Global usage is not up to date

[In reply to the edit summary on [1]] I have no link to "why" it is not up to date but I have seen examples where global usage said it was unused but where file was used. Until we are sure it is up to date I think we should either ask delinker to replace usage or check with the tab "Check usage". --MGA73 (talk) 20:27, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the quick reply. I updated the text accordingly. It'd be nice to know the reason of the delays, though – if you come across that answer, please post it here :) --Waldir talk 20:52, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Many files with generic names

Please see http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:AllPages&namespace=6&from=Pic-05.jpg for many file names beginning with "Pic" and a number. The ones with short names like file:Pic2.jpg are at risk of being overwritten by unrelated files. See also http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:AllPages&namespace=6&from=DSC since some digital cameras generate images with names beginning DSC Of course, the links to the images from other projects will need to be updated. - Eastmain (talk) 07:38, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Filemover backlog

I just asked this of someone newly granted the filemover mop, but I think the links are generally useful, so posting 'em here too. Can you please take a look at the Filemover backlog here and/or here? Seems it includes a bunch of media not properly categorized and hence not getting proper attention. --Elvey (talk) 21:25, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

Not all of the files listed at those links require renaming. I had a look at one or two, and they are simply files where the template {{Rename}} has been mentioned on the talk page. However, you are right that some of the files have been tagged for renaming, but the tag has been incorrectly been placed on the file talk page instead of the file page itself. Feel free to go through them, and if you find any files where {{Rename}} has been wrongly placed on the talk page, either transfer it to the image description page or go ahead and rename the files yourself. — Cheers, JackLee talk 04:55, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
As regards the files tagged with {{Rename}} at [2], it seems that the tagger has temporarily put them into a different category instead of leaving them in "Category:Media requiring renaming". This was probably done because the tagger has not decided whether the images should be renamed or not. — Cheers, JackLee talk 07:29, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

Change number of items determing whether the cat is backlogged?

Currently, the category is said to be backlogged if it has >10 items in it. However, because it will always have 3 subcats and the CommonsDelinker page in it, I suggest this is increased to 14 items, for, with the current setting, it is said to be backlogged even if there are 7 files in the cat. Regards, Pmlineditor (t · c · l) 10:44, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

Sure, no objection to that. — Cheers, JackLee talk 14:54, 12 February 2011 (UTC)
Seeing there are no objections, I have changed the page. Regards, Pmlineditor (t · c · l) 14:24, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
The CommonsDelinker page is no longer in this category (as far as I can see) so I decreased the backlog to 13, having only the three subcats as "offset". --MagnusA (talk) 16:52, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Floating asterisk

I'm getting a floating asterisk neath the "Subcategories" sub-heading on this page. Do others see it and know how to get rid of it? Cardiffchestnut (talk) 08:40, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Yup, I see it too, I think someone made a boo-boo with the template "<div lang="en" dir="ltr" class="mw-content-ltr"><h3>*</h3>" --Fred the Oyster (talk) 09:12, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
I think it's simply because the three subcategories "Category:Incomplete media renaming requests‎", "Category:Media renaming requests needing target‎" and "Category:Redundant media renaming requests‎" were given the sorting key "*". Not sure why this was done. — Cheers, JackLee talk 07:05, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
That appears to have been done to keep them all together, rather than in separate sections "I", "M", and "R".   — Jeff G. ツ 00:08, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
If so, that seems rather unnecessary since there are only three subcategories anyway. — Cheers, JackLee talk 05:31, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

This category has two parents. Both appear to show that this category contains more files than it does in fact contain. It seems the additions are reflected in the parent categories faster than the removals. Is this because the removals happen via the job queue? How may we see the length or lag of the job queue?   — Jeff G. ツ 20:21, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

How do i rename a file

I've made a typo with a file name and now I'm trying to figure out how to correct this. Renaming, deleting it's all so hard and frustrating. Wikipedia needs to improve if it wants to attract and keep new content editors!!

Hi Uberprutser, new users generally aren't granted renaming rights, it is a user group similar to Admin, it must me awarded based on trustworthiness of a user over a period of time. If you would like a user with these privileges to attend to your file simply add the {{Rename}} template to your file with the criteria for why a name change is warranted (in this case Criteria 1. uploader requested). Jdcollins13 - chat 20:28, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

TL;DR

please rename the remaining "Barins in a vat" to "Brains in a vat" → Category:Brain in a vat --84.134.43.40 12:06, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

Renaming STS Crew Portraits

Is it possible to rename all offical STS crew portraits to use the same style name (for example File:STS-xxx_offical_crew.xxx or File:STS-xxx_crew.xxx). I've been making a table of manned spacelaunches in finnish wikipedia and these files are a nightmare to use as almost every one of them has a different style name. --Msaynevirta (talk) 19:53, 29 November 2014 (UTC)

Just thinking about this request. The new name ist quite long. And the changes would rather fit to the description. But its the uploader's wish. -- DerFussi 06:00, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
