Category naming

[edit]

The preferred format for a category for an individual work of art would consist of the name of the work with the artist's name in parenthesis.

  • Format: "Category:<work name> (<artist name>)"
  • The work name is the full officially-given name of the work in its original language, or an appropriate commonly-recognized English translation as appropriate for the work (see category naming policy). The work name should not include quotes, brackets, or other such encapsulation. If the work name is not known, 'untitled' should be used.
  • The artist name is the full name of the artist. If the artist has a Commons category, this should be styled exactly the same as in that category name (see Universality Principle). If the artist is unknown 'anonymous' or 'unidentified artist' should be used.

In cases where the preferred format is insufficient to clearly identify the work, such as cases where the same artist has multiple works by the same name, additional disambiguation information needs to be added in the form of additional details about the work. This should include disambiguation not only from other works which have Commons categories, but any known existing works which may not yet have media or a category on Commons. Only enough additional information needs to be added to make non-ambiguous identification possible. These additional details are listed below in order of preference:

  • Medium: The medium of the work, such as painting, photograph, symphony, etc. The preposition "by" should be added between the medium and artist in the category name.
  • Year: The year the work was completed, or is otherwise associated with the work.
  • Collection: The place or organization currently or most recently in custody of or otherwise associated with the work. For some types of media, different entities may make sense. Paintings and other physical works may be associated with a museum or collection, performances may be associated with a location or tour, and published works may be associated with a publisher or library. Typically, the collection should be preceded by the preposition "in", though this can be changed based on the nature of the collection to ensure proper English reading of the category name.
  • ID/code: The authority identifier associated with the work, usually by the entity listed in the collection parameter.

These details should be added to the basic name in the following format:

  • Format: "Category:<work name> (<year> <medium> by <artist name>) in <collection> (ID/code)"

All new work categories should be named in accordance with this format. Existing work categories which do not comply with this format can be renamed in accordance with it, but this is not an immediate requirement and can be done as needed and as time and resources are available.
