Why?

[edit]

Can someone explain to me why this category is needed? @DanielPenfield: There are two nice categories Male / female journalists from the United States, who contain names of journalists. They are refined categories: I can click on a letter and find the journalist I am looking for. Now there is an extra category (by name, mind you, not by colour of hair) that forces me to look in two categories. Why? Vysotsky (talk) 16:18, 9 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to prohibit "by name" categories, make a detailed proposal at COM:CD and state A) that you want every subcategory of Category:People categories by name deleted and B) the Commons:Category scheme People#Category descriptions purged of its "by name" recommendation as well. -- DanielPenfield (talk) 16:40, 9 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your answer. I think it is no coincidence that you don't try to give a logical explanation, or make clear why these categories are supposed to be an improvement in any way. But OK -you're right: I should draw up that proposal, because I think it should be a real improvement to have all People categories by name deleted. But I hate to fight a losing battle, and I guess the "by name" craze has already gone too far. Vysotsky (talk) 21:57, 9 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
