The name is illegitime and should not be used. These plants belong to Echinofossulocactus.

A proposal by Hunt (1980) to relectotype the genus with Echinocactus helophorus Lem. has been declined to recommend conservation by the Spermatophyta Committee (Brummitt 1987). Tjaden (1982) proposed to conserve Stenocactus over Echinofossulocactus. The proposal was rejected by the Spermatophyta Committee (Brummitt 1987).
