Name convention

[edit]

All the names in this category should be renamed to "Canton of XXXXX" otherwise one gets "Geneva" ({{Genève}}) instead of expected "Geneva" ({{Geneva}}). --Jarekt (talk) 15:07, 21 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. But "Canton of Geneva", can also be used in {{City}}. It may be a good idea to define a convention about whether or not to use flag in such templates that tend to be heavily used in {{Creator}}. --Zolo (talk) 13:09, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think templates like "Canton of Geneva" should be standard multilingual templates without a flag. Would it make sense to rename current templates to "Template:current name (with flag)" and have a bot run to fix current usage ? Personnally I I would prefer to drop to flag alotogether. For instance in File:2010-04-11 13 35 55 HB-IOY Switzerland Hell.jpg, the Zurich canton flag is made very conspicuous while it is really not of prime relevance. Not mentionning that few non-Swiss know much about the flags of Swiss cantons. --Zolo (talk) 14:57, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
While I think the convention "Canton of XXX" is a good idea, I would prefer to leave the flags in. They do not disturb IMO and they also lead people to the canton, they probably do not know. Otherwise the argument that the flag in the country template should also be removed, as many people do not know the country flags, beside some popular ones. -- Simisa (talk) 15:53, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Actually templates like {{Switzerland}} or {{Germany}} do not use flag and are more widely used than their counterparts with flags: 11388 {{Switzerland}} vs 2678 {{CHE}} - 16876 {{France}} vs 25 {{FRA}} Since most templates named after a city or region do not use flags, it would be more consistent to do the same here. A bot can probably change current files so that they keep the flag if that is considered useful.--Zolo (talk) 16:52, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
