Dear Oursana, keep or delete the link "Category:Paintings in the Uffizi Gallery - Room A4 Giotto — Cimabue" in the "Category:Religious paintings in the Uffizi Gallery"?
In my opinion, it's better not to, because “Category:Paintings in the Uffizi Gallery - Room A4 Giotto — Cimabue” is part of the search criterion "by room", while “Religious paintings in the Uffizi Gallery” is part of the search criterion "by genre".
In my opinion, the categories that refer to a search criterion must remain part of that search criterion, without creating crossovers.
It is not forbidden to create crossovers between categories belonging to different branches, because it would not be an over-categorization. But it's confusing. Unless there are very few of them
1) In Room A4 today there are only religious paintings. But what if allegorical or mythological paintings were added?
2) With the intersection you created yesterday, today the category "Religious painting in the Uffizi Gallery" collects the sub-category “Room A4”. For consistency, then, in “Religious paintings” you should add a sub-category for each room that has at least one religious painting, that is, in the Uffizi Gallery, maybe seventy or eighty.
3) If you add one of the "by room" sub-categories in “Religious paintings”, why not link to that category also other sub-categories "by artist", "by century" and "by production area", whether these sub-categories contain paintings of a religious genre? Thus, in Religiuos paintings would appear also "Painting by Giotto in the Uffizi Gallery", "Paintings by Duccio in the Uffizi Gallery", "Paintings by Cimabue in the Uffizi Gallery" and all the other artists who also painted religious paintings, and then "13th-century paintings in the Uffizi Gallery" and "14th-century paintings in the Uffizi Gallery" and so on, since throughout the centuries religious subjects have been painted.
A cross between Room A4 (which is "by room") and Religious paintings (which is "by genre") does no harm, and keep it up, if you will. But if for the sake of consistency you think you're going to build all the crosses between all the subcategories of a search criterion with all the relevant subcategories of every other search criterion, you would construct thousands of crosses.
This problem is a consequence of the fact that Wikimedia Commons categories, understandably but unfortunately, must have a "tree" structure. It would be much more powerful to have the selection criteria of Relational Databases, but you would need to know how to create queries in SQL language and you can't expect it. But you can't try to remedy this gap by creating crossovers between sub-categories of different branches of search criteria Fabrizio Garrisi (talk) 09:17, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
