Hi, i'm not sure if all those sub cats are needed after the top one (). Most of them seem actiually redundant and to be removed, since they seem to double and triple what already should have been stated in higher cats. But I'm not sure how to work this template and what's the use of doing it this way and not by using the hotcat extention. Peli (talk) 22:56, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that there's no cat existing for "1963 in Hengelo". If there was, that would take over 3 of them. Andy Dingley (talk) 01:45, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I made the Category branch manually but it does not solve the doubles. The dubious cat name to start with "Photographs by Gerard Dukker in Hengelo (1963)" in stead of "... in Hengelo, Gelderland (1963)" might be the issue. Peli (talk) 02:43, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
But it's not called "Hengelo, Gelderland". It's called "Hengelo" - "Gelderland" is a disambiguator.
There's some duplication here at present because this is the only category for Hengelo. If there were multiple years, then this category would (automatically) only have parent cats for the dated region cats, and the undated cats would just be parents of the undated Hengelo cat. As it is, that is indeed a lot of cats here - buth they're needed, so that this cat appears correctly in all of the parent cats it needs to. It's not only the Hengelo cat for 1963 (appearing in both the Gelderland and Netherlands cats), it's also acting as the overall Hengelo cat for the Gelderland and Hengelo cats. If it doesn't appear there, navigation breaks down because a browsing reader can't find Hengelo from scratch without knowing which year the photographs were taken in.
