Images have typically a subject and a creator. It is quite likely that the creator is a human. It is only possible that the subject is a human. In Wikipedia the authorship is of noteworthy important as the usage rights are derived from that via the various world wide intellectual property rights. In a photograph where the author is know since the beginning and the subject is know decades later I felt like its correct to attribute the author via a category. Would you be so kind and drop me a clear brief note what i might have missed. Digging (vicious circles?) around in other maybe big wiki pages that are probably not written with the exactly matching idea is something i want to avoid. @Alexander.stohr: : I totally agree that the authorship is a very important thing and therefore it should be documented. In general you are correct to attribute authorship by adding categories. In this case I reverted because all files listed in this category here were allready marked as photographs by Dorothea Lange with other added categories. I assume good-faith in your revisions. In my understanding you appear to have – like many other users here – a lack of knowledge on how the categorization systems works on Commons. Presumably you have an understanding of other image databases on the web like flickr, panoramio or whatever. The point is: Commons is different. Categories are not used as "tags" here, the category system is used here with the intention to form a hierarchic structure, see Commons:Categories.

Nachdem ich gesehen habe, dass du offenbar deutsch verstehst mache ich auch auf deutsch weiter: Basierend auf dem Verständnis von Commons eine logische, hierarchische Kategorienstruktur abzubilden, steht die Kategorie "Florence Owens Thompson" für eine Person. Einzelne Dateien werden gemäß der Definition den Kategorien zugeordnet. Die Kategorie(namen) definieren also den (möglichen) Inhalt einer Kategorie und nicht umgekehrt. Streng genommen wäre es eigentlich unzulässig, der Kategorie einer lebenden Person eine Kategorie "Photographs by..." zuzuordnen, weil die Kategorie durch sich selbst, idealerweise durch ihren Namen eindeutig definiert ist und nun einmal Person ≠ Fotografie ist. Selbst wenn die Kategorie ausschließlich Bilder eines bestimmten Fotografen enthält, wäre der formal korrekte Weg dennoch diese entweder einzeln dem Fotografen zuzuordnen (durch hinzufügen von "Category:Photographs by ..." zu jedem einzelnen Bild) oder durch erstellen einer eigenen Kategorie, die alle diese Bilder eines bestimmten Fotografen von einer bestimmten Person zusammenfasst. In diesem Fall hast du mit Category:Migrant Mother sequence by Dorothea Lange eine solche Kategorie praktisch erstellt (sofern Florence Owens Thompson die einzige "Migrant mother" in dieser Fotosequenz ist). Wäre es keine berühmte Fotosequenz wäre ein empfohlener Name stattdessen z.B. Category:Florence Owens Thompson photographed by Dorothea Lange.

Manchmal geht man auf Commons trotzdem her und fügt einer Orts-, Objekt- oder Personenkategorie eine Kategorie für den Fotografen hinzu, sei es aus Faulheit oder weil sonst die Struktur zu aufgebläht werden würde. Bei Category:Lucin Cutoff einer Bahnlinie stimmt z.B. die zugewiesene Kategorie Category:Photographs by Jack Boucher nicht mehr bzw. nur mehr für einen Teil der darin enthaltenen Dateien zu. Das ist eine Gratwanderung. Auch im Hinblick auf eine möglichst maschinenlesbare Kategoriestruktur sollte man so etwas eigentlich vermeiden.

Gemäß der Commons Logik wäre die vernünftige Hierarchie hier so: Kategorie:Florence Owens Thompson übergeordnet, darin gelistet "Migrant Mother sequence by Dorothea Lange", also die Fotoserie von ihr und dieser Kategorie untergeordnet dann jene Kategorie für das einzelne Foto.

Zur Kategorie Category:Photographs by photographer, die du hier hinzugefügt hast. Diese soll per Definition nur Kategorien des Schemas "Photographs by Name des Fotografen" enthalten. Dies in erster Linie wegen der Übersichtlichkeit.

Zur hierarchischen Struktur ist noch anzumerken, dass jede einzelne Mediendatei idealerweise nur an einer Stelle im Kategorienbaum gelistet sein sollte. Was darüber hinaus geht nennt man Überkategoriesierung, siehe dazu COM:Overcat. Dazu gehört auch, dass man den einzelnen Dateien nicht auch noch die Kategorie für den Fotografen zuweist, wenn man diese bereits der Kategorie hinzugefügt hat, die diese Dateien enthält. --Zaccarias (talk) 17:22, 26 August 2017 (UTC)
