Some additional information

[edit]

I write here some information directly from Nicola Piegaja. They might be useful in the future if somebody wants to create the full family tree with external sources.

  • The name Piegaja comes from Piegaio, hamlet near Pescaglia.
  • The form "Piegaia" is a mistake that occurred when the family moved to Pisa, a different state at the time. Currently, the two owners of the hotel have names with different spellings because Nicola changed it back, but his brother did not.
  • Pasquale Piegaja was the first owner but he had no son, the hotel was inherited by Domenico, son of his brother.
  • The three Marchisini sisters were part of a family of Counts who was related to the Feroni family, owner of a jewelry shop in Ponte Vecchio. They were named Ida, Mary (Maria), and Emma.
  • Mary Marchesini was the mother of Odoardo Spadaro
  • Ida Marchesini was a sculptress and created the daisy-shaped button pushed by queen Margherita of Savoy at the final inauguration of the facade of the Duomo of Florence.
  • Anna Maria Gelli-Marchesini, the grand-mother of the current owner Nicola, was born outside of wedlock from Ida Marchesini and Odoardo Gelli. She got a nobilty title from her friendship with the secretary of the house of Savoy, Count Raimondo Olivieri. His father Gelli was an official painter of the House, until he was asked by the King to make a portrait of a bastard son and the queen subsequently cut all ties. Anna Maria lived close to the Piegaja family because his father was away for work and as a result she married Andrea Piegaja, the son of the owner of the hotel.
  • Andrea Piegaja was very active in the Pisan social scene, founder of the Canottieri Arno Rowing Club, and member of the Italian Liberal Party. He was elected as town councilor. He died in the 1970s.
  • His son Domenico "Nico" Piegaja inherited the hotel. He died in 1998, but in 1989/1990 his sons Andrea, Maurizio e Nicola started to manage the hotel.
  • The mother of Nicola, current co-owner of the hotel, was Sheilla Mary Foster. and she was British with an Irish Catholic heritage. The Foster family comes from the Liverpool area and they were nine brothers, the father of Sheilla married one of the eight sisters of the Twist family. One of the family was an important seed vendor in northern UK. Some of the sibling of Sheilla were Jeffrey Joseph, Beatrice Mary (jornalist and later enclosed nun.) and Patricia Mary (a pianist)
  • The brothers of the current generation are Nicola, Maurizio and Andrea, who is not involved with the hotel. Nicola is the former president of Gioco del Ponte--Alexmar983 (talk) 19:06, 15 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
