Former mining?

[edit]

Eh? During planning and construction it was called Washington Heights Mine Tunnel, but this was "mine" in the sense of a deep and long tunnel, not in the sense of digging up valuable rocks. Thus the tunnel is still being used for its original purpose, unless someone has better information than I do. Jim.henderson (talk) 13:12, 25 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I'm kind of stumped on that myself. But I did read that somewhere. ----DanTD (talk) 13:47, 25 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I can only guess that others have put such an error into print. I have deleted. It can await good evidence. Jim.henderson (talk) 22:23, 26 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm the only person who worked on this category, as well as the person who created it. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. I'll gladly accept the deletion, but I want to know where the idea that it was an actual mining tunnel came from. ----DanTD (talk) 00:40, 27 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, knowledge would be better than speculation. Jim.henderson (talk) 13:07, 28 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'll tell you what I do know; There was a lot of mining going on in Upper Manhattan back in the late-19th century for dolomite and marble. So it's not outside of the realm of possibility. ----DanTD (talk) 14:26, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Carbonate rocks underneath igneous rocks? Geologically unusual but not un-heard-of. Spending the money to tunnel deep for them, in competition against open quarrying? That one I haven't head of, but would I know? Anyway far as we can tell the tunnel was made for the subway, connecting the portal in Harlem to several stations and emerging from another portal under Ft George. Odd that none of us snapped any photos of the southern portal even though I have biked there at least half a dozen times in the past ten years and took a 1 train through there a week and a half ago.
