Hello! I noticed you renamed this category. The issue is that the tracking it deals with can be more than simply imaging or technology, and might including IR heat, radar, even human eyeballs. I would suggest something a little more broad, such as Category:Tracking (positioning) or something similar. Thoughts? Huntster (t @ c) 14:04, 28 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Huntster,
The thing is all of those technologies (even images from IR, human eyeballs tracking) still depend on basic image recognition, where simple image should be processed somehow. It's not limited to digital images only. For example, for eye tracking the device will read an image of the eye to make an assumption of the direction where it is looking.
The only category that should be separated is radar tracking. It's just a radar technology and have nothing to do with tracking per se. VoidWanderer (talk) 14:18, 28 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And Category:Tracking (positioning) would be way too broad and would join together not related topics. I've intentionally extracted Category:Tracking (logistics), because GPS or barcode post tracking has really nothing in common with image recognition. If that's how you're trying to define it's use, then okay, but I would suggest writing a description for the category to give users an idea of what should be included. It also raises the question for me about what to do with Category:Tracking ships; while occasionally there may be an optical/imaging component on board, they are primarily involved in tracking via electromagnetic signals. Changing the usage of this category also makes me think it should be de-coupled from the much broader en.wiki category, since they're not remotely one-to-one anymore. It's not about the use, it's about the nature of the phenomenon.
Yes, I believe Category:Tracking ships is categorized mistakenly now. They have more in common with Category:Airborne early warning aircraft than some image recognition device, so they should be categorized as Category:Military radars. VoidWanderer (talk) 14:41, 28 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I mean, it was moved from Category:Tracking, changing its use from broader to narrower, that's what I mean. As for the Tracking ships, I wish there was a more appropriate category but that will have to do. Thanks for the discussion. Huntster (t @ c) 14:56, 28 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I've made some changes to Category:Tracking and Category:Tracking ships to make a clear distinction and better categorization. VoidWanderer (talk) 14:59, 28 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
