Hills and mountains in heraldry don't seem to be different enough to create two categories. Zigeuner 14:51, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree, they may look the same visually but are different concepts. In Malta and Gozo there are no Mountains, the COA of Rabat Image:Rabat_Gozo_coa.svg represents the three hills on which the town is built. And there are an alps and volcanoes sub-categories to the Mountains in Heraldry Category. I am reverting for now, If all these categories are to be merged I guess a more appropriate name is to be found. --Inkwina 15:01, 17 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! In heraldry, each charge has a specific name. This name may be different than the "common" name (for example, in French heraldry, the fish "barbel" is termed by a word (bar) that means "seabass"). So, even though there are no mountains in Malta, the charge on coat of arms can be termed "mount".
Nevertheless, the charge "hill" does exist. It is more scarce than "mount" (and than "hillock"). A hill may be another name for "mount", or may term a charge less high than a "mount". As the difference is not clear, I think it is better to merge all the categories "mount", "hill" and "hillock".
Examples:
"mount of three hillocks" —— a "mount of six hillocks"
"hillocks" alone
It should be necessary to know the blazon of Image:Rabat_Gozo_coa.svg. Without it, I think the charge on this coat of arms looks more like a "mount of three hillocks" than like "three hills".
To conclude, I think (i) due to the confusion between hills and mounts, it is better to merge it in one category ("mount" being an appopriate name, as it is the more often used name), (ii) Image:Rabat_Gozo_coa.svg should probably be blazoned "a mount of three hillocks".
P.S. "Alp" is not an heraldic charge, and the coat of arms in this category do not even show "mounts". This category should be deleted. "Volcanoes" may be used for modern coat of arms, which show realist landscapes.

Just a couple of points. I am not very knowledgeable about heraldry, my interest was in creating SVGs for scalability. Your original point was based on there not being enough differences. Your argument now makes a lot of sense. The COAs of Malta's local councils where "created" in 1995, so they are "modern" (chronologically speaking). I have not found the time to obtain the official blazons of them yet. I was following the format of the categories that where there, with many subdivisions. Re-subcategorizing the Heraldry sub-categories on the principles of heraldry obviously makes more sense. --Inkwina 09:19, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
