How to upload a directory of files

I have generated a set of icons that can be used on blogs or especially to make stamps for Acrobat. I tried to UL the set as a zip file but WC can not accept zips/ How else can I upload a large set of smallish files?

You could upload them all individually (the best, maybe only option). You could also upload them with a bot, but you would probably need approval first. Cbrown1023 talk 00:30, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Everywhere you look (e.g. Commons:Welcome and Help:Contents, you find information on how to upload images. But it's virtually impossible to find information on how to locate an image for a particular purpose. It seems to me this is the more basic function, and should be made as straightforward as possible. Admittedly, the Main Page offers a few places to look, but it's useless unless your need happens to match one of the listed topics, which so far mine never have. I eventually found the question, "How can I search for images?" buried way down in the FAQ, but that wasn't any more helpful. I was hoping the "Category Tree" might show me the category structure, but it only works if you already know the name of the category you're looking for (!).

Bottom line, this wiki desperately needs tools for finding your way around. The obvious place to start would be a site map, linked in as many places as possible, including right after Welcome on the sidebar. This is a fantastic resource, but only if people can find what they're looking for.

We have the Mayflower search tool now, which is linked from the main Commons search page. It is far better when it comes to image searches and makes it easier to quickly find what you are looking for as it shows thumbs in the results. -- Editor at Large • talk 18:21, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Move image P1010118.JPG

Template for image from Presidential library

Template:PD-USGov-NARA has been proposed at deletion requests. How should I re-tag e.g. Image:Harry ca. 1897.jpg? The source link says "Restrictions: Unrestricted."[1]. I emailed the Truman library and the said, if the image is called unrestricted, it is definitely in the public domain. On other note, some of the pictures from the library homepage (see Harry S. Truman) have "Restrictions: Undetermined" e.g. Image:Trumanwhistlestop.jpg. About these, they told me "we have no information regarding photographer or ownership. We will provide the photograph to you, but you would use it at your own risk." I suppose these pictures should be speedy deleted? Vints 09:22, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Could you delete an image for me?

I uploaded an image DirectBandGap.svg but there was a problem with it but because I only just signed up0 with wouldn't let me replace it with a new version so I had to create DirectBandGap2.svg, could you delete the original please? Thanks, John

Please delete and rename

Image:Japan_Kamikouchi-Valley_Panorama.jpg was only a draft, I did a mistake in uploading it. The good image is Image:Japan_Kamikouchi-Valley_Panorama_Final.jpg Can someone delete the draft, and rename the final version (ie remove the useless "_Final"). Thanks.

Eh, uploading issues

I reside in east Africa and connect to the internet via a satellite with latency issues. As a result uploading is severally limited by the wiki-commons upload dialog box. I can, however, publish via an ftp server. I've uploaded an image to my website and now would like to import it to the commons. I recall that there was once away to upload from the web, but I have failed to find the way in the new dialog box. I'm a regular contributer and know the licensing procedures and am releasing the image under CC-SA-CR-2.5 (or some such abbreviation). Please advise. --Cody.Pope 08:22, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

SVG text help

I'm just beginning to learn Inkscape so that I can create SVGs for WP and COM. I just uploaded Image:Event-horizon-particle.svg, which was supposed to mirror WP's Image:Event-horizon-particle.png, but the text isn't showing up. I used a generic font (Times New Roman), so I thought it would be WP-compatable. Am I wrong? tiZom_(2¢) 21:46, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

copyright interpretation confusion

Have been directed to Wikipedia to find copyright free imagery jpegs to illustrate an academic paper at art school. The no copyright symbol is clear along with accompanying language. On images with Commons...it is about as clear as mud. Can you explain in simple plain En glish whether pictures falling under Wikipedia Commons rights may or may not be imported/copied for use for an academic paper for ahistory of architture class. Hello, C.Inayatullah! All images on Commons are free for any use, although some licenses require you to credit the original author. PD images are in the Public Domain, meaning you can use them for anything without any restrictions. There may be other variants and slightly different licenses, but in general images here are either free for use with no restrictions, or must be attributed. A few of the most common (but not the only) licenses are below:

Picture is size dependant

My friend JollyRoger uploaded a new picture which was intended to be a red V. However, to his surprise it looked like a blue V. I thought he had made an error, so I uploaded a picture myself. No difference. The problem was discovered my MdE: He rebuked me :( for uploading the wrong picture. He reverted to Jolly's version. No difference, of course.

In the meantime I discovered that the appearance of the picture depends on its size, as you can see here.

 Done MediaWiki doesn't create new thumbnails sometimes, and you need to &action=purge to try delete the old ones. That doesn't always work though, like was in this case. Another way is to get the url of the image in the size you are seeing the old thumbnail in, and then add something after the url, anything. That makes MediaWiki recreate the thumbnail and it will then be refreshed using the normal name, too. --Para 08:22, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll try to remember this. In NL I got a tip to use action=purge, but that didn't work. By 'old thumbnail' you probably mean 'wrong thumbnail' (since the very first upload was correct - it was just the display that was wrong). HandigeHarry 08:30, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

Neither method works with . But there is a difference here: the bright red picture is an older version. In the case of the red and blue V all versions were red, and I have no idea where the blue version came from. HandigeHarry 08:24, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

Need Help in uploading new version of map

Hello! I'm a newbie here, though not in the English language Wikipedia (there, I'm also The Ogre). So I still can't upload a new version of a previously exiting file. I need help. Bad files in preview and thumbnail

I can not understand why an image from en:Image:Orleand dot.png correctly uploaded in ca:Image:Orlenas dot.png when it is uploaded in commons Image:Orleans dot.png is only seen well in high resolution and not in preview nor in articles with thumbnails. The same problem happens with Image:Rouen dot.png, Image:Tours dot.png and Image:Catalunya+Comarques+English.jpg. --Vriullop 10:32, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

Photos of packaging for food, cosmetics, etc.

I'm wondering about taking photos of certain foods, still in their packaging, and uploading them. It seems that if if I take the food out of the packaging and then photograph it, there is no copyright to it, other than the copyright of my own photographing, which I can choose to release under whatever licence I choose. But if it's still in the packaging, does that make it fair use, like a book cover?

For example, if a particular brand makes cornflakes, and I pour the cornflakes into a bowl and then take a photo, I know that's okay. But what if I take a photo of the packet of cornflakes, and put it into the article for cornflakes and also the article for the particular brand.

An example would be this image of a container of Gillian McKeith's hemp seeds (which in turn contains a photo of McKeith). I wasn't thinking of downloading the image from that (or any) website and uploading it here. But I buy those hemp seeds regularly, and could take a photo of them. Such a photo could go into an article about hemp seeds, and into the section on the Gillian McKeith article that deals with McKeith products.

Another example would be this image of Bioforce propolis. I have a tube of it, and thought of asking a family member to take a photo of the tube with a tiny drop being squeezed onto my finger. It could go into the article about propolis, and the article about Bioforce (if there is one). I could give various other examples of foods, cosmetics, cleaning agents, etc.

I would only take and upload such photos if I were sure that I'm not in violation of Commons:Derivative works or something similar. I'm fairly certain I have seen such images in articles at en, with a gfdl or pd licence, but I know that people can innocently upload something with a free licence, thinking they have the right to do so when in fact they don't. It's borderline. Most commercial product are protected under protection of industrial property or trade mark and models, this is why for instance a car can be taken in photo without problem linked to artistic property rights. But just like book covers, packs design may be "artistic work" by themeselves. For instance, the first example you give clearly is "artistic", the second probably not. So the best policy is never to reproduce them without the right owner's authorisation. Michelet-密是力 18:14, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

Modern editions of 19th-century novels, with original drawings, or with facsimile of original title piece

I notice at en that a lot of articles about books have a fair use photo of the book cover. I imagine that if I owned a first edition of a 19th century classic like David Copperfield, Jane Eyre, etc. and scanned the title page, I could release it under a free licence if I chose to do so.

Sometimes some modern publisher (e.g. Oxford University Press) publishes a modern edition of an old classic, but keeps the original drawings (which may even be by the author, e.g. Thackeray), and/or has a facsimile of the original title page. If I own a modern edition of a book that was written in, say, 1812, can I scan the modern reproductions of the original title pages and of the original drawings and upload them under a free licence as if I had scanned it directly from an actual first edition? Thank you. I have taken photos of facsimiles of the title pages from original editions of Sense and Sensibility (1811) and Pride and Prejudice (1813). Both facsimiles were found in the modern Oxford University Press editions. I took photos with a camera rather than scanning them in the computer scanner, because opening the books completely flat, face down, and pressing on them with the scanner lid wouldn't have been good. (I don't consider that any expertise went into my photography, which reproduced Oxford's reproduction of the 19th century design.) I'll do the remaining Jane Austen novels later in the week. The first one, at least, is saved as a progressive JPG. This is known to cause thumbnail rendering to fail. Please save the files without progressive mode, and upload them again. thanks, pfctdayelise (说什么?) 04:08, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

Can we upload pictures published before 1923 in the United States?

I'd like to upload postcards that were copyrighted in the United States before 1923. Wikipedia allows this, but I don't see the same pull-down item on the upload page for Wikimedia Commons. (If I can upload postcards, I'll create galleries of old pictures on Wikimedia Commons.) So (1) can I do this or not, and (2) what justification do I use in uploading to Wikimedia Commons? Thanks! I've added the wording from the template at Wikipedia for pre-1923 copyrighted work, just cutting and pasting it from the Wikipedia explanation, which you can see if you follow the link to the duplicate Wikipedia picture page. Note that images are under different copyrights than text is. An image is, generally, copyrighted for 70 years after the death of the photographer; thus a picture taken in 1923 by someone who was 20 at the time means they may not have died until 1980 or 1990; that would make the photograph copyrighted until 2050 or 2060. Also, please do not copy text from licenses on the English wikipedia; we have different policies and a lot of their templates are not allowable here. I've taken down the template text from Wikipedia. I'm confused by your statement about images being under different copyright rules than texts. I've been looking around and I see no distinction between images and text in copyright law, at least in the United States before 1978. (see Commons:Licensing Country-specific laws section, United States section). Here's what I found at Commons:Licensing "Material in the public domain" section (paragraph 4):

"However, the year and location of publication is essential. In several countries, material published before a certain year is in the public domain. In the U.S. this date is January 1, 1923."

This article makes no distinction between postcards, photographs or text, so long as the material is published -- oh, I see there is a distinction in U.S. law, but only for later in the 20th century, not before 1923 (Commons:Licensing "Country-specific laws" section, "United States" subsection).

The same article (in the "Country-specific laws" section) states, "Images uploaded to Commons, unless uploaded from the United States, involve the interaction of two or more copyright jurisdictions." I take it that when I'm in the U.S. (and I am), and I'm taking postcard images from a Web site in the U.S. (and I am), of images published in the U.S. (and I am) that only U.S. copyright law applies. Please tell me if I'm on the wrong track here, or confirm for me that I'm on the right track and that I can upload pre-1923 postcards. I appreciate the help. Photographs from non-public places

(This went unanswered last time, so I'm taking the liberty to re-post.)

1. If a person takes a photograph in a non-public place despite not being allowed to do so, what is the status of the image? Does the photographer still own the copyright? Do other laws prevent the image from being used?
2. What constitutes a public place? Does it have to do with ownership?

Paul, I have taken photographs at a tennis tournament where I was only allowed to for "personal use". It's quite common. I think the situation is, as far as we're concerned you're welcome to upload them, but if our understanding of the law changes in the future, they may be deleted. But my impression is that breaking the terms of entry doesn't give them any control over my copyright, which comes from my creativity, not just the setting they provide me access to. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 01:27, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

0 byte uploads and SVG thumbnails

Hi... I'm trying to upload somg SVGs but it keeps giving me 0 byte files. I have to try 6-7 times before it works. Here are some samples: Image:Al-TableImage.svg, Image:Si-TableImage.svg, Image:Mg-TableImage.svg. The thumbnails, likewise, aren't generating properly either: [2]... any ideas? uploaded file with error

my display header got truncated, the actual svg has the correct proportions. How do I fix? (more specifically, swap out or overwrite the wrong version?)

Error when uploading

I keep getting the error of "Cannot find the server" when trying to upload a bundled .djvu file. Does anyone has any idea what the problem might be?--BirgitteSB 20:40, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

I got it to work with one play. Maybe the entire volume was too large a file. I am not sure which will end up being more useful but 3 volumes vs. 20+ plays is a lot more uploading :(--BirgitteSB 21:15, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Replace corrected image (new account)

I uploaded a corrected version of an SVG graph (with the width and height set so the preview is the right size), but can't overwrite the old one. If someone could move the new file: 10mb-emulab.svg to replace the old file: SET_10mb_emulab_graph.svg

Please move image to appropriate location

When I tried to upload it to replace the existing copy I got this message:

"A file with this name exists already. You can't upload a new version because your account is too new. Please go back and upload the file under a new name. Once you've done that, you can ask someone at the Help desk to move your file to the name you want."

So, I'm asking.

Heya. I uploaded the image:Robbery under arms.jpg after getting authorisation from the copyright holder. I have now edited this image and would like to upload that for use at wikipedia as well, but I'm not sure how I should do that in terms of filling out the upload info. Can someone help? Image has disappeared

On 2007-04-13, I uploaded several photos of tins of Keen's Mustard; I believe I did all of them with the same tags and categories, etc. One of them has since disppeared and I can find no trace of it. The missing Image:Keens-2007-113g-tin-front-10444CBB.jpg is needed on the Wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keen's. Can someone help me find out what happened to it, why it was deleted? Indeed, it was deleted ([3]). It's a picture of the front of a tin of mustard. It's a deriviative work of the undoubtedly copyrighted company logo and design. Commons only allows media under open content licenses. If you want to use it in Wikipedia, you'll need to upload it there with a fair use rationale. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 10:07, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

FYI, there is a job queue, and it's length is viewable in special:statistics. It shows the number of pages that should be updated (for example, the pages using templates to be regenerated). I think you must attribute authors of clipart. And if clipart images was copyrighted (for example came with Microsoft Office), image should be deleted. To be safe, you could try to find public domain images on http://openclipart.org/ (sorry, server currently down on maintenance). --EugeneZelenko 14:38, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

How to upload successfully?

This really drives me crazy. I uploaded the same pictures again, and again, and again, and again! And suddenly the result is how it should be. That's relieving. At this moment one single erroneous picture remains. I give up now.

I had a similar problem before. But there was a difference. This time the erroneous picture is an older version. The previous time all previous version were correct, and the erroneous picture was apparently a completely different picture.

That previous time the problem was solved by Para. He told me what the solution was, but he already solved it himself, so he gave me no opportunity to try it.

Para advised me to add something after the URL. Well, let's try this time! Alas, when I type "http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:BSicon_MWEXlfrfu.svganything" it replies that the URL is invalid.

And Bryan advised "http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/thumb.php?w=<width>&f=<BSicon_MWEXlfrfu.svg>". Invalid too.

You have to edit the URL of the thumbnail, not that of the image page. You'll know you're looking at the right thing when the word /thumb/ is in the URL. Let's hope nobody tries it before you do. --Para 15:08, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

What is the URL of the thumbnail? Whenever I click on something it starts downloading a PNG or an SVG. I inspected the HTML source file and searched for PNG.

I found http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e7/BSicon_MWEXlfrfu.svg/500px-BSicon_MWEXlfrfu.svg.png

I copied that to the address bar of the browser, typed some additional characters, and voilà! It worked! Should I repeat this for all sizes from 1px to 500px?

That's the one, you found it and fixed the problem. I did the same thing the last time. It doesn't need to be done for all sizes, only for the broken ones. Also, as thumbnails are only created when they are needed, requesting them for all possible sizes would be a waste. This shouldn't have to be done manually, but something is broken and we just don't know what it is. bugzilla:2888 is the place to work on it. Meanwhile, with Firefox it's easy to find the thumbnail URL, you can just right-click on an image and "Copy Image Location" (instead of the usual "Copy Link Location"). --Para 15:58, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

An ebay question

Anne Pratt was a famous botanical illustrator who died in 1893. She wrote and illustrated over 20 books. These are now being split up, and sold as individual prints on Ebay- and naturally they come with a jpeg illustration of the proposed print. I want one of her illustrations for her enWiki page. Morally, I have no problem with using any jpeg produced by book vandal but... what is the copyright status on Commons or enWiki of such a jpeg... and how would I tag it. Agree with Yonatan. I'd go for it and tag them PD-Art, just to drive home the Bridgeman reasoning in case the seller should ever complain. He's in the U.S. and has a ridiculous copyright notice on his private webpage, indicating that he mistakenly believes he had a copyright on these images. Procedure for renaming/replacing an image is as follows:

1. run checkusage on the original
2. Replace the old image with the new name wherever it is used (if this is on more than 10 pages you can post on Orgullobot's talk page with your request and an administrator will add the request)
3. Make sure all original and upload information is moved to the new image (like so)
4. Mark the original with {{duplicate|new name.jpg}}

Page and Category of the same name

Do a search for Kent- and you arrive at a page containing two galleries containing 4 images. It is in Category:Kent, with multiple subcategories and images. This is the location I want. Anyone doing a simple search will be disappointed. Am I right in thinking this is a remnant of former times? What the correct thing to do? Do I goto the 4 images and categorise them, then delete them from the galleries and transfer the heading task over to Category:Kent, and set up a redirect on Kent to Category:Kent, and hope that a friendly bot will notice, and erase the page? Am I right to suspect this 'feature' will occur for each of the English Counties.....

If I understand you right, you entered "Kent" in the field in the left column and then hit "enter" or clicked on "Go", right? And then you ended up on the page "Kent" - although that page is rather uninteresting because far more information is in the category of the same name, right?

Technically, that's no problem - you searched for a page, you got the page of the name. And no, please don't erase anything - it's completely okay to have pages within categories. (It's true that some pages are badly structured, but deleting them might still be a rather "hot" topic...)

That being said, I completely understand your frustration: While the software does what it's supposed to, this software is obviously designed for Wikipedias etc. in which pages not categories) are of primary concern. Given that that's different on the Commons, I agree that the situation is not satisfying. Question to all: Would it be possible (and desirable) to change the software so that categories are shown when you click on "Go"/"enter" - and pages are only shown in the general search (i.e. simply reversing the logarithm for pages and categories, or however a computer geek may say that :o))... ? I for my part would clearly support such a change: If a page exists within a category, it remains accessible. If only a category exists, that will be displayed. Someone's deleted the image Image:University of Virginia Cavalier mascot.jpg - unfortunately without ever informing the uploader (also known as me). So what's the matter? The deletion log says "derivative work". What's the derivative work? The image had a valid license (which had been verified at this very help desk), so I'm slightly confused about the entire affair. Problem when trying to log in

I can't log in to my account: when I try, I get the message that I've entered an incorrect password, although I use the same (and correct) password as I've allways used. I can't get a new password either since there is no e-mail address recorded for my username. How can I get a new password and keep my account (I don't want to open a new account)? Unable to upload images

I've not contributed to Wikipedia/Wikimedia before. I've tried on several occasions to upload my own photographs that I'd like to use to add to some Wikipedia pages. Despite following all instructions correctly as far as I can tell, I just get a never-ending 'hour glass equivalent' in my firefox browser after clicking upload until the page finaly goes completly blank. As far as I know, I haven't succesfully added a single image. I'e read all the existing FAQs that I've been able to find but have had no luck.

Thanks for your reply. I've just tried again with a 46kb .jpg file and the same thing happened - long delay and then a blank screen. Your choice of course, but are you sure this is a useful move? The name Image:Yellow-billed_stork_standing_2.jpg seems OK to me since the bird's name is hyphenated. In the category "Nativity scenes by country" there are 4 subcategories. They are for Nativity scenes of Germany, Italy, Poland, and Spain. Thank you for the reply. I read up on the sortkey and, unfortunately, the instructions are beyond my understanding. When uploading a picture, for a category I put in the category as you suggested. It did nothing to create a subcategory, however it placed the photo on the Nativity scenes by country page but there's no United States subcategory where the photo really should be. When I read the pages on creating a category, I can't figure how to work a subcategory into a category. Everything seems to reference making a category but the category already exists. Some words to let you know that {{Русский}} is deprecated. That is why it has the yellow background (and a tooltip text), in order to catch the attention if mistakenly used. All pages using it have now been checked and it should not be linked any more.

Please be careful if you use bots to replace deprecated language templates, as the text following the deprecated template should go inside the new template but has no formal/standard delimiter... :)

Template bug?

I found Image:Jamescromwell.jpg on en wiki [7]. I copied the template on there, {{CopyrightedFreeUse-Link|http://joshuapickering.com/}} but when the file was uploaded on here, instead of saying the courtesy link should be to joshuapickering.com, it says it should be to wikipedia. PD-old templates with different requirements here and at English Wikipedia

I'm confused by the fact that the {{PD-old}} template here at Commons says life of the author plus 70 years, whereas the same template at English Wikipedia says life of the author plus 100 years. It seems that if someone died in, say, 1934, you can just upload his work here and use it freely at en. The same applies to the {{PD-art}} template here and the same one at English Wikipedia. Copyright for book covers and title pages

I need some guidance about book covers and title pages. If copyright expires 70 (or 100? — see my question above) years after the author's death, that's easy to determine in the case of somebody writing a poem, or taking a photo, or making a drawing. But I imagine that the design of a book cover is usually attributed to the publishing house, rather than to a particular person, so how do we work out death plus 70 (or 100) years?

Also, with title pages, what is it that is copyrighted, assuming that there's no actual drawing? Is it the wording ("Emma: A Novel in three volumes by the author of Pride and Prejudice" etc.)? Or is it the design (lovely ornate, squiggly letters)?

The reason I ask is that I am working on the article Come Rack! Come Rope! at English Wikipedia. I have taken, but not uploaded, a photo of the book cover and one of the title page. The book was published in 1912, and my copy, which I photographed, is the first edition (British). The author died in 1914 (which partly explains my question above, as he's dead more than 70 years, but less than 100). The title page has no illustrations; it's just text, saying the name of the novel, the author, what else he wrote, who published it. It might be comparable to something like Image:Emma.jpg. The book cover is also free of illustrations — just a red hardback book with the title, author, and publisher in gold lettering. ElinorD 23:30, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Elinor, I would go ahead and upload it and tag it as {{PD-old}}. The title at least is a work of the author, and is PD since 1985. The UK has a copyright on typographical arrangement, but that runs out 25 years after the publication, so that's fine since 1937, assuming that "typographical arrangement" could even be protected back then. Simple answer. Go to Wikipedia (not commons).

In the search box- type the title- press go.

A page will come up saying that this title doesn't exist- and asks you if you wish to start one.

On the same page is an edit box- type the text in the edit box. Write a one line summary- press :Show preview. When you are happy. Press save page.

For images on Commons you use normal image code; for example, on the English wikipedia use the format [[Image:Image.jpg]]. If wikipedia has no image named "Image.jpg" it will default to the Commons image. This works on all projects.

The way to link to other project pages' vs. adding interwiki links to things is different. To link to an article on a wikipedia use the format [[w:this page]]; this sends the user to the article named, in their default language. To add an interwiki link use [[en:this page]] (replacing "en" with the language code you want). To link to a page on a specific language wikipedia, for example the German wikipedia, you use [[:de:this page]] (again replacing "de" with the language code you want). You can also use long formats; [[Wikipedia:this page]], [[Wikibooks:This Book]], etc.

When uploading the file under a new name you should provide a link to the original file as well as mentioning original author (e.g. by using a wikilink to his userpage). Ideally you would then put your own name and just put some brief summery of what you modified. So, basically, my questions are: Can I replace the svg images already uploaded?

Is there any copyright violation in the fact that that I vectorized and made some minor changes to Mr Gabino's original png file?

Would user Ysangkok have anything against me replacing his/her version of the coat of arms of Mexico?

Taking over an unused Username

Is it possible to take over username Daisy? My username on Czech Wikipedia is Sedmikráska, which means Daisy in English. I think Daisy is a better name then Sedmikraska (not a Czech word) or Sedmikráska (possible problems with an accent). User Daisy on Commons has added only 1 picture and he is inactive for more than 1 year.

Gallery policy

Nor am I, and I'm a bit frustrated these folks can't just give you a straight answer. What I would say is, because it would be pointless for galleries to duplicate categories (which they would if one merely put all of the images from the category into the gallery), galleries should ideally present the content in a way different from a category. One of my favorite galleries is Friedrich Kellner, which presents the images in a very aesthetically pleasing way. You should try to create them in a way that permits multilingualism (which the Wikimedia Commons is) (which that gallery is IMO not too great at), but let yourself be creative with them! They are supposed to be different than categories, so present them differently.  :-) --Iamunknown 23:38, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

No, you're only stepping into the biggest topic of debate Commons has ever had. There's discussion about it all the time, and people still prefer to do it in their own way, as was shown in this old vote. Any decision seems impossible. DjVu controls and page extraction

Hi, I uploaded my first DjVu image file (Image:On the expression of a number in the form 𝑎𝑥²+𝑏𝑦²+𝑐𝑧²+𝑑𝑢².djvu) yesterday and I can't seem to figure out how to enable all those DjVu controls. Furthermore, when I do page extraction (such as ), I always get "Error creating thumbnail". Do I just have to wait until all the image pages are generated in the commons image cache, or do I have to do something else? I intend to use this image together with ProofreadPage on the English Wikisource which doesn't work right now, probably for the same reason. Please, rename 2 files

Please someone rename these two files: Image:Klaipėda velŝipo 'Švyturys' 2.jpg and Image:Klaipėda velŝipo 'Švyturys' 1.jpg because they are incorrect. The name of the ship is 'Meridianas', not 'Švyturys'. "Švyturys" is the name of brewery which advertisement is on the sails.

Converting to SVG, method to follow.

Hello, in the next weeks I may convert a few images to SVG. I see there's a lot of work here. Opening a few images at random however I noticed some (most, really) are unused. What should I do with unused images? My approach would be to check their upload date and authors contribs and mark as delete if too old. What is the syntax to do that?

small preview image

I've uploaded my image and added links to it in some category pages and galleries... however, wherever it's posted, the small preview image won't show at all... just a blank box where it should be.. how come? Is there something extra that I'm not doing?. Besides, of all the pages where I posted a link to my image, only one shows at the links section of the page of my image... does it take some time to update or am I missing something again? If you have categoriesed it right (wich is [[Categorie:>>Whatever<<]]) then you should see your uploaded picture soon.

Sometimes it takes some time that you can see the image. If you can see your picture on the imagepage or when you click on the blue link below im sure you'll see your picture soon.

License tag categories

{{PD-self}}, {{PD-user}}, and similar tags like {{PD-user-en}} are not showing up in Category:License tags, although they do have the category link on their pages. Anyone else having this problem and/or know how to fix it? --Selket 16:11, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

External application edit

I'm trying to edit an image file with an external application, using the java version of the helper application (“XExternalEditor”). All seems to work normally, the helper application says that the upload was successful and yet the image didn't change. I'm running Firefox 2 on Windows XP Home. I was able to find out that the commons site sends some HTTP data back, which doesn't seem to be processed by XExternalHelper, though. Does anyone have an idea what my problem might be? Other text visible below picture than filename when picture refers to Category

To illustrate what I mean: on the page of Category:Deutzia you see media. One of these has as filename Ligustrum_vulgare01.jpg The image has nothing to do with Ligustrum, but is a Deutzia. Licensing for a rotated and cropped version of a CC-SA image?

Today I uploaded Image:2005 Evo at Deal's Gap 1.jpg and Image:2005 Evo at Deal's Gap 2.jpg. The photographer licensed the photos under Creative Commons Attribution Sharealike and proof of permission was forwarded to permissions@wikimedia.org. After some discussion at the w:Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution article we decided that a cropped and rotated version of one of these images should be used.

I'm not exactly sure how to set up the licensing for a cropped and rotated version of a CC-SA image, though. Am I the "author" of the cropped image? Should all author and licensing stuff remain exactly the same as in the originals, with just a "Cropped version of x" note in the description? I appreciate any advice.
