Changing the name of the category ?

[edit]
  • In a first time, I have a slight doubt about discussing the name of a category name before contributing to fill this category or one of its neighbours. Applying this opinion to myself, I will start by uploading some photos of monuments in Busan. Pldx1 (talk) 17:34, 20 July 2013 (UTC). From talk page of [Category: Monuments in Busan][reply]
1. something erected in memory of a person, event, etc., as a building, pillar, or statue: the Washington Monument.
2. any building, megalith, etc., surviving from a past age, and regarded as of historical or archaeological importance.
A memorial is (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/monument):
1. something designed to preserve the memory of a person, event, etc., as a monument or a holiday.
2. a written statement of facts presented to a sovereign, a legislative body, etc., as the ground of, or expressed in the form of, a petition or remonstrance.
A category "dogs and cats" would be questionable, a category "cats and cats" is only weird. Pldx1 (talk) 06:12, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
All such categories on Commons follow the "Monuments and memorials" format. This was the result of a discussion some time ago. It is mainly due to the fact that there was no agreement among Commons users on the distinctions, if any, between monuments and memorials, and what overlap existed between them, and the scope of any such overlap. Merging the two categories was the only manner in which Commons could achieve any consistency. The categories were previously a mess. The English Wikipedia has also moved towards the "Monuments and memorials" format as well, for the same reason. A relatively small number of categories have not been moved yet. This is not a controversial move, but rather just clean-up. This category needs to be consistent with its parent categories, and the vast majority of this category tree. "Dogs and cats" is not comparable whatsoever. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 12:57, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
