Recategorizing

[edit]

I am recategorizing everything in "Piano" to "Pianos." The categories were originally intended to be that "Piano" was "for files related to pianos," while "Pianos" was intended "for photos/media of pianos." I think that any files or categories "related to pianos" which don't already fit in one of the existing subcategories can easily have a new subcategory created as appropriate.

Although there may be an arguable difference between "Piano" and "Pianos" as categories, it is non-obvious, as evidenced by the fact that there were 350 files in the "Piano" category, almost all of which needed to be recategorized into a subcategory of "Pianos," while there were only 272 files in "Pianos" (most of which also needed to be sub-categorized), indicating that the distinction between "Piano" and "Pianos" is not working. People appear to put their files in the first category that comes up, and/or don't understand what the distinction is and decide to leave it to an expert to sort out.

Almost all other instrument categories (as well as all other sorts of categories) use the plural form of the word. Indeed, the plural form appears to be the standard usage across Commons. I think that the usage of the singular here (and also in the Harpsichord/Harpsichord categories) as a parent category is confusing, counter-intuitive, and unnecessary. Changing it to harmonize with other instrument categories (as well as all other categories) will thus improve consistency and usability, and hopefully make it easier for non-experts to subcategorize their files more appropriately..

If I've stepped on any toes I apologize. Laura1822 (talk) 18:00, 8 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
