how you want to release them). Based on your other images you did license, you probably just want to add {{self|GFDL|cc-by-3.0}}. Help with defective videos

None of the Theora videos in Category:Videos by TV Senado from Brazil are playable with the cortado plugin, and screen captures of them don't display in the browser. Plus, when I press the play button, the video will only indefinitely buffer to 2%. Is it a transcoding problem? Because they are playable in an external player, like GOM Player or VLC. --Rayne Van-Dunem 01:29, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

The problem seems that they are mistakenly seen as audio-only files ("Ogg Vorbis sound file"). I did some testing with Image:SergioGomes advogado.ogg and, apparently, the reason is that those are not Ogg-Theora files but DivX5 encoded file in an OGM container. Because of the divx codec, those files don't comply with our project scope and should be re-encoded in Ogg-Theora or deleted. — Xavier, 15:34, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

I applied the official colors, which appear in the French Embassy in Germany or here http://bonjourlafrance.net/french_flag/france_flag.htm And which are: the blue stripe is Pantone Reflex Blue and the red stripe is Pantone 032, which equals to RGB (0,85,164), (255,255,255) and (239,65,53) respectively, or #0055A4, #FFFFFF, #EF4135.

In the picture?

I've downloaded pix from WP & photo-edited them to brighten the image. How do I restore them to WP/Commons without getting tagged for copyvio? (Probably better to post to my WP page Trekphiler). Trekphiler 10:20, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

Why in heaven's name would you download Image:M8GMC-Saumur.0004z89h67.jpg from the Commons (not from the English Wikipedia) and brighten it into Image:M8 gmc (britened).jpg? I don't see that as an improvement, but what the heck. In any case, the original already was here at the Commons. Same for Image:Stuart m5a1 cfb borden 4.JPG and Image:M5a1 (stuart) @cfb borden (britened).jpg, and possibly others.
In any case, just saying "original on English WP" is not good enough. You'll have to give links to the original pictures as sources, and you'll have to comply with the licenses. In the M8 case, you'll have to use {{Cc-by-sa-2.5}} as the license, and you'll have to say that you version is derived from User:Fat yankey's version. SVG too big, .svg.gz or .svgz was not accepted. ✓ Done

I uploaded a function plot both as smoothed png (Image:Popcorn_function_plot_bars.png) and now I wanted to add the svg version but it is quite big (24 MB) so I compressed it with gzip, getting a 1 MB .svg.gz but I could not upload it. So I uploaded it as .svg but of course it cannot be displayed so. (Image:Popcorn_function_plot_bars.svg) :-( Who knows what to do? --RokerHRO 09:54, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Well, the file's still compressed. Changing the file extension won't change that. SVG's should never be that big. My guess is you used the auto-trace function with settings for the most accuracy. Unfortunately, conversion to SVG that way isn't very good and results in huge file sizes. You pretty much have to recreate the image by hand. I'm not sure how much work it would be, but maybe you can write a similar program to create the SVG. Rocket000 12:06, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
The problem is: the image really has that number of horizontal lines. The source code was still a lot larger than it needed to be - I optimized it a bit (down to 6.8MB). The thumbnail displays fine now. --rimshottalk 13:09, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

I know that changing the extension of the uploaded file name does not change the file type. It was just a hack to upload the file to Commons so some of you might download the file to help me.
The SVG is not generated (traced) from the bitmap. Both the SVG and the PNG are generated from a .fig file which is generated by a self-written program, referred in the image description page.
Now I see the SVG generator (fig2dev) inserts a lot of superfluous comments and style tags into the SVG file. :-( --RokerHRO 15:54, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Which copyright/license does this fall under

I want to upload an image to the commons which is a modified version of an image already on the commons. The image in question is a blank map with a one province filled in. I thought it would be useful to have a version of the map for each other province, which would correlate to a Wikipedia page about that. My question: what license tag does that apply to? Is it even legal. I just want to help, and I don't want to infringe a copyright or anything. If you look into Category:Locator maps of provinces of the Roman Empire you will see that images of other provinces already excists on Commons. But if they are not complete and you wish to upload other files, you should give a link to Image:REmpire-blank.png as source and license it {{GFDL}}. --GeorgHH 11:32, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
Some other derivatives may be here but in other categories, like in Category:Maps of ancient Rome or Category:Locator maps of provinces of Roman Gaul (subcat). Renaming an uploaded file

Hi A few minutes ago, I have uploaded the file "Friedrichstadt 014.JPG" which shows some traditional dancers.

Unfortunately I have forgotten to rename it. Now it is saved with a name, which may be confusing for other users.

How long is a piece of string?

A photo of mine has been tagged for deletion since 28 August 2007. How long is the "debate" suppose to go on for? There has been no post made since 27 September 2007. The debate has stalled. Can I remove the delete tag?
