Mae Sa Orchid Farm

[edit]

It would seem that this category should be renamed to "Mae Sa Orchid Farm". - Takeaway (talk) 20:50, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

.... give a reason please. Thanks. Orchi (talk) 22:57, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I recognised where the photos were taken. All these photos are from one uploader and I think that he had forgotten where they were taken and therefore put them in a generic "Chiang Mai Orchids" category. I already began a new "Category:Mae Sa Orchid Farm". If all these images can be transferred to that category, then this category can be changed from a redirect to contain the "Category:Mae Sa Orchid Farm", and also be put in the newly created "Category:Orchids in Thailand". - Takeaway (talk) 01:06, 22 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I would actually create a new category called "Category:Orchids in Chiang Mai" and change "Category:Chiang Mai Orchids" to redirect to that one. The uploader of these images is a very prolific uploader but unfortunately not very precise in naming his categories. - Takeaway (talk) 01:09, 22 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It is the same with his uploads to Category:Elephant show in Chiang Mai. Those photos were taken a few hours later than the orchids photos here. They were taken at the Mae Sa Elephant Camp but he categorised them in a generic "Elephant show". I also need to get that category renamed. Both these venues are standard tourism destinations in Chiang Mai. I have already had to recategorise a huge amount of images that this uploader made during his recent holiday in Thailand. - Takeaway (talk) 01:28, 22 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think "Chiang Mai" is a plant nursery or an exhibition(?). You know the difference between "Chiang Mai Orchids" and "Orchids in Chiang Mai". But all the pictures in this category are handmade cultivars and not typical natural plants from Thailand. Therefore the category is more correct with "Category:Orchid cultivars in Thailand". Chiang Mai is a city and a province in Thailand. "Chiang Mai Orchids" is not the name of a nursery or exhibition. As far as I know (and I have also searched on google just in case), there is no orchid nursery called "Chiang Mai Orchids" at all, and as I already mentioned, I recognise the "Mae Sa Orchid Farm" from the images. The uploader, for reasons only known to him, very often uses capital letters (where he shouldn't) in the categories that he creates here on wikimedia. I have already had one of those categories, called "Category:Thai Vegetarian food", deleted and moved all media into "Category:Vegetarian food of Thailand. The "Mae Sa Orchid Farm" not only conserves local orchids but also showcases cultivars as you can see here on this slideshow. I am not an expert on orchids, so I can not easily make a distinction between wild and cultivated orchids. The categorisation as I now suggest does not exclude having the orchids also categorised into wild or cultivated species but someone else should do that, not me. - Takeaway (talk) 18:11, 22 June 2012 (UTC) I see from your profile that you speak German. If you feel more comfortable replying in German, you can do so. I can read German very well but I make too many mistakes when I write it so I hope you are okay with me replying in English. - Takeaway (talk) 18:16, 22 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Du magst die Kategorie nach Deinem Wissen und Deinen Wünschen einrichten. Ich werde dann eine logische und systematische Einordnung bei den über 5000 Orchideen-kategorien vornehmen. Grüße. Orchi (talk) 12:58, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I wish you luck and perseverance with recategorising those many orchid varieties! I guess you'll be creating new categories called "Orchidaceae from Thailand" or "Orchidaceae indigenous to Thailand" in addition to the existing category "Category:Orchids in Thailand". Keeping the last category (or something similar to it) would be advisable because most people who are not experts on orchids, but who, for instance, visit Thailand on a holiday and upload photos of orchids they have seen, can upload their photos in to such a category. It prevents orchids which are not from Thailand to be uploaded in to a category for indigenous orchids. Regards, - Takeaway (talk) 16:27, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
