Instructions...

Wanted categories: These are categories that one or more files have been placed in, but for which the category page itself has not been created and the category doesn't belong anywhere in the category hierarchy.

Not all of these categories necessarily should exist.

  • There may be another category with a synonym or an alternative spelling
  • There may be special naming conventions, such as Category:Düsseldorf, Germany instead of Category:Düsseldorf, or species names instead of common names for plants/animals
  • There may be a typo in the category name
  • The category may only contain copyright violations

Use User:Orgullobot/commands to redirect bad categories to their proper names. This is especially important if the category is likely to be recreated again (for example, common names, but not spelling mistakes). This can be used even if the category doesn't exist yet.

In these cases the category should also be created as either a soft or hard redirect. Hard redirect: #REDIRECT [[:category:good category name]] (note the leading colon :, to stop the bad category actually being listed in the good one)

Soft redirect: {{category redirect|good category name}} (note no leading Category: prefix).

If there is only a few files in the wanted category, they can also be changed by hand.

If these pictures actually belong in this category, use the CommonSense tool to make sure it doesn't exist under an alternate name.

If you conclude that the category is indeed needed, just start editing it. The Sum-It-Up tool can collect interwiki links and descriptions for you. (They may need trimming so as not to overwhelm the category page.) Place the category in a supercategory or parent category.

If you get stuck, skip the category or ask for help at theHelp desk.
