Useless category

[edit]

I recognize the value of category:videos of dance because it covers a small subset of dance-related files and a minority media type. However, the same cannot be said for cat:photographs_of_dance because a great majority of dance files are photos, and consequently it seems pointless to even have such a category.

It's extremely unlikely that someone would search for just photos of dance when photos are by far the predominant media type. I think most editors recognize this, which is why the category contains relatively few dance photos (it would be a monumental task to add hundreds of thousands of photos to this category and there seems to be no logical reason for doing so).

As things stand now there is little value in a category that purports to contain all dance photos when it actually covers only a tiny fraction of them. And even if editors invest the time and effort needed to properly build out the category, it would still have little value because it would largely overlap Category:Dance.

Since it serves no useful purpose there, I've removed this cat from cat:dance. I've left this cat in cat:photographs for the time being, but if it's deemed useless there too, perhaps it should be deleted. Lambtron (talk) 17:02, 17 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Fleur-de-farine: , you still have not explained why Category:Photographs of dance serves any useful purpose or would be of value to anyone. Nevertheless, you seem determined to keep it anyway, so I've moved it to the new Category:Dance by media type to prevent it from being a direct child of Category:Dance.
