We don't need categories for every shade of blue. e.g.Blue, Navy blue, Sky blue, Slate blue, etc. To avoid confusion and debate about what shade of blue a given stamp is, categories should be general, which is the purpose of a category. i.e.Grouping images under a common and general theme. -- Gwillhickers (talk) 15:30, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I tend to disagree. This reasoning does not seem to accept the basic concept of Parent cat and subcategories. Categories are not just 'key words' which can be combined in order to reduce the number of results. I work a lot on paintings etc, where you can see the need and interest of subcats. There are difficult cases, I agree, then they remain in the parent cat. But ultramarine is precisely a very distinct shade for German and French catalogs. I refer also to my work on shades galleries. I regret the loss of added value (now the ultramarine stamps are merged with all blue ones).
An alternative is to maintain blue cat (as you wish) and the subcats (to record added value), but this is against usual Wikimedia policy.
