Proposed merge with Category: Direction road signs
[edit]I agree with the merge proposal to Category:Direction road signs. Powers 13:15, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
- I disagree with the proposal to rename Category:Guide signs and mege with Category:Direction road signs. Guide signs are a major classification of road signs in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). The MUTCD is the primary standard for road sign design and placement in the United States. A Canadian version of the MUTCD is used in Canada.
- WikiProject US Roads and related WikiProjects are moving free images to the Commons. They will need this category "AS IS". There are a considerable number of images that will be added to this category over time. Guide signs, as classified in the MUTCD, should be added to this category. The category should remain.
- However, this category contains many images that should be moved to Category:Direction road signs. These images are generally photos of directional road signs and guide sign assemblies. Such photos are better placed in Category:Direction road signs.

- None of these images is from the United States, so I'm not sure how the MUTCD applies. Powers (talk) 18:41, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
The MUTCD is useful for three reasons:
(1) 4 photos are from Canada (2 from Quebec, 1 from Ontario, & 1 from Saskatchewan). Canadian jurisdictions use a Canadian version of the MUTCD.
(2) other countries use national or regional (e.g. European Union) standards based on comparable principles,
(3) this category is a subcategory of Category:Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. That category's description clearly references the US MUTCD. Sehome Bay (talk) 11:34, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
Why should these categories be merged? When LimoWreck proposed merge on May 2, he provided no reasons or explanation. When LtPowers agreed on June 2, he provided no explanation. This discussion would be more productive if someone supporting the merge proposal would provide reasons. Sehome Bay (talk) 23:14, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry, when you put a space in front of my original statement, the formatting became such that my eyes floated over it, and I forgot I'd made a recommendation at all (it was a few months ago, as you point out). At the time, the proposal seemed non-controversial and I saw no reason not to do it. I'm still not sure "guide signs" is a clear description of the category's intended contents, but I fully agree that some of the images currently here belong in Category:Direction road signs. Whether that's done by merge or not is irrelevant, but it should be done. If the category after those moves is useful then by all means, use it. Powers (talk) 13:53, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
Merging seems not optimal, so I made it a subcategory in category:Direction road signs. --Foroa (talk) 16:48, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
