Description

[edit]

The description is very limiting, see en:Talk:Signaculum#Split? for some details. In particular, the current description makes it impossible to place File:Signaculum PRIMIT (Louvre, Br 4035).jpg into this category. Викидим (talk) 16:39, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have failed to find a single (!) peer-reviewed reference that says that signaculum = grave marker. The Christian Latin meaning is a "sign", typical research literature uses "signacula" to describe either commercial stamps or military dog tags of Ancient Rome. Seems like a mistake based on the Italian "Segnacolo tombale/funebre". I propose renaming this category into Category:Roman grave markers. Викидим (talk) 20:46, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that Signacula shouldn't be used for the grave markers, and there are at least two actual signacula on Commons. Signacula used correctly should be a subcat of "Ancient Roman stamps". But there must be some other term for the grave markers because of their specific shape. I don't think Roman grave markers is the best name for these because it's too broad, but at the moment I don't have a suggestion. Cynwolfe (talk) 14:01, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, I just (literally minutes ago) submitted a category rename request. If you have an objection, please let me know, and I will withdraw my request from the processing (the queue is pretty long, so we have time). Викидим (talk) 19:46, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
