Funny that we call the system MacPherson strut. When I started my time just under 30 years ago it was called vertical inline suspension. MacPherson strut was the name of the person that invented the system that was then manufactured for Ford Motor Co. for the Prefect and Anglia. It then followed on into the Cortina and Escort.

This system used a single lower arm that then was surpported by the control rod, this control rod also was used as the caster control arm.

The adaptation of this systems did not make it a MacPherson strut system, but a version of the vertical inline suspension.
