Decision to move this

In literally every other case where a Seattle park and a neighborhood share a name, the neighborhood category has the form Category:FOO Park, Seattle, Washington. Here, uniquely, the category of that form is a disambiguation. I see no reason this should be handled differently than all other parallel cases. Jmabel ! talk 19:43, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I moved the category and created the disambiguation page because I had to categorize images of the park. With cat-a-lot it was unclear where the images should go. The previous categorization requires contributors to have knowledge of the confusing (IMO) format, while it is now clear what is the park and what is the neighborhood.
At the same time I am not expecting that I will spend a lot of time in Seattle-related categories and am ok to revert. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 21:05, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I believe that the current naming system for neighborhoods and parks in Seattle does not follow the Selectivity Principle of Commons:Categories: "The category name should be unambiguous and not homonymous."
Here is the current state of categories and parks in Seattle:
Neighborhood Park
Category:Madison Park, Seattle, Washington Category:Madison Park (Seattle, Washington)‎
Category:Seward Park (neighborhood) Category:Seward Park
As shown by the Madison Park example, the category name is ambiguous. In my opinion it's worth it to make an exception for these 2 cases and rename Madison Park to a pattern similar to the move I've done for Seward Park. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 15:55, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I asked Another Believer (creator of Category:Madison Park (Seattle, Washington)) and Mackensen (creator of Category:Neighborhoods in Seattle) for feedback. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 16:16, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
When there are two closely related categories with similar names (like a neighborhood and a park it is named after), we normally use {{See also cat}} or {{Distinguish}}. Category:Seward Park (and for that matter Category:Madison Park) should probably become disambiguations, but I still don't see a good reason to break the pattern of naming Seattle neighborhoods. (The park itself can to at Category:Seward Park (Seattle park).) - Jmabel ! talk 19:10, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If something has "Park" in its name, then most people are going to assume that it's a park, not a neighborhood. Which is why I elected to go for Category:Seward Park (neighborhood) over Category:Seward Park (Seattle park). Cryptic-waveform (talk) 19:30, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There are a few miscategorized images in Category:Seward Park (neighborhood) which further supports my opinion. The beauty of matching names should not prevail over descriptive names which allow for easy and correct categorization. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 19:44, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I fail to see how it supports your point. Could you clarify? It seems to me that "Seward Park (neighborhood)" is liable to attract wildly miscategorized images from New York or Chicago, rather than mildly miscategorized images from the part proper, up one level from their ideal category. - Jmabel ! talk 22:44, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You do see my point since you recognize that images of the park are miscategorized in the neighborhood category. Is there a neighborhood called Seward Park in New York or Chicago? My research shows me that it's not the case. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 23:57, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm honestly not sure how much "Seward Park" in NYC gets used for the area surrounding the park. That doesn't tend to be done much in Manhattan, except for Gramercy Park. There's a " Seward Park Extension Urban Renewal Area" ([1]), a Seward Park Library ([2]), a Seward Park Cooperative ([3]), and even a ([Seward Park Campus]), but I think those are just near the park and individually named after it, rather than anyone calling the neighborhood that. For Chicago, I think not even that. - Jmabel ! talk 02:36, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In any case I see your point that Category:Seward Park should probably be renamed to make it clear that this is Seward Park in Seattle. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 03:11, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Cryptic-waveform: I suggest

Neighborhood Park Disambiguation (& not just Seattle)
Category:Madison Park, Seattle, Washington Category:Madison Park (Seattle park)‎ Category:Madison Park
Category:Seward Park, Seattle, Washington Category:Seward Park (Seattle park)‎ Category:Seward Park

Is that acceptable? - Jmabel ! talk 04:05, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

White I still believe that having neighborhood in the title is better, I think your solution is OK and will decrease miscategorization. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 13:41, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Let me know if you want to make the changes. Otherwise I can make them. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 13:42, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'll do it.

Looks like we have agreement (the last chart here); I'll go ahead with this. - Jmabel ! talk 19:47, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
