Bot's tasks for which permission is being sought: Category:Aviation files (check needed) has 155,301 total pages needing to be checked, I am looking to personally check these pages while running on my bot account for the purpose of not flooding recent changes. To further clarify, I would be further categorizing these pages while checking them when possible. The sockpuppets of Russavia have been replacing his personal user category with Category:Aviation files (check needed) resulting in tens of thousands of pages being added, the following is an example:Special:Contributions/Bharat_Rakshak_'16 (about 3k edits in 10 minutes).

Automatic or manually assisted: Manually assisted

Edit type (e.g. Continuous, daily, one time run): Continuous

Maximum edit rate (e.g. edits per minute): maxlag:5

Bot flag requested: (Y/N): No

Programming language(s): AWB, pywikipediabot if I have time.

Discussion

  •  Oppose As per message which has been left at User_talk:Riley_Huntley#File:Frola_77221_1177104297_.285746377934.29.jpg, Riley appears to simply be removing the category rather actually checking and categorising the images. This topic on Commons is very developed and there are around six categories which should be present on each aviation file. If they aren't present, they need to be created etc. This is not a job that can be done 100% with a bot; much less a bot job which will simply see the category being removed. Best leave this category to editors who deal with aviation files as their forte. 179.43.122.206 08:40, 5 February 2016 (UTC) The previous context has been striken, the IP has been globally locked by WMF as an open proxy and suspected sock of Russivia. • My personal contributions do not reflect what I am requesting for this task. I am asking for approval to do category additions and checks as you have mentioned. My personal contributions reflect me removing a category that was blankly added to the file at a rate of 50-100 edits per minute, resulting in 3300~ pages added to the category in less than 10 minutes (note: that is only one of many accounts) I will add that its not suspicious at all that a proxy is commenting on the mess Russavia has created. • Could you explain why you would change that or need a new bot for it? Uploads do not have to have a user category, forcing them remains controversial, and this is a poor way of tracking socking activity. Thanks -- (talk) 08:43, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I am looking to counter the backlog that Russavia has created, by one by one checking and categorizing the pages in the category he has backlogged. I am requesting to do this on my bot account so as not to flood recent changes when categorizing/checking five to ten pages per minute for a long period of time (we're talking about 150k of files here). Riley Huntley (talk) 08:48, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Rereading the request, I am unsure what the mass change is that you are suggesting. Are you adding a "Russavia" user category or removing it and categorizing these in some other way? Note that I'm doing something related with Faebot already, so it may be redundant. -- (talk) 08:53, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Russavia has already removed his user category on tens of thousands of pages, adding Category:Aviation files (check needed) in it's place. I am wanting to one by one, go through Category:Aviation files (check needed) and remove the files from that category, while also further categorizing the files in question. I have attempted to start discussion on the VP in likely what you have already started with Faebot, I don't see where you have gotten approval for this though. Riley Huntley (talk) 09:00, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
As below, removing the maintenance category and adding sensible categories is something you can do without specific bot approval. You may want to consider requesting a more generic change to your bot scope as I have with Faebot, so that the types of mass categorization to improve batch uploads is covered. Housekeeping of this type (equivalent to what many people do with VFC) should not need special requests each time. If the changes are controversial, that's a different issue and adding or removing user categories should normally imply the agreement of the users; though with the recent WMF threat to block anyone 'assisting' an office locked user, it's unclear whether we are free to do this without WMF permission when locked accounts are involved. -- (talk) 09:13, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Commons:Bots#Permission_to run a bot says otherwise.. Riley Huntley (talk) 09:17, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't see why categorizing qualify for bot flag, as they require human intelligence, thus need manual rechecking. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 09:05, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I haven't checked everything out yet, just seen you remove these categories and not adding any categories, which is only one of the many reasons for an image to be in the tracking category; it may be in there because it needs renaming, or date checking or a lot of things. It is not just ment to be "looked at" then remove the cat. This is really nothing you should do with a bot...Josve05a (talk) 09:28, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    • I see you did not take the time to read above, so I will copy this from above "My personal contributions do not reflect what I am requesting for this task. I am asking for approval to do category additions and checks as you have mentioned. My personal contributions only reflect me removing a category that was blankly added to the file at a rate of 50-100 edits per minute, resulting in 3300~ pages added to the category in less than 10 minutes" Riley Huntley (talk) 09:29, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Withdrawn

I am withdrawing this request after receiving off-wiki personal attacks, while I am not one to back down, I have better things to do than be targeted. I'll cleanup in other areas, away from Russavia. Riley Huntley (talk) 10:06, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
