Sub-categories within "Western Ghats"

[edit]

Hi, the following sub-categories have been established, to reduce the large number of categories (as of March 17, 2012) listed at the 'Western Ghat' main level:

Please feel free to refine, Roland 21:49, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

as per category tree Category:Western Ghats, ref en:Western Ghats, restored Animalia-related parental categories relating to Category:Goa, Category:Karnataka, Category:Kerala, Category:Maharashtra, Category:Tamil Nadu, as established years ago, and for the reason that the Western Ghats are spreading about large areas of these states, hence, categorizing is adequate and user-friendly, Roland zh (talk) 18:31, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

== Your India-related edits == Hi Roland zh,
* About this edit and similar ones, I thought my edit message was clear. Since the Western Ghats span across multiple states, Category:Lepidoptera of the Western Ghats cannot be a subcategory of any "Lepidoptera of [state name]". This is just not how categorization works. The proper thing to do is to categorize relevant districts into Category:Lepidoptera of the Western Ghats, as you did. Please revert your last edits.
* About that edit and similar ones, unless I am missing something, the Mudumalai National Park is located in Nilgiri district only. And if this were not true, we would fall back to the previous point.

Hi, my opinion was pointed before and practiced that way nearly a decade, this is just not how categorization worked fine by February 2018 ;-) best, Roland zh (talk) 01:42, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: see also Category Talk:Mudumalai National Park ref EN-WP and ...shares its boundaries with the states of Karnataka and Kerala... as per official website. before, I also set a link to this talk.  Question: are there opinions of South India-interested Wikimedians to discuss at this talk and to find a consensus ? thx and bye, Roland zh (talk) 02:17, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Roland zh:
First, moving my message away from your talk page was not necessary, and I wish you had at least told me where you had moved it, instead of having me search for this page in your contribution history... :-/
  • About my first point (subcategories of Western Ghats):
    • I am sorry but this is really not how categorization works. You are thinking backwards here: even in a case where the Western Ghats were to completely encompass a state, the state category would have to be in the Western Ghats category, and definitely not the opposite. The fact that you introduced this mistake a decade ago is by no means a reason to keep it. The edit history shows that other users have tried to make the correction over the years (which you already reverted), so it seems clear what others think.
    • To still make connections between Western Ghats categories and state categories, an elegant thing you can do is to use Template:Cat see also on each side. I have just put one such template in Category:Western Ghats as an example for you.
  • About my second point (Mudumalai National Park): are you sure you understand what "sharing boundaries" means? It implies that the Park is adjacent to these states, and therefore does not overlaps with them.
Please be reasonable about these edits: errare humanum est, perseverare diabolicum. ;-) --LamBoet (talk) 01:24, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
