Is the Laffey still afloat? I served aboard her in 1974 when she was a reserve can in Alexandria, VA, and the most decorated ship in the US Navy. She was by far the finest ship on which I served. We had an outstanding captain who took us on cruises to Rockport, ME; Philadelphia; Nassau; and fish call in the Chesapeake Bay. The crew rewarded him by winning about every Excellency Award available. How fitting that she serves her final days in Charleston, as South Carolina was home to my ancestors (the Hannahs of York County and the Bowerses of Edgefield County.) Thanks, Charleston. Rodney Bowers, RM2.
