Circular categorization
[edit]There's an odd loop here... any advice on whether it'd be appropriate to break one of these links?

- It certainly would, categories should not link above and below like this. I have kept Food under Cooking, but removed Cooking from the Food category. 90.196.241.17 22:35, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
- That was me right above. :-) Leevclarke (talk) 22:36, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
Overcategorization
[edit]The current situation is that the category is doubly overcategorized:
- Food and drink
- Cuisine
- Cooking
- Food
- Food
- Cooking
- Food
- Cuisine
I'm going to implement the following structure instead:
- Food and drink
- Cuisine
- Food
- Food preparation
- Cooking
- Food preparation
Here is my reasoning:
Food is a subset of food and drink (so Food should be somewhere below Food and drink; probably directly below it). Food preparation is something done to food. Cooking is a method of food preparation. Not all food is cooked, though. Hence: cooking goes below food preparation, which goes below food.
Cuisine is a set of traditions and practices related to food and drink, associated with a given culture. In a sense, it deals with both the preparation and the result. It's a bit hard to fit into a structure, but I think it's broad enough that it merits a place directly below Food and drink. The focus here is cultural.

Category:Food and drink and Category:Cuisine were also over-categorized under Category:Culture. As I mentioned above, Cuisine is the category that deals with the cultural aspects of food and drink. Not all food-and-drink-related topics are cultural. Category:Animal food is only cultural by the most inclusive of definitions.
However, Culture was the only parent category of Food and drink. In order not to orphan it, I placed it in Category:Nutrition, which was previously a subcategory of Food and drink. Food and drink is a type of nutrition, not the other way around. Other types include vitamin supplements and IV fluids. —LX (talk, contribs) 15:17, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
