Scope of this category

[edit]
"Miles" that existed in 1848

@Enyavar: This category assumes that there are only two systems of units of measure in the world - metric and imperial. This is not the case - see for example the list on the right of different miles that existed in Europe in 1848. Imperial Units were defined by a British Act of Parliament in 1824 and therefore only apply to British territories or former British territories. For example, when Germany adopted the metric system in 1871, they did not discard the imperial system, but rather the variety of different units that existed in Germany prior to German Unification.

Will you please revisit all the items that you moved into this category and if they do not explicitly mention "Imperial Units", put them back where they were and, if necessary, recreate the category from which you removed them. Martinvl (talk) 22:36, 20 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Martin, no category was discarded. Most of these maps come from "International System of Units", with the rest coming from "Metric and imperial Units". If there is/was any category about other unit systems, I have not found it yet. This new category is a subcategory of both of them, and in my opinion, there should be a "Map of..." category for this kind of "map-type-that-shows-where-which-units-are-or-were-in-which-use". Please help me find a better name within the category tree. I chose this one because it derives directly from one of the parent-categories, and it felt more inclusive than just "Maps of the ISU". I can imagine for example: "Maps of metric systems" (metric not as in meter, but measurement), or "Maps of measurement systems" or "Maps of usage of measurement units"... --Enyavar (talk) 02:03, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Now that you mentioned it, I found the "Systems of units" category, where there were three more maps on imperial/fahrenheit usage. So "Maps of systems of units" would also be a good name, imo. Enyavar (talk) 02:15, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
