There are some wild guesses about the construction date around; a date as early as 1876 is sometimes mentioned, and pictures are designated as dating from 1889. The simple truth is: Elwood Haynes completed his first car, the Pioneer, in July, 1894. The pictures showing otherwise are early promotion or kind of fake news by Elwood Haynes himself and his company.

As the first motor car built in the USA, this vehicle is not a contender. At least the Nadig, the Lambert (Buckeye), the Duryea and the King were earlier. The Selden road engine, claimed to have been invented in 1877, was not built before 1902, with the original vehicle finished in 1905.--Chief tin cloud (talk) 13:43, 25 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
