The Global Open Initiative Foundation (GOIF) in partnership with the Nubuke Foundation is excited to announce the launch of a new competition aimed at increasing the amount of content available on Wikimedia Commons. The competition is an opportunity for individuals to showcase their skills in creating and improving Wikipedia pages, Wikidata items, and multimedia content such as pictures, audios, and videos.

The competition is designed to encourage contributions from diverse backgrounds and regions, with the goal of promoting knowledge equity and inclusivity on Wikimedia Commons. Participants can submit their entries in various categories, including but not limited to, cultural heritage, natural landscapes, people, and events.

The collaboration between GOIF and Nubuke Foundation reinforces their shared commitment to promoting access to knowledge, education, and cultural heritage. The competition seeks to harness the power of collaboration and collective effort to build a more comprehensive and diverse collection of knowledge resources on Wikimedia Commons.

Participants will have the opportunity to showcase their creativity, knowledge, and passion for sharing knowledge with the world. Prizes will be awarded to the most outstanding contributors in various categories, including a grand prize for the overall winner.

We invite everyone to participate in this exciting competition and contribute to building a more diverse and inclusive knowledge commons.

Theme

The competition aims to increase the diversity of content on Wikimedia Commons by focusing on Ghana's cultural heritage, specifically the Northern region. The competition will focus on food, historical sites, weaves, nightlife, architecture, and more. The competition's theme promotes knowledge equity and inclusivity, and the collaboration between the two foundations reinforces their shared commitment to promoting access to knowledge, education, and cultural heritage.

Photo Contest

The competition is open to all individuals who are interested in contributing to Wikimedia Commons.

  • Participants must upload pictures, audios, or videos that have been renamed to Wikimedia commons.
  • All Entries must have categories:(Category:Arts and Culture in the Upper West Region) and another category related to the image
  • Participants may submit multiple entries, but each entry must be submitted separately, no duplication of a particular image
  • All entries must comply with Wikimedia Commons' licensing requirements and be released under a Creative *Commons license Share Alike.
  • Entries must be submitted by the specified deadline to be considered for the competition.
  • Winners will be selected based on the highest number of uploads with image caption, description and category.
  • Prizes will be awarded to the most outstanding contributors in various categories, including a grand prize for the overall winner.
  • Judges' decisions are final and cannot be appealed.

Steps to Upload Images

  • First download the images you like to upload.
  • Visit https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
  • Log in
  • Search for the title of the image you want to upload to be sure that image does not already exist.
  • Click on Upload from the menu on right hand or Upload file from the list on the left hand.
  • Select the image(s) you would like to upload
  • Click on Open
  • After the images have been loaded
  • click on continue
  • Select this file is not my own work

  • click on next
  • Enter a caption, and description
  • Enter the category: Arts and Culture in the Upper West Region and another category related to the image.
  • Click on Publish.
