Discussion for improving coverage of Louisiana topics on Wikimedia Commons

History by Parish

We've recently been improving coverage by place/time with subcategories in Category:History of Louisiana by parish. More work to be done in creating "by decade" subcategories for many parishes. Year categories are sometimes useful as well for more recent years, when we have a fair number of images or media to populate such categories (unfortunately our coverage of some parishes is still rather poor). I would like to focus on the categories in each parish, so they're more standardized. For example, this will make it easier to detail the history of each parish. It will also make commons easier to navigate and less cluttered. Spatms (talk) 23:29, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

Orleans Parish

I'd like to remind folks that Orleans Parish is legally the same as the city of New Orleans. Many aspects of the city are already fairly well categorized, so I think making redirects is generally better than making redundant categories (eg, "Category:Such-and-so in Orleans Parish, Louisiana" being a redirect to existing "Category:Such-and-so in New Orleans"). -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 17:43, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

East Baton Rouge Parish decades

As part of expanding categorization of history by parish, I've made a start on Category:East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana by decade. I'm wondering how best to deal with Baton Rouge by decade. Certainly each Baton Rouge decade is a subcategory of East Baton Rouge Parish decade. At present Baton Rouge decades are subcategories of Louisiana by decade. As Baton Rouge is the state capital and a major city of the state, I am wary of "hiding" it only in the Parish category. Users from other places may know that Baton Rouge is in Louisiana but not what parish it is in - and this issue will increase when we get to smaller cities like Shreveport, Monroe, etc. Possibilities: Have "Baton Rouge in (decade)" categories in both the "East Baton Rouge Parish in (decade)" and "Louisiana in (decade)" categories - technically redundant. Or create a new "Cities in Louisiana by decade" category to enhance navigation by city. I notice there is a Category:Cities in California by decade, though at present it seems the only US state to do that, and it only categorizes cities by name, not by the decade themselves. I've gone ahead and added East Baton Rouge Parish Louisiana decade categories to Baton Rouge decade categories back to the 1860s, without removing the Louisiana decade categories. Per above, I'm not sure if this is the best solution, but pending other suggestions or creation of cities in Louisiana by decade category tree, seems appropriate for the short term at least. Alexandria, Louisiana on the other hand only had decade categories for the 3 decades of the 21st century; I moved them from the Louisiana by decade categories into the Category:Rapides Parish, Louisiana by decade categories -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 18:20, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
