[edit]@Geagea: thank you for your message. I am not sure we have spoken before but I have seen your name many times - thank you for your huge contribution here. The files you have added over the years are of incalculable value to the community.
Regarding this category, I just don't understand it. The three categories Old maps of the Holy Land, Old maps of Israel and Old maps of Palestine have the same scope. I have been working for a few months on the wikipedia article w:Cartography of Palestine, and so I would like to tidy up these categories to support that article.
I'd be grateful for any advice you can give me here.

- Onceinawhile, It's not very hard to understand.
- "Old maps of the Holy Land" are old maps of the Holy Land and can be qualify for the same article.
- "Old maps of Israel" are old maps of the Israel and can be qualify for the same article.
- "Old maps of Palestine" are old maps of the Palestine (region) and can be qualify for the same article.
- They do not serving the same scope. And anyway, I do not have a problem your are adding the category "Old maps of Palestine" but the fact that you are removing the category "Old maps of the Holy Land" and others. -- Geagea (talk) 22:20, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @Geagea: could you help me understand with an example? File:1570 Palestinae Hondius.jpg is in all three categories that you mention above. Which one do you think it should be in?
- If your answer is all three, then could you show me an example of a file which should only be in one of the categories and not the other two?

- Onceinawhile, I see your point but in Commons we not limiting the categories. Israel is not instead Palestine or Palestine is not instead Israel. If somebody entering to the category of Holy Land, he should see all media that may related. -- Geagea (talk) 23:00, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Geagea: thanks. I do need to learn more about Commons policies. I want to know where the line should be drawn. For example, the Hondius file above refers to Terrae Promissionis. So we could justifiably also put it in a category called Old maps of the Promised Land (at Wikipedia, consensus is that Holy Land and Promised Land are different things). Some people like to use the term “Southern Levant”, so I could also create a category Old maps of the Southern Levant. We would then have five categories with exactly the same scope. - I guess it is in here: commons:Categories#Universality_principle? Seems a little vague. Onceinawhile (talk) 23:12, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
- You may do so if you wish. And as explained, they do not serve the same scope. "Universality principle" means that every country can have the same "Old maps of ...". -- Geagea (talk) 23:22, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
