Beware of accidental impostors

There might not be any actual images of Ioan Budai-Deleanu (1760-1820) out there. In their absence, people all around the web have shared and re-shared images of at least two other people as Ioan Budai-Deleanu, without checking. If you do an image search on any random old portrait, too often you'll find it mapped to two or more unrelated names. If you search on a random lesser-known historical name, too often you'll find it mapped to images of unrelated people. I see carelessness "out there" that borders on vandalism.

Images of two other people got uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, incorrectly file-named and described as Ioan Budai-Deleanu. (They have since been deleted as duplicate or renamed and recategorized correctly.) When images get stored on Wikimedia with incorrect names and descriptions, it reinforces the existing web-wide mistakes and accelerates their propagation.

I hope we can avoid repeat embarrassment if people check images against this list of people who are not Ioan Budai-Deleanu before uploading:

• Inocențiu Micu-Klein (1692-1768), Romanian intellectual and Bishop, is not Ioan Budai-Deleanu.
• Georg Cantor (1845-1918), German mathematician, is not Ioan Budai-Deleanu.
