Mission Statement

[edit]

Hello, I am hoping to develop this page in order to increase the documentation of ecoregions of the world. The various regions on this page are based on One Earth's names and categories. One Earth is a nonprofit organization and the successor to the WWF ecoregion concept; as for me, I am not affiliated with them.

It is my hope that by conducting a search of and categorizing all freely licensed images, we will have a better understanding of the ecoregions that are well documented as well as those which may require more insight. This project will take up much time and I do not foresee this project being finished in the near future. However, I intend to continue working in order to create the framework of categories here on Wikimedia Commons and to add many images along the way. Help is always appreciated and I encourage anyone to feel free to contribute.

As one would expect, ecoregion boundaries are not discrete and certain places may fall into a gray area in between one or more regions. In such cases, I would ask the contributor to consider which ecoregion(s) would best represent that place. In one case, I categorized "El Cielo Biosphere Reserve" in the state of Veracruz, MX as both "Veracruz Moist Forests" and "Sierra Madre Oriental Pine-Oak Forests" because its boundaries extended into and represented both regions. It also has been my experience that some places may be just outside of the boundaries on One Earth. For example, when I added images from "Área Natural Protegida Estero El Soldado" in the state of Sonora, MX, it was a good example of the "Northern Mesoamerican Pacific Mangroves Ecoregion" but outside of its One Earth boundary. In that case, I still chose to categorize it as the mangrove ecoregion rather than as "Sonoran Desert Ecoregion" which is what it would have otherwise fallen into. In short, I would ask that anyone who would wish to contribute would be intentional with their categorization.

Overall, I hope that this page will help individuals to gain insight into what each ecoregion contains. Ideally, it would be nice for someone who has never visited the ecoregion to still have a good idea of what it would be like based on the images.
