The difference between Phoenician coinage and Punic coins

[edit]

DenghiùComm, there is a different between Phoenicians in general and Punics, which are the western late branch of them. There is a need, if only for the easy navagation, in a category which will unite all of the Phoenician coins - those of Phoenicia, those of Cyprus (which are not Punic; for example, this one) and those of the western overseas Phoenicians, the Punics. פעמי-עליון (talk) 22:17, 15 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I know the difference between Phoenician and Punic. I made a mistake. Sorry. Best regards. --DenghiùComm (talk) 04:27, 16 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
DenghiùComm, that's okay, Thank you. May I restore the Category? פעמי-עליון (talk) 13:43, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No please. We cannot have redundant categories. Thank you. Best regards. --DenghiùComm (talk) 02:59, 20 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
DenghiùComm, as I said, there is a need in a category which unites the coinage of Phoenicia, the coinage of non-Punic Phoenicians over the see (like in Cyprus) and the coinage of the Punics. Categorizing Phoenician coin from Cyprus in "coins of Phoenicia" is simply wrong - Cyprus is not in Phoenicia, but Cyprus Phoenicians were not Punic. פעמי-עליון (talk) 13:14, 20 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I get what you mean. But at the moment we don't have any category of Phoenician coins of Cyprus. --DenghiùComm (talk) 04:24, 21 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
DenghiùComm, I can create this category; If I do so, can I put it with the coins of Phoenicia category and the Punic coins category under the Phoenician coinage category? Even if we have a category for everykindofPhoenician coins, we need an umbrella category for all the kinds, like Category:Greek coins. פעמי-עליון (talk) 08:48, 21 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

So, I changed the "Category:Phoenician coinage" in the "Category:Phoenician currency", because that is non-standard, as this type of names are not accepted in Commons (there are no "French coins" or "Italian coinage" but always "Coins of France", "Coins of Italy"). So the correct form is "Coins of Phoenicia". But for our problem of distinguishing the coins of the region Phoenicia from those of other regions of the Mediterranean created by the Phoenicians, I have made this mother-category in which there are the sub-categories of the "coins of Phoenicia" and that of the "Punic coins". Now you can add the "Category:Phoenician coins of Cyprus". I hope the problems are resolved now. Best wishes DenghiùComm (talk) 20:47, 21 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you DenghiùComm! I think the problems are solved. I just want to note that the difference between "Coins of Phoenicia" and "Coins of France" is that France is a region as well as a state, while Phoenicia was, sadly, only a region. I also think that in the ancient world context, "coins" or "coinage" would be more accurate (this is the common professional term, as you can see in Category:Greek coins and Category:Ancient Roman coins, which are exception of the standard you mentioned). This is not critical, but if I convinced you, I think "Category:Phoenician coinage" or even "Category:coins of the Phoenicians"/"Category:coins of Phoenicians" can be an even better solution. If you are not convince, that OK, I'm not fully satisfied with the name but I can live with it :) פעמי-עליון (talk) 22:44, 21 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. For the "Ancient Greek coins" and "Ancient Roman coins", these are exceptions because these were civilisation. The Roman, like you know, has an Empire from England until Iran and Irak, and similary the ancient Greek coins belongs cities very far from Greece (Turkey, Egypt, Thrace, etc.). Greece was never an Empire like the Romans, but his civilization interested a lot of other regions, and this we can see in the coinage. Cheers, DenghiùComm (talk) 08:55, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The Phoenicians were civilisation too; we tend to forget it, but for ages Carthage was way bigger than Athens. However, Phoenicia and Carthage coins are categorized as "Greek", even in ages before any greek rule over them. I think "Category:coins of the Phoenicians" may be better, even if their empire wasn't as broad as the Romans'. פעמי-עליון (talk) 10:04, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
