[edit]In 16th century, the construction of new St. Peter's in Rome was deletary for several Gothic churches that were still in construction. The new style made them old fashioned, and the Pope's unscupulous ways of fund raising aroused general critics of the practises of the church, critics that lead into the reformation. So many Gothic churches remained incomplete up to the 19th century.
Then, driven by romanticism and nationalism people tried to restore middle ages, more splended than they had ever been. So lots of incomplete old churches were accomplished. Others were restored and "improved".
This fate of many originally medieval churches in several European countries ought to be much more present in historical consciousness. Therefore this category has been created. The churches enlisted up to now are only the top of an iceberg.--Ulamm 23:00, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
