Bot's tasks for which permission is being sought:
- Improve categorization of US Navy images uploaded by Multichill (see Commons:Batch uploading/Navy News Service, currently in subcategories of Special:Categories/Images from US Navy, location)
This by adding temporary categories based on the names of vessels and aircraft mentioned in the descriptions. The categories will be in a standardized form, e.g. Images from US Navy, craft <aircraft or watercraft name>. This should simplify dealing with categories such as Category:Images from US Navy, location ATLANTIC OCEAN. The corresponding names in descriptions would be wikified. The bot will deal with the images in the current temporary categories only. Afterwards, the temporary categories can be moved or merged into existing aircraft or ship based categories.

Discussion
- Good initiative. Please use names that are in relation with your user name or your other bot(s ?), such as category-bot. --Foroa (talk) 16:50, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
- I agree with Foroa here on the naming. ++Lar: t/c 20:37, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
- Any specific reason for this? The bot is meant to be specific to the Naval News project. I could have made an additional request for category-bot, but I think the edits are easier identify this way. -- User:Docu at 16:25, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
- Please make a test run. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:32, 27 October 2009 (UTC)
- Done. I used Category:Images from US Navy, location MEDITERRANEAN SEA. Prior to running it, I extended the list of ships with the one on Category talk:Auxiliary ships of the United States. Ships are identified most of the times. A difference in the use of "-" between WP and Commons was found, but this shouldn't be a problem in the future. Aircraft types were slightly extended compared to the list above, but still not all variations are captured. While I will add more, not all of them will be identified. The sample category doesn't include purely random images, but it did include images from different years. Overall, the result is consistent with what I expected. -- User:Docu at 15:25, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
- Forgot to switch back the config to category-bot. Please disregard the edits from earlier today. -- User:Docu at 12:41, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
