Renaming

[edit]

Oppose with every fibre in my body: (a) It's a lot of work to satisfy a dubious rule since it shows no respect for the general consensus on Commons that we respect local names (b) It would conflict with the text further down in the same policy "However, there are exceptions such as some proper names, biological taxa and names for which the non-English name is most commonly used in the English language" and (c) lochs and lakes in Scotland are not necessarily the same thing by any means. Lochs are natural and lakes usually man-made. Preserving this difference is important. Rodhullandemu (talk) 16:42, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Naturally, categories of individual lochs or lakes should keep their established names. As in Scotland, so for whichever other country (using local languages). This discussion is not about proper names but is about systematic categories grouping subjects by type and by location. Such categories should be in English and should comply with the principle of universality.
If there is any distinction between "lochs" and "lakes" in Scottland, such a distinction should be described and used for whole category trees, and some globally understandable and unambiguous terms should be chosen. If we want to distinguish natural lakes from man-made lakes, we should seek for terms which can express such a difference not only in Scottland but also in whichever English-speaking as well as non-English-speaking country. In any case, the word "Lakes" should have identical meaning for all levels and all branches of the category tree. --ŠJů (talk) 22:27, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
