Can you please explain why you decided to remove Category:Sailing ships in paintings out of Category:Ships under sail in this edit? All the paintings show "ships under sail". - Takeaway (talk) 01:57, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
- You apparently found one file which had been wrongly categorised as happens in all categories. Perhaps some text clarifying the intention of the category would be in place? Something along the lines of "This category contains images of paintings of ships under sail"? - Takeaway (talk) 15:22, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
- Then we probably would have to create a category for paintings of sailing ships without set sails. Paintings like the linked one are quite common. Why not let the existing category contain what its name describes. You could put a {{Cat see also}} in Ships under sail. --LPfi (talk) 16:40, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
- It would perhaps be better to create a category Category:Ships under sail in paintings as a subcategory of both Category:Sailing ships in paintings and Category:Ships under sail for the vast amount of images showing just that. This would eliminate the confusion as to what "Sailing ships in paintings" actually should contain: Ships sailing (and thus under sail) or "sailing ships" as a class of ships. - Takeaway (talk) 17:52, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

- As we do have a category Category:Sailing ships, its subcategory Category:Sailing ships in paintings should be including paintings of anything that could be in one of the other subcategories of Category:Sailing ships.
- Category:Ships under sail on the other hand is meant to include ships with sails set. If you look through the subcategories of Category:Tall ships, you will notice that we have an incredible amount of images of ships in ports.
- I don't think it matters that some images are in both Category:Sailing ships in paintings and Category:Ships under sail. It's common that various aspects of images are categorized.
- As the focus of Category:Ships under sail is on set sails, there might be a few better topical distinctions about sail than merely the medium reproducing the image. -- Docu at 19:01, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
