Bot's tasks for which permission is being sought:
- Copy data from English Wikipedia graphs and tables like en:Template:2019–20_coronavirus_pandemic_data/Canada/Quebec_medical_cases_chart to structured data like Data:COVID-19/Cases/CA-QC.tab. I expect to have one Data: page per country (~200) and US state (~50) and Canadian province (13). Depending on how useful the data is, I may expand it to cover US counties, other sub-national regions, down to cities.
Automatic or manually assisted:
- Run supervised (by me)
Edit type (e.g. Continuous, daily, one time run):
- Daily
Maximum edit rate (e.g. edits per minute):
- 1 edit/minute
Bot flag requested: (Y/N):
- Y (It might not be necessary at this rate of editing...?)

Discussion
- Hi. I'm Evan Prodromou, long-time Wikimedia contributor and product manager for APIs at Wikimedia Foundation. This bot is not part of my paid work at WMF. My goal is to get at least some of the huge corpus of data stored in graphs and tables on English Wikipedia into a structured JSON format that can be re-used by other Wikipedias as well as by third party developers. I realise that the Data: namespace is controversial for structured data, but in talking with Wikidata developers and PMs, it seems like WD is not great for tabular data, so the Data: namespace is the "least bad" place to put it. If after this bot runs the Commons community decides not to keep the data files, I can commit to cleaning them up. --EvanProdromou (talk) 19:14, 30 March 2020 (UTC)
- Support Leave it to Evan's judgement as to the value of having a bot account to do anything they feel is appropriate within Commons' scope. --Fæ (talk) 10:25, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
- Please make a test run. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:29, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
- OK, first step was actually to make a map from the Johns Hopkins dataset. See File:Covid19DataBot-Case-Data-World.svg. --EvanProdromou (talk) 18:57, 6 April 2020 (UTC)
- Please teach bot how to add description and license during upload. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:27, 7 April 2020 (UTC)
- Agree with eugeneZelenko. As the map (especially the color coding) is not self-explanatory, a proper description should be added. Preferrably with the Information template. --Schlurcher (talk) 11:36, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- By the word, why not to upload tabular data and use MediaWiki graph for map? --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:04, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
