Sagrada familia

[edit]

Most photos in this category are of the Sagrada Familia model and should be moved or category renamed. Викидим (talk) 01:08, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Agreed. Move them to a new cat. Is "Polyfunicular hanging model" the best name though? It's not very recognisable for what it is. Andy Dingley (talk) 11:50, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I dug deeper, and am not so sure anymore, alas. See Tomlow, Jos (2011). "Gaudí's reluctant attitude towards the inverted catenary". Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Engineering History and Heritage 164 (4): 219–233. DOI:10.1680/ehah.2011.164.4.219. ISSN 1757-9430. on page 219: Gaudi also made a second, smaller hanging model [of Colonia Guell church], kept in cupboard in the Sagrada Familia workshop, which was intended — in the words of Josep Rafols — for ‘a church design’ [...] This small hanging model is often erroneously referred to as a design for the Sagrada Familia.
So it seems that I was wrong, but this might be useful comment for the category. The better name would be "hanging chain model", as the researchers usually call this contraption (they also use "hanging model", cf. Tomlow above, but the murderous connotations are too much for me here). Викидим (talk) 04:15, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'd be concerned about 'catenary' and 'hanging chain' models. AFAIK, these models are definitely not that. Nor are they modelling structures which can be represented as that.
Chains are heavy. These models are made from string, weighted with bags. They use the 'light, inextensible string' beloved of applied mathematics theory. The shape in which a heavy chain hangs is a catenary, and it's different from the shape of a light string weighted with a bag at one point (enough that this would matter for such models).
