'Rape' in the sense of 'abduction'

[edit]

Category:Rape (abduction) in Greek mythology was created in order to remove the files from Category:Rape and, this for two reasons. The first was that from the point of view of iconography, the works of art, represented in the files, do not depict an act of rape. Secondly, the archaic meaning of the word ‘rape,’ which is contained in the titles of the works, is the abduction of a woman, especially for the purpose of having sexual intercourse with her.--Thorvaldsson (talk) 13:22, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting (if one is allowed to say) distinction. If I understand right, rape thus did not mean the sexual violation, but the kidnapping, and only in later times became a word for the sexual violation as well.
In any case weak support for the move. Weak because I really dislike "and/or" type categories. They create absolute total headaches if you later on have to split them after all. Ingolfson (talk) 06:40, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In fact, the word "abduction" is ambiguous and is sometimes used as euphemism for "rape". But sometimes not: see e.g. Category:Abduction of Helen. It is really an abduction, there is no rape at all in this case. So "Rape (abduction)" does not sound appropriate for this kind of event. Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 11:52, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
